Volvo S40

i think it falls under the category of compact sedan, includes rivals like A3 and BMW 1 series

IMHO, A4 and BMW 3 series are more like executive sedan category

A3 and 1-Series have sedans? How can it be compared with the Volvo S40?

A4 and 3-Series are in the junior executive sedans. Which both the S40 and S60 occupies, though I'd think the S40 is more compact junior executive now.

Ok.i thought Mondeo,Insignia and S40 are around the same price (<180000) and are alternatives to the Big 3 German models you mentioned

Wonder when the Ecoboost Mondeo will be launched?

In Europe, Mondeo, Insignia, Passat, Mazda6, Accord, Camry, Optima, all competitor under Family Cars

Hi sorry to "hijack" this thread

i am looking at a 2nd hand volvo s40 (yr 2006) and wonder if any s40drivers here can advise on the following:

A. Any common major mechanical issues with s40?

B. Are spare parts and/or OEM parts readily available and are they overpriced as compared to parts for japanese sedan cars?

C. Whats the normal servicing cost range (assuming jut replacement of normal parts like spark plugs, engine oil, oil filter etc) at SM or other outside workshop which knows how to deal with a s40?

D. Whats the fuel consumption like asuming 50 ighway/ 50city? I have briefly test drive it and it feels very heavy... Relutance to move off if not enough accerlation. Is this normal with s40 de to its weight?

Thanks and apologies if simlar questions have been posed or answered before.

Besides wear n tear, there are no major mech issues wif the S40. There may be some issues wif the a/c not blowing cold air at times but it's an cheap & easy fix - look for ah huat at Markcool, he knows what to do. Batt life is quite short abt 1yr as the hot engine bay kills the batt -abt $250 each batt. Needless to say, parts are of course more ex than a jap B&B car. Servicing cost at at SM is abt $250 for a simple oli & filter change and can go up to $1k+ for more comprehensive. Plugs can last 60k but if need to change, it'll cost abt $300+. FC is reasonable for a heavy, big cc car. My 2.5L T5 used to return 8km/l which is no worse than a wheezy 2.0L camry. If u felt the S40's pickup was slow, i guess u tested the 2.4i. My advise is either get the T5 or dun bother wif the S40 at all. [;)]

Neutral Newbie

comparing S40 with BMW 3201 or even Mazda 6 series belonging to year 2009 - 2010, which will be a better buy? <_<

If ur looking for an N.A. car, 320i is probably good for u, if u want a TCed one, then go the S40 T5 way... I dun see how Mazda6 is comparable since i tink ur looking more into entry level continental cars...

mazda for reliability...

320i for haolian...

volvo s40 for somewhere in between the two...

FC wise volvo and 320i the same, averaging 8.x km/l for me. i have driven s40 2.4i, v50 2.4i, 320i. mazda 6 no idea, never driven.

Quite true, except i think 320i also nothing to haolian abt but it shd handle better than S40. If its not a T5 ur after, then 320i is the ur choice then. At this range, you cld consider IS250 too which in my opinion, better looking than ur 3 options, MarkX is quite nice also.
