  4. say you park in front of and blocking 3 cars as the car park is full and you are going to sit down for a lunch in the kopitiam next to the car, and halfway through your makan you hear someone horning (quite gently) a few times say every 2 mins as if the driver is blocked when he wants to drive his parked car out of the carpark? btw, when he first sounds his horn, there are already few other vacant lots for you to shift your car into. the cars you are blocking have their boots facing you and the kopitaim (ie hard to see the drivers, unless you move from your table and peep lower) do you: 1. sit and do nothing, continue to eat / drink? or 2. look around for the driver/horner but, still sitting down, to check if the 'horner's' car is the one blocked by your car? or 3. stand up and move closer to the peep into the 3 cars to see if one of them wants to drive off? i met one guy (having his lunch next to my table today) who parked his car as above but did nothing except glanced around sitting there when the horns kept repeating at least 5 times.... finally he took a slow walk to check and saw the driver and LL drove off, but came back to the kopitiam talked/complained loudly to everyone there why the other driver didnt stand up to show him!!!

  6. Man dies after homemade natural gas cylinder explodes Tank for fuel was placed under a seat in van and had originally been a cooking gas cylinder FATAL BLAST: The scene after the explosion at thepetrol station THE two brothers liked tinkering with gadgets and modifying them But last Friday, their hobby led to the death of one of them when a cooking gas cylinder they converted to store natural gas for their van exploded. Younger brother Mohd Hilmi Ishak, 25, was killed in the blast that occurred at 7.50pm at a petrol station in Batu Berendam, Malacca, reported Malaysian newspapers. The van, with Mr Hilmi, brother Mohd Rosli, 30, and a friend, Mr Razali Md Zin, 31, had pulled into the petrol station. They were filling up the cylinder, which Metro Ahad said was understood to have been under one of the front seats, when the blast occurred. It blew out the front portion of the van and two doors and shattered Mr Hilmi's left leg. His abdomen was ripped open. He was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead at 1.30am. The other two men had light injuries. The brothers run a family business dealing in second-hand electrical appliances. Mr Razali said they had been using the van for a month and had often travelled to Singapore and Johor in it. Spark caused blast The explosion is believed to have been caused by a spark from the engine, which was running while they were refuelling, New Straits Times reported. At the hospital, Mr Hilmi's father-in-law, Mr Zahmin Ibrahim, 50, told The Star that the victim and his daughter, Madam Nur Syahirah, 23, married about four months ago. He said his daughter, who is two months' pregnant, was devastated. 'We refused to allow her to come to the hospital as the loss would be too much for her to bear, as she is now pregnant,' he said. Road Transport Department director-general Solah Mat Hassan advised the public to use authorised workshops to install natural gas tanks. He said: 'Sometimes, people are taken in by the cheap conversions offered by irresponsible workshops. 'Some people also ignore the basic safety rules at petrol stations, like switching off the engine and their handphones.' Cooking cylinders too thin An authorised installer in Johor, known only as Mr Lai, told Nanyang Siang Pau that cooking gas cylinders are not suitable for natural gas because they are usually not as thick as natural gas cylinders. Datuk Solah said two similar incidents had been reported in Kuala Lumpur . Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam, who visited the survivors, urged the authorities to clamp down on those who illegally modify their vehicles. Sin Chew Daily reported that the brothers once turned second-hand washing machines into coin-operated ones so that the machines could be used at public places. Several schools in Malacca have benefited from the innovation.

  9. SPC to provide compressed natural gas station Posted: 04 August 2007 0035 hrs Photos 1 of 1 Dr Amy Khor SINGAPORE: Singapore Petroleum Company (SPC) is likely to be the first petrol company here to provide compressed natural gas (CNG). Authorities are also working with other petrol companies to encourage them to supply CNG. This was revealed by Senior Parliamentary Secretary Amy Khor from the Environment and Water Resources Ministry at the launch of the Energy Smart Hotel Label Scheme by the National Environment Agency (NEA) on Friday. The country's first-ever CNG refuelling station that is accessible to the public is expected to start running by next January. The new CNG station will be located at Mandai Road, just off the Woodlands Road junction. Smart Automobile, which runs Singapore's first and largest fleet of CNG taxis, will build and operate the station. NEA has been checking out hotel premises to single out those which have gone the extra green mile and four of them have been chosen as the first recipients of the new energy label scheme. These four hotels are namely, The Regent, Shangri-la, Intercontinental and Changi Village. Recycling used cooking oil into diesel fuel is one of the initiatives that has propelled The Regent to the top of the list of eco-friendly hotels. Lee Baharrudin, Director of Engineering at The Regent Singapore, said: "We are reducing a lot of waste that is being thrown out by recycling metal, cardboard and even light bulb covers." In its rooms, lights are turned off and curtains drawn to minimise energy consumption. Bottles and newspapers are also collected for recycling. But the hotel's most eco-friendly feature is found in the car park as the boiler system uses energy from air conditioners to heat up the hotel's water tanks, thereby generating zero carbon emissions. Dr Khor said: "Energy efficiency really is a low-hanging fruit in our scheme to promote energy conservation and we think there will be tremendous potential and dividends that we can reap by exploiting this to the max, to encourage greater awareness as well as adoption of energy-efficient measures." The NEA plans to expand its energy label program to include shopping centres and schools
