I have a very close friend who is expecting her 1st child this August.

She asked me to give her comments on the names she listed down for her child and told me she having headache over it.

To me surprise its all english names(to me its the same as christian names).

My question is if u got a child, would u give him/her an english name?

What is ur reason?

I gave my daughter chinese and english names.

Just find that having an English name is a need in our society.

Having an English name makes someone easier to be referred to. [idea]

I will only give him a Chinese name for a start.

If the need arises in the future, he could choose his own western name.

I'll give my children Chinese names first. Later when they grow up, they can choose whatever ang moh mia they want. No need for official one. Ppl will still recognise them by the way they look. IMO dun be too bothered about it.

Hi,

I guess my family is the minority here. My grandma was a Peranakan, grandpa was chinese. My mother n her 7 other bro n sis all were english educated n never had chinese names. We speak only english n hokkien in the family, mostly english wif little hokkien only. During my older cousins time then, the gov force my aunties n uncles to adopt chinese names for my cousins. Mine was no exception.

As they have not much knowledge of chinese names, our chinese names were simple n w/o any meaning at all. As long as it is easy to write it out on any application form. We were given english name on the Birth Cert since birth. So in my Birth cert n NRIC, my English name comes 1st followed by the chinese name.

Mine is Adrian Lee XXXXX XXXXX

My mother have no chinese name, but her chinese fren help her direct translate her english name to chinese characters. Sounds very weird indeed, but its not registered in her NRIC lah.

So for my family, english name is more important than chinese name. My wife comes from a chinese family, initially, my MIL n FIL cannot pronounce my name but now can liao after 8yrs liao. But for my kids, it will be english name followed by chinese name same as me n my family.

R u in a kinda family whereby the grandpa has already list down the chinese name that ur generation must have?

My sis's in-law is as such family. I think its cool and is very good to follow these kinda tradition.

My nephews is in the qi(3) generation.

yup..

surname is fixed. The middle letter differs by ganeration..so the only word i need to think for my child is the last word..

eg, my surname is Ho(He2). middle name is Shu1(as in book).

So my generation all He2 Shu1

My dad's generation is He2 Zi3

My child's generation will be He2 Sheng1

The middle word follows a poem..
