Seeing as how I have to whack you over the head with a mallet...

1 Example 1

2. Example 2

3. Example 3

4. Example 4 "Simba, the beloved son, is wracked by guilt and impotence until the ghost of his father gives him instruction on what actions he should take". From here

5. Example 5 "What Dreams May Come. The character Annie, wracked by guilt over the death of her husband Chris, commits suicide and is damned to hell" From here

6. Example 6 "It seems that these days, wracked by guilt at the humanitarian crisis it has created in the Middle East, the West has turned to Africa for redemption."...From the Washington Post no less

Do you want me to continue or is this enough?

OK, u win. Happy?

Dun want to waste time on this. for me, "wracked" is for "wracking my brains.....", i.e. voluntary wracking. Wrecked with guilt is where a person's conscience is behind "destroyed" or "ruined" by feeling of guilt (non-voluntary). Maybe i meant, wrecked by guilt, happy?

And by the way, a competent english speaker may not help here cos in terms of speaking, wreck and wrack sounds the same. The speaker does not have to know whether it is "a" or "e". By the way, i am a (former) NUS national debater (albeit long time ago). Not dat i want to yaya but since u mention competent speaker...and journalists are not perfect either.

Bzzzzt...wrong again, wreck and wrack do not sound the same...

Do you want me to go find cites again or can you take my word for it?

And so what if you are former NUS debater, those skills certainly aren't on show here.

Wrecked by guilt, is destroyed by guilt

Wracked with guilt (notice the difference hor) is consumed with guilt, the guilt is all you can think about, but your life is not neccessarily ruined.

Now I will tell an old joke that you may find some parallels in (although perhaps not given the willingness to think you have shown so far)

What's the difference between a blond and a computer?

You only have to punch the information into a computer once [laugh]:D:o

Sidetrack (which someone mentioned above): What drivers and bikers should do to really really keep safe, is to assume all other road-users are idiots, that their decisions can never be predicted. And even if they can, random probability strikes sometimes! Cliched but true - better to be safe than sorry.

Yes, agreed fully.

if its a one lane way, and u need to turn right. But prob is that the oncoming traffic is heavy, and u know it is probably gg to be a long wait...

What i usually will do is to:

1. signal early (i am 100% sure the accident TS talked about wont happened if his friend signaled early)

2. slow down and approach the turning spot.

3. Drive as close to the centre line as possible to wait so as to allow the cars behind you that want to go straigt to 'squeeze' past you from the left (sg roads usually are wide enuff, unless its a lorry).

Other than displaying your intention, take a more macro view of the surroudings will help everyone...

but if you really have to meet with a retard driver/rider that decides to bang ur rear as he 'squeeze' pass., or to hit ur front from the oncoming side.... u really lan lan also.

Hi All

My fren got into this minor accident. But as a matter of principle for discussion, would like to know your learned opinions.

Scenario:

My fren traveling on a single lane, 2 way road, i.e. single lane in each direction with solid line in the middle. He wanted to turn into a HDB estate on the RIGHT side, i.e. have to cut across the road which traffic is coming in the opposite direction. When he make his turn, a bike slams into him, hitting the back door. The bike was actually trying to over-take him. My fren did NOT put on his signal. The rest is not important, ny fren got down and help him etc etc, injury to motorcyclist was minimal.

Analysis:

Who is more in the wrong? The only thing my fren did wrong is that he forgot to turn on his signal. Actually he told me look in the mirror see no one so tot not necessary to turn on, the biker must have been in his blind spot.

To me the fault more on the biker (80%?) mainly cos: (1) the vehicle behind supposed to keep safe distance from vehicle in front which he obviously did not (2) it is very forseeable when a car in front of u slows down when approaching a turn that the reason he is slowing down is to make the turn (3) in trying to overtake my fren, biker was riding on the road that was coming in the opposite direction, i.e. riding against the flow of traffic - isn't dat worse than not turning on the signal? I m not sure but is it allowed to even overtake on a single lane road? I tot i remember cannot.

In this scenario, although biker did not actually hit the rear of the car (bumper) but is also considered hit my fren from behind right? Cos he was behind my fren. Also, my fren is not obliged to check for vehicles on his right cos it is a single lane and he is already at the edge of the lane turning right, correct? Its not like lane 2 filtering to lane 1 then of course must check for on coming vehicles.

Will insurance say due to my fren never on signal then is my fren fault? Can't be right? Cos thousands of ppl don't signal when they turn or change lane and if everytime that happens is grounds for an accident then i open car workshop liao.

Anyway my fren workshop say 50-50 but i tink very unfair. i also used to be a biker and defensive riding is No 1 priority.

You can tell your friend to sleep well.

Years ago almost the same thing happened in Seletar Camp.

One lane each way.

A motorist was turning right.

A bike came from behind him, overtaking him at exactly the same time that he turned right.

The collision killed the biker.

The case went to court.

The driver was acquitted of the charges.

The lesson to take home is: overtaking vehicles have NO right of way over the vehicle in front.

Ask your (friend's) lawyer to dig up the case.

but after u are consumed by dat guilt u can also be ruined by it wad....can't eat, can't sleep, can't have sex until wife leaves u, can't perform ur job until get terminated, resort to heavy drinking, etc....so life ruined lor.....

"wracked" and "wrecked" is prounounced more or less the same la, dun tell me u pronounce "wreck" as "wreaked" (which if another different word altogether which i am sure a smart mouth like u would know). my point abt being a debater is that a competent speaker is not necessarily a competent writer (and vice versa) and i only brought it up cos u started it first.

Too bad ur jokes aren't as good as ur grammar. we dun "punch" information into blonds (or any other humans) anyway.

Too bad you dun have an imagination and dun know the difference between literally and figuratively.

I mean I could literally reach thru the screen right now ( :D:o ) and strangle you for the intransigence you are displaying.

And again, wrack adn wreck sound very different, because I obviously do have to go and pound the information into you....

Here you go....

Your friend, huh?

You defend your friend like as if you were behind the wheel.

Sorry, its just my observation. I give you the benefit of doubt.

Anyhow, based on your description, it doesn't say anything about the oncoming traffic flow. Was it heavy, or no traffic at all? Because if there was traffic, your friend's car's brakelights would have come on as he would have to wait for a gap to proceed. If the car was positioned biased to the centre line of the road, it would be obvious he was trying to turn. The biker should have been reading the situation.

But, if there was no traffic and your friend simply went from driving straight to sweeping across the road into the HDB carpark, the motorcycle would have had no warning what was coming. In such a situation he should have checked his mirrors, and blindspot, even if his signals were on.

In any case, changing lanes/directions without signalling earns you points in driving test, and is also a bookable offence by TP.

Your friend is in the wrong.

There's thousands of people who don't use signal light, bcoz all their signal lights are broken or their hands are broken and can't flick the signal light.

I was on a bike once and overtake a car. Same thing he didn't signal and just decide to turn.

Luckily my reaction was fast enough, and I had no choice but to turn with him.

Fxxking eshole is all I can say.

ya, my fren. Not me. up to u to believe. and for the last time i am NOT defending, i am seeking CONSTRUCTIVE opinions/experiences (and apparently the odd english lesson or two). i already said i agree my fren is in the wrong for not turning on the signal, but the biker also majorly wrong.

it was a quiet road, nobody else on the on-coming traffic lane. If there was, i guess the biker would have attempted have overtake by going to the lane of on coming traffic. my fren did slow down but did not come to a COMPLETE stop before turning (as no on coming traffic).

i am sure overtaking by going on to the lane of opposite flow of traffic is immediate failure?
