  2. The silver lining is the rest of the people on the plane survived... Can't imagine what went through their mind from the time it happened, until the time the plane managed to land... http://www.straitstimes.com/world/united-states/southwest-plane-makes-emergency-landing-in-philly-damage-to-exterior Southwest Airlines plane's engine explodes in mid-air; woman passenger killed after nearly sucked out of window PHILADELPHIA (REUTERS) - An engine on a Dallas-bound Southwest Airlines flight with 149 people aboard apparently exploded on Tuesday (April 17), forcing an emergency landing in Philadelphia as one passenger was killed after she was nearly sucked out a window of the plane, the airline and federal officials said. The fatality on the flight from New York was the first in a US commercial aviation accident since 2009, according to National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) statistics. After an engine on the plane's left side blew, it threw off shrapnel, shattering a window and causing cabin depressurisation that nearly pulled out a female passenger, according to witness accounts and local news media reports.

    China

This is older new from Sept but I think it'll be of interest to Vulcann Shocker! In China's rush to be a 21st century military power, it might be possible some engineering's been a little... rushed. That seems to be the case for this Chinese "Pterodactyl" UAV
  6. IT WAS a scene right out of an action movie - the car, after swerving left and right, flipped over three or four times before hitting the centre divider and bursting into flames. Miss Zac M Noh, 55, who works in a construction company as part of its safety personnel, said she had just passed the Bedok North Avenue 3 exit and was trying to move from the extreme right lane on the expressway to the middle lane. She was driving to her sister's home at the time. She said that while changing lanes, she swerved sharply to the right to avoid hitting a car in the middle lane. "I tried to turn to the right where there were no cars, but it was as though the carhad amindof its own. "When I turned the steering wheel towards the right, the car turned left instead." Frantic, she tried braking, but the brakes were unresponsive. "Can you imagine it? There were cars everywhere. I didn't know where I was going or whether I was going to hit anyone," she told The New Paper as she rested on a grass patchon the road shoulder. http://motoring.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/...524-280453.html ---------------------- Hmm... interesting story. I suspect road hogging and not checking blindspot when changing lanes has something to do with her accident.
  7. wtf http://www.theage.com.au/world/plane-explo...1104-17f40.html A plane has exploded over Batam, Indonesia, en route to Singapore, according to Indonesian media reports and there are fears it may have been a Qantas jet. The reports of the explosion, which occurred at 9.15am local time (1.15pm Australian time), are sketchy and the type of plane unconfirmed. But local media are speculating that some of the debris was from a Qantas jet. Advertisement: Story continues below Kompas reported on its website that it "was suspected that a Qantas plane exploded in the air near Batam". "The big explosion happened near Hang Nadim airport," the report continued, adding the plane was heading to Singapore. It provided no sourcing for the report. An eyewitness, Hana, told Metro TV, that she saw a plane that was on fire overhead before hearing a loud explosion. Parts of the plane have reportedly landed in heavily populated areas in Batam and near the airport, including near a shopping centre. Batam, in the Riau Islands, is just south of Singapore. Comment was being sought from local transport authorities and Qantas. More to come
  8. Man dies after homemade natural gas cylinder explodes Tank for fuel was placed under a seat in van and had originally been a cooking gas cylinder FATAL BLAST: The scene after the explosion at thepetrol station THE two brothers liked tinkering with gadgets and modifying them But last Friday, their hobby led to the death of one of them when a cooking gas cylinder they converted to store natural gas for their van exploded. Younger brother Mohd Hilmi Ishak, 25, was killed in the blast that occurred at 7.50pm at a petrol station in Batu Berendam, Malacca, reported Malaysian newspapers. The van, with Mr Hilmi, brother Mohd Rosli, 30, and a friend, Mr Razali Md Zin, 31, had pulled into the petrol station. They were filling up the cylinder, which Metro Ahad said was understood to have been under one of the front seats, when the blast occurred. It blew out the front portion of the van and two doors and shattered Mr Hilmi's left leg. His abdomen was ripped open. He was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead at 1.30am. The other two men had light injuries. The brothers run a family business dealing in second-hand electrical appliances. Mr Razali said they had been using the van for a month and had often travelled to Singapore and Johor in it. Spark caused blast The explosion is believed to have been caused by a spark from the engine, which was running while they were refuelling, New Straits Times reported. At the hospital, Mr Hilmi's father-in-law, Mr Zahmin Ibrahim, 50, told The Star that the victim and his daughter, Madam Nur Syahirah, 23, married about four months ago. He said his daughter, who is two months' pregnant, was devastated. 'We refused to allow her to come to the hospital as the loss would be too much for her to bear, as she is now pregnant,' he said. Road Transport Department director-general Solah Mat Hassan advised the public to use authorised workshops to install natural gas tanks. He said: 'Sometimes, people are taken in by the cheap conversions offered by irresponsible workshops. 'Some people also ignore the basic safety rules at petrol stations, like switching off the engine and their handphones.' Cooking cylinders too thin An authorised installer in Johor, known only as Mr Lai, told Nanyang Siang Pau that cooking gas cylinders are not suitable for natural gas because they are usually not as thick as natural gas cylinders. Datuk Solah said two similar incidents had been reported in Kuala Lumpur . Malacca Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam, who visited the survivors, urged the authorities to clamp down on those who illegally modify their vehicles. Sin Chew Daily reported that the brothers once turned second-hand washing machines into coin-operated ones so that the machines could be used at public places. Several schools in Malacca have benefited from the innovation.
