  1. new low here ... Son and mother charged with faking death to obtain CPF, insurance claims SINGAPORE: A man and his mother were charged on Friday (Apr 12) with faking her death to obtain Central Provident Fund (CPF) and insurance claims, the police said. Abraham Rock, 35, and his mother Talat Farman, 53, are accused of making more than S$3.7 million in false claims. Insurance firm AXA lodged a police report on Nov 13, 2018, after it found several irregularities in the documents relating to Farman’s purported death in Pakistan. By then, S$49,000 had already been paid out from the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) under the Dependants' Protection Scheme while S$80,331.23 was paid out from her CPF account. Officers from the Commercial Affairs Department arrested Rock on Nov 21, 2018. Farman was also subsequently arrested. Rock faces a total of 11 charges, including charges of engaging in a conspiracy to commit cheating, giving false information, making a false statutory declaration and providing false evidence. His mother faces five charges of engaging in a conspiracy to cheat. If found guilty of cheating, the pair faces up to 10 years in jail and a fine for each charge. For making a false statutory declaration or providing false evidence, they face up to seven years in jail and a fine for each charge. If found guilty of giving false information, they face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to S$5,000 for each charge. Both are out on bail of S$15,000 each and will return to court on May 10. The police said that they worked closely with the insurers during the investigation. “In our continuous effort to combat fraud, it is vital for all insurers to be proactive in detecting and reporting suspicious cases to the authorities,” the police said.

  4. Or MRT in denial? Passenger was not at Lakeside MRT station: SMRT Train operator SMRT has refuted the presence of a passenger who had taken a picture of one of its train's carriage doors left open while it was travelling, saying that she was never there in the first place. Ms Samantha Francis, 23, a content producer with citizen journalism website Stomp, had uploaded a photo on Wednesday morning showing one of the train doors wide open. She claimed that the train was travelling despite the open door and only closed when it reached the next stop at Chinese Garden. Ms Francis had boarded the train at 10.15pm on Tuesday night. She told The Straits Times that after the train stopped at the station, the doors on the opposite side to the platform opened first. She then took a picture through the closed doors in front of her. When the doors in front of her opened, she entered the train and took another picture of the opposite doors, one of which remained open until the train stopped at the next stop at Chinese Garden. Ms Francis said a Chinese man in T-shirt and bermudas and an Indian man were in the same carriage as her. Yesterday, she met with SMRT staff at Lakeside MRT to assist in their investigations. She showed them where she was standing when she took the photo and described what she was wearing that night to help SMRT identify her in CCTV footage. When asked by SMRT staff if her current ez-link card was the one used that night, Ms Francis answered yes. However, SMRT told The Straits Times in a statement on Thursday that Ms Francis was not present at Lakeside MRT. "We thank (Ms Francis) for coming forward today to assist us with our investigations. We are checking a few more things, as from our records (CCTV footage and ez-link card trip details), she was not at Lakeside MRT station on 19 June," said the statement. It added that its trains will not be able to move if the doors are not closed properly and that the railings in her picture do not match those at Lakeside MRT. "We wish to reassure commuters that the MRT system is built with many fail-safe features to ensure passenger safety", said the company. Stomp editor Azhar Kasman confirmed yesterday that the photos of the incident were submitted by a Stomp content producer. "We have verified the details with her and she stands by her account of the incident," said Mr Kasman, in response to claims that Ms Francis was never at the station. [email protected]
  5. From http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...0402-57669.html : [ A man has been arrested for trying to get compensation from at least two drivers after falsely claiming that they had knocked him down. Police said on Wednesday a woman in her 40s was driving her car onto Lorong 27 Geylang from Sims Avenue on Tuesday at about 11 pm when she heard a loud bang at the rear of her vehicle. She stopped to check. A man sitting by the road claimed that she had knocked into him. The driver wanted to send him to hospital for treatment, but he refused. Instead, he demanded $200 compensation. Police were called. The man was arrested on the spot . . . . . ] Won't be surprised if he's a Foreign Trash import from China. Happened to my sis once. Was driving out from her office compound when one Chinaman riding a bike on the walkway appeared and fell down in front of her car. Said my sis had bumped his bike, asked for medical expenses. My sis called her male colleagues and the bugger scooted off when they appeared.
