what i heard is not too good because the long period the steering rest on one side creates prolonged pressure on either side of the power steering fluid or hydraulic.

Thats what i was being told also. if not centre position, the wheel alignment will go crazy.....

But i dont know how true it is. Its just a habit already. i always make sure its dead centre.

Right and wrong. So many cars in Malaysia also parked head in with tilted steering wheel, nothing happen also. I think it is a myth. But can some expert please advise?

Most power steering are electrical type now. As long as you don't wrangle and wank at the steering wheel when it's parked, I see no harm whether the steering wheel is fully aligned centre or not.

Hmmm... is this a job for Mythbusters or Topgear?

Technology improvement to electrical steering now.

Even so, I guess the hydraulic steering should also have improved on the rubbers seals, etc.

It might be true 20years ago....but now?

Well, the Altis I'm driving requires to turn the steering 45 degree before being able to lock it.

If off-center were to cause problem to the steering, guess Toyota won't design it this way then.

Anyway, I'm no expert in this area, just sharing my thoughts only.

Anyone has better insights please share.

Parking wheels not centered..

Imho not to the extent of damaging the balance nor alignment, the pressure is insignificant compare to cornering, even at 30kph on particular tire.

But safe practices won't hurt either.

You can turn the steering wheel slightly to one side to activate the steering lock. Of course, anything to the extreme is no good, so it's probably not a good idea to park with the steering totally locked to one side's limit.

Unless you're parking at an extreme slope and turn the steering in a direction to stop the car against the curb, in case the brakes fail.

Even when learning to drive and park, the testers penalize you if at the end of the parking maneuver, the wheels are not aligned straight forward.

But it's also true that in malaysia you can see lots of cars parked with steering turned to one side, either to counter slope, or to deter thieves. And their cars seem to last longer than ours, so...

in Singapore, normally reverse park with wheels straight

in msia, always head in corner lot with steering all the way to left or right....

No issues with my alignment so far...

i think it is more a case of good practice than a myth.

also i think cannot just quote the number of cars in malaysia parked with wheels turned to one side as your supporting evidence

1) most of these cars are probably parked for short while so they don't bother. i personally don't bother if i know i am parking one hour at most. also i think the motivation is to prevent car theft

2) even slight left or right is ok for most people who abide by this practice. most people are more mindful of full lock left or right.

I don't think it will cause problems. I have read that when parking on slope, a safety precaution is to turn the wheels such that if the handbrakes fails and the car rolls, the wheels will hit the curb and stop the car from moving.

Anyway, if really want to talk about balance, how about uneven tyre pressure, uneven wear and tear to suspension etc? You can keep your steering wheel dead centre when at a stop, but so many other things can result in the same 'problems' you are trying to avoid.

For hydraulic power steering, not center is ok as long as it is not turned to its extreme right or left.

Those who have done bleeding on their hydraulic steering will notice that the fluid sprays out from the bleeding nipple at much bigger force at the extreme ends. So even under normal driving it is very damaging to the system if the steering is turned to the extremes.
