Sorry man, I am a noob in this. Which part are you referring to as the myth? That his watch is entirely made in Switzerland or that our local ones are assembled in HK?

Bro, being a noob is one thing, but being gullible is another.

Sorry, i just dont expect you to believe a fella who is trying to pass his watch as better just becos he bought it in Switzerland.

For that simple comment that the seller made regarding the assembly of Rolexes in HK, it's clear that he is the noob.

Btw there is also another myth floating that an angmoh sailor went to HK in the 70s and from the ship near the shore he could see the Rolex factory. When he got onshore, he visited the factory and bought a Rolex for a real good price. Many years later, he realised that his "Rolex" had different features from an exact model from the same era. Wow! Isnt that brilliant?

But I didn't say I believe his watch is better than those assembled in HK. Although if it is true that his watch was entirely made in Swiss and not assembled in HK then psychologically at least, some might prefer his "pure blood". And to be fair to the seller he did not actually say that his is better. He just stated that his was made entirely in Switzerland as an additional selling point to maximize his position (which is normal thing to do in all BNS cases). It's like how some sellers might say their watch is only worn on weekends or how their camera always kept in dry cabinet, etc.

The main thing about this post was that I was just surprised (you could say disappointed) to find out about the whole out-sourcing thing.

Hope this link clarifies.

It is very clear cut. If still cannot understand, can't help you there.

It's not that I didn't understand. Just that I had the impression that all swiss made watches were wholly made in Switzerland and was a little disappointed to find out otherwise. That's all.

But thanks for the very useful link & info [thumbsup]

It is the case for all products, not just watches.

This is called globalization and outsourcing and it has been happening for long time.

The other day there was this middle-aged guy next to me at the shoe department at some orchard mall, he was checking out the Dr Martens shoes.

After looking a while, he turned to me in disgust and exclaimed "I can't believe it! Even this is made in China!" And he walked away. I suppose the Doc martens in his time were made in England and the Anglophile in him couldn't come to terms with the Sun setting on his Empire, so to speak.

I could only offer a sheepish smile. In my mind I was thinking "jesus dude, where have you been for the last 30 years?"

Ya I know. My Nikes and Addidases are made in Vietnam. But these are not luxury stuff that costs an arm and leg (sometimes more). Just like apple products also in made in China. There is even a saying what isn't made in China these days?

Neutral Newbie

In todays world there is no such thing as true manufacturers. The materials would be from somewhere else anyway.

In the early years , maybe.

Yes, the raw materials would be sourced from a number of places, no doubt.

But in the sense of being a manufature, the parts created like pinions, cases, jewels, crystals, etc....they'd all be made/refined/assembled/QC'd in house. This is what allows only a select few prestigious brands call themselves manufactures.

Like "Swiss made", there is an objective test for this status, so there are still true manufactures
