  1. 1. Will you ditch your car IF public transport is free and have zero breakdowns, all smooth as butter?

    • Yes, in a heartbeat

Let's be honest..

If we were to have a virtually almost perfect public transport,

No breakdowns, no delays, free of charge (citizen only, sorry! Others please pay up), reach everywhere on the island, comfy, fast and efficient, etc.

Would you ditch your car?

Will or won't is not the question, The substance is. [;)]

With the only people in the whole planet willingly pay close to $100k piece of paper that value confirm to evaporate by the second and vanishes in 10yrs, i think this question is not even near its absurdness. ^_^

Sorry, nope. Just look at the crowds. Give me free also i don't want. The island is overcrowded and even a perfect public transport system cannot change that.

Worst case scenario if it becomes unaffordable to drive i'll get rid of the car and buy another one or two motorcycles.

If COE is actually a paper, I will gladly frame it & put it in my living room. How many of the paintings you have is worth 100k?

I posted my thoughts in the other thread, but I also agree the overcrowding issue has to be addressed.

No point having super duper public transport when you can't even board it in the morning/evening.

[laugh] Hahahaha... True..

A fading one at that... And...

A $100k painting could worth more after 10 yrs...

Of course, there is a sign up membership fee to join MCF of 200K per year. Have you paid yours? Just kidding.

I technically paid 10% of that for my piece of paper, and I am not sure if I would pay 10 times that in order to call myself a car owner if I had to buy a car today. Cab fares have gone up but not by a factor of 10. Public transport is actually more appealing now (monetarily speaking).

Of course, the strikes against PT is that they're breaking down, high profile accidents, and now labour unrest. But still....... anyway I yearn for the day that Singapore is like Hong Kong where cabs are plentiful and you almost never have to spend too long waiting on a kerbside for one to come along. That's convenience and that's a genuine replacement for a personal vehicle.

The problem here is that people have been used to driving car, so its hard for people to go back to take public transport again. Imagine, if one day internet or cell phone was taken from you. We are so used to internet & cellphone, that its hard to live without them, even though we are doing fine before we have internet or cell phone.

It depends whether you regard driving as a means to an end (i.e., getting around from A-to-B) or because you like driving - and then how much you value driving as opposed to cabbing everywhere. For instance, a typical car will owe its owner between $1,500 to $2,000 a month if not more - can you see yourself spending that much on cabbing everywhere? I can't either......
