Nzy Twincharged October 14, 2010 Share October 14, 2010 i was to believe from a guru not to leave it in "D" for too long- does changing from "D" to "N" every time at traffic stops really wear out the gearbox faster??? Some people believe keep changing from D to N alot will wear it out faster. But I don't think so cuz my previous car got no problems with the gearbox after 10 years although I always change from D to N when I stop. ↡ Advertisement

Benarsenal Turbocharged October 14, 2010 Share October 14, 2010 Isn't it supposed to be good practice to change from D to N when stop? Not really. Because traffic lights only a couple of minutes, best is just leave it in D and apply handbrake. Put to N only if stopping for extended period of time (like say, waiting for someone). Thedream 3rd Gear October 14, 2010 Share October 14, 2010 Step on brakes to prevent it from rolling back or use handbrake. Then its pedal to metal. LEt the engine rev as high as possible and then slowly let go hand brake or release brake pedal. Auto cars got no clutch but they have torque converter. The engine will pump as much ATF as possible thru the converter till there is sufficient torque to move the car. If pedal to metal still doesn't work, Then your car simply cannot go up the slope at all. But it doesn't happen unless you are driving a Chery QQ. I have seen a QQ stuck at Bugis carpark slope. Need people to help it push...lol.... you want him to buang is it?... lightly on accelerator can oredi lah... your instructions are for burnouts. But if you do this on an AWD car like the Forester, the transmission will piang...

SimonTan 2nd Gear October 14, 2010 Share October 14, 2010 (edited) Different country has different style of using the 123 auto gear. In Singapore I think no body ever use it, always keep in D. But I have seen in china the China drivers of luxury car, some of them do use the 123 gears when they go up/down the ramp carparks. I guess it's taught in their driving school? How about Singapore? Was it taught and compulsory used in the slope during test day? Anyone taking auto gear test can comment? Edited October 14, 2010 by SimonTan

Majordan 2nd Gear October 15, 2010 Share October 15, 2010 wah.. D plus handbrake is no-no! D means the car wants to move forward. handbrake means u force the car to lock the wheels. this is unnatural

IF car die die cannot go up slope when you step on accelerator, only way is to spin the torque corverter as much as possible to ge the power to move the car. Btw, I don't think you can do burnouts for AT cars unless the engine is really powerful.

Cuz u use the footbrake also forcing the car to lock the wheels while the car wants to move forward. Just that handbrake only the rear wheels lock. Jp66 5th Gear October 15, 2010 Share October 15, 2010 i was to believe from a guru not to leave it in "D" for too long- does changing from "D" to "N" every time at traffic stops really wear out the gearbox faster??? for my previous 2 rides, I always switch to N at traffic junction, never repair the gearbox, but not sure gearbox worn out or not as I sold them b4 the 5th years. I never used the 1,2,3 but for my current ride, I started using the manual shift '+' and '-' recently.
Tom_kkh 1st Gear October 15, 2010 Share October 15, 2010 (edited) leave at D will do dont anyhow change to N from D when stopped at Traf junction..will wear out ur gear box faster This is a myth that i always wanted to verify. Many say if you change often, gear box will kapo early. My colleauges in KL and even my bro has been shifting D than N than D again whenever they are at the traffic lights for ages. bro = Mazda 3 for 6 years already, no problem, he don even change transmission oil. 3 colleagues driving proton, 1 = 7 years, 1 = 5 years and another 8 years all no problem till date. KL case is worst because they got more jam than singapore. the last time one of my colleague drove me for 30 minutes to my hotel, i counted he did no less than 50 times from D to N to D whenever he is in the jam or traffic light. So wht gives? just curious if anyone been doing so and got their gear box gone case or just all hearsay? Edited October 15, 2010 by Tom_kkh

So wht gives? just curious if anyone been doing so and got their gear box gone case or just all hearsay? i'm sure when the car engineers designed the transmission, they put in safety factor, which should allow people to change between N and D for many many times without substantial damage. If the gears wear off until problems start to surface, most likely it's not because of the D-N-D changing....more probable is the transmission servicing wasn't done properly or on time, or the driver often switches from D to R without letting the car come to a complete stop, thus damaging the gears. Haziqko Clutched October 15, 2010 Share October 15, 2010 Actually its no different from using the foot brake to keep the car stationary when in D. Cuz u use the footbrake also forcing the car to lock the wheels while the car wants to move forward. Just that handbrake only the rear wheels lock. thats why almost all accidents are caused by careless auto drivers taking for granted they step on or apply the foot/hand brakes. Those brakes might not be applied fully thus causing the vehicle to move or jerk suddenly if not applied properly, and when he/she panics after(like on the phone or looking elsewhere) stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes... AWD is a no no... and before anyone shouts, yes, this will potentially break your transmission if not shorten its life substantially... ↡ Advertisement
