i seem to recall that the driving centers teach that when changing lanes, we are suppose to check for safe distance clearance of the vehicle behind, then signal then slowly filter into the desired lane.....

 

Somehow i do not recall having been taught that we signal & expect vehicle behind should give way........

no offence ah, but i feel that if you knew the roads of that area so well (100m to turn right) then you should have just kept to the correct turning lane, instead of trying to cut in, after turning ...

 

unless you are very certain that your car can outsprint the cars that are on your left and get way ahead of the crowd.

 

If you had kept to the right lane, this entire incident wont happen. Giving way is a form of courtesy that you should not take for granted.

 

If he had knock into your car (from the side), the damages might be absorbed by both parties. It might even be considered as your fault because changing lanes, you are supposed to ensure safety distance and clear of cars.

did i say i drive a tucson?? ( no offense to tucson owners ) some bros who know me here knows wat car i drive. it was my mistake to target at conti cars in the 1st post as i was still fuming at tat time. so sorry to all conti or alfa owners. by the way, i can afford a conti car anytime, so thks for suggesting if i have inferiority complex.

after going thru the pages, here's my conclusion.

Alfa's pov- upset SUV filter despite narrow gap.

SUV- upset Alfa gestured & horned at him.

This is sometimes called a racing incident in F1. Guess you can call it a driving incident in this context.

 

The reality of driving here is you can't expect to be given way when you signal. So sometimes, you just gotta earn your lane. I'd say the SUV earned his lane no matter how dangerous it was, unless he filtered and hit Alfa's side. Even if SUV successfully filters and causes Alfa to hit SUV's rear, Alfa is still in the wrong for causing an avoidable accident.

 

By virtue that Alfa horned and high beamed, Alfa was aware of the danger and 'forced' himself to take avoiding action. It's like when you're racing. The guy tries to overtake you. You have a choice to give him room or hold your line. If you don't give him room or he doesn't back off, you both crash and your race is over.

 

In this case, if Alfa held his position, there would be an accident. So to be honest, leaving intentions out as they are subjective, both drivers did right. Alfa can say all he wants but the fact was he lost the lane.

 

My view is the SUV did nothing wrong in filtering to the left. Alfa did nothing wrong in taking avoiding action and high beam, horn, stare. That's his right to express his displeasure.

 

My own experience is i get it frequently (similar to Alfa) from buses and taxis. Yes, i'm not happy i was forced to take avoiding action but they won the lane. Putting it simply, they got the lane first so it's really just a driving incident. No one is right or wrong.

Everthing on our tiny island is govern by rules and regulations, so I believe it'll be easy for you to draw conclusion on who should first be faulted and deemed the cause.

 

For me, I think the other driver didn't break as many rules compared to your actions.

 

No matter, these happen everyday on our roads, just forget and another day will come. :)

I like your perspective as it reflects reality on the roads. That's what it is, the one who is more agressive gets his way. It's dog eat dog.

 

I don't like your perspective because it's depressing and I feel there is actually no necessity for our road manners to spiral down this way. It's a road, not a track. There is no win, only lose. But that's me. Hahaha.

 

It's fortunate that common sense prevailed in the end and nothing more untoward happened than a few heated postings on the net. I know of incidences where the car behind don't give a flying and proceed to ram the car infront. Don't assume that everyone is in a sane mood, will behave logically, or unwilling to put up the money for repair bills just to prove a point. We all have different limits of tolerance, why test it? World Peace, yeah?

at about 2000hr after right turn from commonwealth ave west into toh guan, i was on the extreme right lane and a black cefiro was on the left of me, with you BEHIND the black cefiro. after the right turn, i have to filter to the left with less than 100m into the jurong east st 21 to IMM. i signal my intention after the right turn and you refuse to give way even though i m in front of you and edging through with the cefiro already very close to me. you not happy i filter in front of you, you can knock into me lor!! scare ah, got $$ buy alfa scare no $$ repair issit? you horn and hi beam after i turn into Jurong East St 21. with the queue on single lane st 21 turning into IMM, i still exercise courtesy to keep right and let you through on the left. when you come by, you stare at me. if not happy, can come down and we settle, no need to show me faces. alfa very FnF issit ??? you think conti car Big F ah? SG is already so small, with junctions every 200-300m, with inconsiderate drivers like you no wonder everyday got accident.. knnz

i wasn't trying to paint a picture of winning or losing. maybe my racing analogy gave this idea. so let me explain. the key words here are 'earning the lane'. i don't wish to go into intentions of both drivers here as that's assumption.

 

So let's deal with this factually. The SUV filters in (safe enough from his viewpoint). Alfa thinks he was being dangerous. SUV already filters. Life goes on despite Alfa's displeasure. There are times when i think it's safe enough to filter and when i did, i get loud horn but there's nothing i can do really.

 

As for your view of dog eat dog, i say its more of common sense prevailing. For eg, have u driven in Orchard where there's this zebra crossing with an endless flow of pedestrians walking past it? If u were to wait for every single pedestrian to successfully cross, it'll be tomorrow morning. So sometimes, u just gotta do what's necessary and do what's not conventional.

 

i guess in regards to both cars, they were using their common sense and eventually, both felt hard done by. This is how i respond. If i were alfa, i wave a hand gesture and rev off cos he nearly hit me! but i wont horn, beam etc. if i were suv, i gesture back as 'hey i didn't do it on purpose damn it'. but i wont go into forum and write. as someone said, it happen on the road and let it stay there.

 

Lastly, if the car u mention doesnt care and hits me from the back. im the least worried as all the insurance claims will go to him. i'll be more worried if i hit his back or side.

Hahaha. It's still ok if he throws you his name card and tell you to call his secretary. It's another thing when he throws you his name card and ask you to call his lawyer. He was forcing his way in while his rear bumper was right beside my mirror, you left two choices, horn or jam brake - to clear half a car length for him with a cab very closely behind?

 

I take option 1 + hard braking,it's by far the safest way.

 

I won't mind letting him earn his lane if his able to clear my car, all i need is to slow down. But coming in a such manner... it felt like been robbed..

Yes exactly...I've encountered many nasty jap/kor hatchbacks on the road as well. If I'm a nasty driver, I can even use a Chery QQ to give helluva time to a WRX STI.

anyway i already cool down since yesterday.

 

talking abt IMM, i think they should start charge parking soon, the entry barriers are all ready to be activated. parking is pretty challenging there and bound to see some conflicts when come to snatching precious lots

 

i believe the business will not be affect even if they start charging for the parking. funny thing is, there are alot of office people that works nearby but park in IMM.
