This screwed up policy of pegging GDP should be removed. And stop believing the myth that GDP per capita is a measure of a country's average salary.

 

In a hypothetical scenario where, I am a car factory worker and I can build 1 car/ month. My boss tells me the company will "invest" in new equipment that will aid me greatly to build 2 car/ month and voila...my output (GDP) is doubled.

 

But my boss tells me since my job is easier now, I will not get much increment so my salary stays more or less the same.

 

End of story.

 

Now substitute "new equipment" with foreign workers and you get the idea.

 

I am not against companies making investment in equipment/ higher tech but this is to show why GDP/ GNP is a flawed method of determining if the workforce's incomes have actually risen.

 

If you want to see that, I think IRAS has better stats, especially for the bottom 35% as their tax filing is straightforward.

hv they looked into they pple cant buy or why pple cant afford? building more rental flats blindly is suicidal. they need to know why they are building, for whom, etc. not all need rental flats. some can be saved by change of policy.

What KBW is doing now should have been done by MBT when he was in charged of MND. Is KBW more capable than MBT or MBT was sleeping on his job when he was the Minister for National Development? MBT should be held accountable and should return his million $ salary for not doing the job.

 

On the other hand, the measures taken by KBW, such as building more flats, increase supply of rented flats, reversing the policy of allowing Opposition MPs to rent void decks to build place for MPS; etc, actually reflects very badly on MBT. Precisely one of the major points that many Singaporeans missed this GE.

 

We have too many GLCs competing with the local SMCs here to the extent the people are being choked out in business.

 

While this may seem like a good thing, it essentially passes control of prices over to 1 or 2 large entities like Singtel, Far East who can then control prices at their will, playing the closed market to their advantage and to the citizen's detriment.

 

As with all things, competition breeds efficiency and better pricing for the citizens.

 

Privatise the GLCs and use them to expand into growing overseas markets. This will also have the effect of creating more jobs as skilled Singaporeans are required to travel overseas to carry out their duties. You can't take in everything without spitting back out some. If you're going to make Singapore an international playground, you better be prepared to be open to the idea of widely travelled Singaporean citizens who have options.
