my approach is simple, i decide not base on car selling price but rental price approach...

im currently renting a latio at $1200/mth (7yrs) + $600(3yrs) the contract is 10yrs....

so, if i want to re-contract early for a new Altis for example at $1500/mth(10yrs) or $1800/mth (7yrs) + $600(3yrs), i wont bite.........

how much i'm willing to pay per mth will have to wait till the end of my current contract... but as of now, i'm not willing to pay so much more per mth just for the new car smell... [:p]

Most people don't really care about depreciation as it is inevitable....what they are most concerned is the price of car, how much i pay every month, petrol consumption and sometimes resale value...

Btw to get a depreciation of <=$7500 a year is consider good liao...

Young couples normally stretch a little too much if just started family and have car....

If 7,500 is the depre for the entire car.. yes I agree its good. But your 7,500 is depre for the COE only.

Say a Altis OMV at 15,000

COE say 75,000

Sold at 120K now (for example)

Let say you drive the car for 10 yrs. loan 100K (20K down)

End of the 10th year, you will get parf 50% == 7,500.

Loan interest at 1.88% period 10 yr == interest == 18,800.

Total repayable loan = 118,800.

Total payable after parf = 118,800 - 7,500 = 111,300.

Depr is at 11,130 per year! Also not forgetting the 20K down. Total car ownership is $131,300. depr goes up to $13,130.

This means that effectively the monthly repayment is like car rental.

It is not that people are rich to buy cars....

For lst time buyer yes they have some cash but majority are existing car owners.

A breakdown -

If you trade in your old car e.g. for $50k. This will offset the selling price of the new car so remaining cost you will need to get a loan.

So for a VW Jetta - $150k - $50k, have to loan additional $100k and if spread out over 10 years each month need to pay installment $1100+, wife and husband each 50/50. Petrol wont use too much if drive to work and after work fetch wife/kids go home. Maintaineance wise service every 10,000k which is around 6 months for $300 average.

It is still affordable but provided wife and husband share cost and maintain the car properly.

From what I know this is how most people (at least people i know) do it...

I won't share the cost of car ownership with my wife coz if she has a share in the car, i cannnot zhng the car as i like. [laugh]

Looking at new car prices now. Unless you are really well off, maybe a disposable income of 8k or more per month and spending 2k per month on car will not affect your current lifestyle, you can get a new car. Right now, new car prices is not economically sound for me. W/o the $7.5k COE depri per year, I can go for a good holiday for 2 every year.

You should salute those who buy Cat A (Jap) now...

Plenty of Cat B new cars around...

err...wats wrong to buy Cat A ( Jap or MIK ) now?

buying BMW or Mercedes now means higher outlay and higher monthly running cost for sure.

how about show some numbers:

If Cat A ( Jap or MIK brand ) .... deprec per is xxx

If BMW/Mercedes ...... deprec per yr is xxx

If the numbers are close then it makes sense......

rental car don't need to pay road tax, insurance and wear & tear maintenance.

There is still come diff between the premium conti n jap cars.

But if u take vw passat n Camry (both similar size car), the dep cost per year is very similar after u take into account the running costs.

Is it true that VW cars are still plagued by DSG gearbox problems?? Was advised against this make, and would like to find out more, beside relying on internet search.

After paying the monthly... not much left over to zhng... [knife] [knife] [knife]

No choice, in today's environment, need dual-income (have to rope in the wifey too) to afford car and kids! [laugh]

Hop over here to ask a general question.

Is there any penalty for early redemption of loan? Let say the penalty calculate base on the principle amount rather the outstanding amount at the date of redemption.

The back i am refering is HSBC auto loan.

Thanks in advance.

no doubt maybe a few hundred $$ more, BMW( bring to motor workshop) work shop bills not doubt under warranty will kill you. my friend BMW 523 2008 model, milage 48k, regularly service by agent. gearbox repair quoted by performance 11 k. you can afford the installment but not the maintenance. If you are a salary worker without much savings, it is still better to stick to japanese.

What about 2010 onwards model for BMW? Do they have the same maintenance cost?
