Hi guys,

need some advise from any of you who needed to make a decision on the following...

current 5 seater cannot accomodate whole family.(including parents, wife, child and maid)

the need for full load is only during weekends or holidays.

i wonder if it is cheaper to have 2 small reliable cars instead...like a perodua(daihatsu with toyota engine at proton price) or to invest in a MPV which is more expensive and heavy on fuel consumption?

what do you guys think?

2 cars - you need 2 drivers, pay 2x parking. You want to move one big/bulky thing, how to split over 2 small cars? And 2x small cars doesn't mean safer than 1x MPV. If you need 2x cars during the week, then it makes more sense. Or else just live with 1x MPV.

And, why do you assume MPV more ex than 2x small cars and heavy on fuel? Depends on what the 2x small cars and 1x MPV are. total cost of 2x small cars maybe the same or more than 1x MPV.

2 small cars - 2 X insurance, 2 X taxes, 2 X ERP, 2 X Maintenace, 2 X Petrol, 2 X Drivers, 2 X time to find parking lots, 2 X installment, etc

1.8L MPV - 1.5 X insurance, 1.5 - 2 X road taxes, 1 X ERP, 1.2 X Maintenace, 1.2 X Petrol, 1 Drivers, 1 X time to find parking lots, 1.5 X installment, etc

there is no way 2 small budget car can cost less than a MPV. each car running cost $600 per month at the most budget level (havent include the the loan). You may consider those 1.5L 7-8 seater MPV like the suzuki APV and the Daihatsu Terios or the toyota 1.5l 7seater. Price is the not far from those budget small 5seater car.

perhaps 2 small cars but 1 normal plate & 1 opc..

but troublesome part IMO is need 2 drivers,2 parking charges..

but now there are more smaller cc mpvs like freed,sienta,terios,apv..take ur pick..i myself waiting 4 freed 8 seater..

nowsaday these 1.5L MPV are priced quite low (less than 70k) compared to their bigger brothers, and FC wise, there are quite good.

I myself is driving a 7-seater toyota sienta. FC 13km/L. should be not bad for a MPV.

and that day i just saw a Honda Freed on the road, fell in love with its looks immediately! looks like a big MPV to me although it is also having a 1.5L engine.

and since you seems to be able to afford 2 cars, then why not get the VW Touran MPV. MPV with sports car performance, yet very good FC and still less than 100k.

The logical choice would be to buy a MPV to cater to your needs.

But if cost is a concern....why not buy the car that you want and take public transport over the weekend ? Just a suggestion.

Owning 2 cars would have a big impact on the running cost.

2 set of road tax, parking, insurance etc....

Or consider getting a small car for your daily runabout....a weekend MPV for your weekend runs.

thanks for all the feedback...here's a twist that i forgot to mention.

my parents do not stay with me...in the event of having 2 cars, one will be at their place while the other will be at mine.

double the expenses for 2 cars can be quite scary. [sweatdrop]

Keep your current car.

Give your parents whatever the amount you plan to spend on the second car including monthly expenses.

They should be more than happy to take a taxi and save up the rest.

If this was the only choice, I'd go for 2 small cars instead of an MPV. Remember this is all SUNK expenses, and cars are NOT investments.

However, you may want to evaluate if its cheaper to keep your current car (sunk costs already paid for) and sign up for NTUC car coop, paying extra only when you actually need to ferry everyone. If you look at what you've ALREADY paid for your current car, including interest expenses and monthly installments, you'll probably want to keep your current car through to 10 years.

are u still driving your pug?

MPV doesn't really mean high FC. my range from 11, and on school hols 13-14.If u do a lot of smooth highway the figure could be bettter. But mine's a small MPV.

But if you are looking at a 2L or more MPV, FC will be worse.

If you want 2 cars, perhaps a OPC MPV would be good since your condition is full load on weekends only.

U only benefit if u do utilise the 2nd car heavily on a weekend. Else the 2nd car will be sorely under utilsed

Get a small MPV. Your needs are the same as mine. I bought the Terios 7 3 months back. It is good for occasional use for full load. I preferred it over the Sienta as it is bought in by AD. FC wise, it is achieving 11km/L most of the time. I haven't gone for the 1st servicing yet. The best part of Terios 7 is the rear airconditioning which aren't available in many small/medium MPVs.
