Bah South African made c class hardly any damage on it. Imagine if the lorry had hit a W124 E-class or a W140 S-class. Fella's family probably had to prepare his funeral.

Trust me, the older merc were built like a tank. Solid as one, and reliable(subjective) as one.

harder body does not translate directly to driver/passenger safety..... the energy needs to be dissipated one way or another....

in a well constructed car, the passenger cell/cage should remain intact while the rest of the body panels, boot, body crumple to absorb the impact. No point having an armour like a tank with minimal damage to the panels but resulting in serious injuries when the force is transmitted to the driver/passenger... [shakehead]

Last time I saw this old sch Volvo (very rectangular type) got into accident with a jap car along bt timah infront tan chong. The Volvo door is dented like the merc in ur pic but the jap car front bumper drop, fagments of headlights all over the road and a severly dented maguard.

I heard old volvo car doors had a piece of steel to reinforce the strength and I think it is really there!

Thou Volvo is expensive but it really give u the "ingredients"!

Well, this pix was taken 2 weeks back at the jalan gali batu flyover (KJE towards BKE). Its a Merc. By the way it was raining and the car skidded and ram through the side railings before hitting a tree.

This Merc in the picture is a W210 E-Class. I had owned one before. You cannot use this to compare with the solid Mercs of old (e.g. W124 and earlier).

Merc started to 'lighten' their cars since the mid-90s when they introduced the W210 model.

Personally, I have compared that version with an older E-Class owned by a colleague.

We went round knocking the body panels and the W210 sounded hollow (konk-konk sound), while the older W124 sounded real solid. Same result when doors are slammed shut.

When it rains, the W210's roof also sounded hollow, especially when stationary under the big trees by the road side. Even my VW or Lexus did not have a hollow-sounding roof when it rains! When I complained to C&C, they told me that it was normal for the W210.

The real 'solid-tank'Mercs are thos manufactured before 1995. Gone are those days.

I remember alot of people change their badge & exterior from 200E to E200 with some even to the E200 Masterpiece [sunny][sunny][sunny]

Precisely why I had decided to change from my IS200 to an X3.

Saw many videos of sure-die front and side crashes, especially those involving smaller Japanese cars.

Saw one actual accident myself along the down slope of the Holland Road flyover towards Botanic Gardens.

VW Toureg slams the behind of a Nissan Sunny. When I passed the accident, the Sunny only existed from the front to the 'B' pillar. The back was smashed flat, from the boot, 'C' pillar up to just behind the back of the front seats. The back of the Sunny just did not exist anymore!!!

Anyone in the rear seat would have been literallly flattened / smashed.

The Toureg? I saw just a not-so-major concavity at the front bonnet and engine bay.

Neutral Newbie

Merz or continental cars are different unlike Japanese cars especially the newer generation, like piece of paper when comes to crash.

I love to see sedan Japanese cars become hatchback when being bang from the rear like the Nissan Latio sedan become Latio Hatchback which I have seen one some time back. thumbsup.gif
