But there is only thing I consider worse than these jokers - our politicians and journalists who blame Singaporeans for this and that, perpetuating a low morale state that feeds on itself.

Good observation.

I think Singa is just a grand excuse by some senior braddel dogs or some propaganda chief thinking of ways to attract eyeballs.

 

If Singa was really a courtesy mascot, he should protest when there was a rally cry once every few years to demean, reprimand and threaten peasants in a high handed way. Remember there was a reporter who questioned "what if gahment is nurturing a indifferent society". The reply was atrocious. Did Singa come out?

Hate breeds hate, Singaporeans are not emotionless without a reason.

 

It was several decades in the making by negative silencing and personal motivated hard truths intended to brainwash to a defined hierarchy.

Got savings meh? Someone still have to send the tray and plates for cleaning. Someone still have to clean the table.

Few things the customers could do, but obviously not compulsory:-

 

A. Say a genuine thank you, with a genuine smile, to the uncle or aunts who clean the table for them

B. Or buy him/her some tidbits, or a cup of coffee, can of drink, etc to show their appreciations

C. Or help tidying the mess on the table a bit

D. Some other gestures of appreciation

 

In our society, the table clearers' job is hardly treated with dignity despite it being an honest and essential service. Maybe the above appreciations help one way or another

 

Well I always will say thank you to the uncle/auntie cleaning my table, my heart ache when I see how old they are and are still working for that tiny little sum of money every month

korea return tray system very good. singapore should copy from them.

 

When you reach the return tray area.

a) Throw away the leftover into the dustbin

b) Box 1 - for cultery

c) Box 2 - for plates/bowl

d) Box 3 - cups

d) empty tray leave it on the moving conveyor belt and someone (inside the kitchen) will retrieve and clean it.

 

We go one step at a time....

 

If Singaporean can just bring the tray to the return area, very happy leow, if they split it machiam like strike TOTO $10 million draw...

yesterday was at a foodcourt having dinner. caught a quick glimpse of an old table cleaner popping a prawn into his mouth. that was picked from a plate which he cleared. my heart almost crushed at the sight. wanted to help him.. perhaps buy him a dinner or give him some money but couldnt think of a discreet way to do so in case his pride was strong. any bros or sis here can share tactful methods if such scenarios were to be encountered again?

That should be the way if really want to be effective in reducing workload. The current way of dumping the tray at the collection area only creates a mess for the poor auntie/uncles to clear. Makes me think the real objective is just to make sure you clear the table to make way for other customers.

 

The operators will be smiling coz that means faster turnaround and more business.

I feels that return tray or not is not so important.

More people should eat inside the tray so that their tray can be easily clear away after eating.

 

I see a lot of people remove their plates and bowls and put away the tray.

This way they usually throw any unwanted food on the table which is difficult and takes time to clear away.

The current way is more like a half-step, just look at the mess at the collection areas of hawker centres that implemented this.

have u actually return your own tray before you made this comment? for ur info..there'll be at least a cleaner who is stationed at the tray collection area who will be sorting out the returned trays of cutlery and dining wares

The one I went to at AMK during lunch time was totally filled up and no cleaner present. I was stuck between not returning the tray of adding to the mess.

 

At Tampines round market I also hardly see any cleaner there, but that one the collection rack bigger (or maybe nobody return their trays).

 

I actually prefer to sort out before returning like someone mention about Korean system.

In many other countries these type of menial jobs are usually done by youngsters (part-time), as a means to earn pocket money. It also teaches them about hard work from young.

 

We as a society need to reflect upon ourselves if our only source of hard labour is from elderly retirees and cheap foreigners.

Some (maybe most) parents may not like this, but it can help make our young people to appreciate hard life more, and hopefully become humble:-

 

Instead of using older uncles/aunties to help clear tables, use youngsters. Cant attract them to do it? No problem, make this part of school's CCA. Let these young punks learn the meaning of service and hardship since nowadays SAF doesnt really do it any more. The supervisors will submit to the school a report of how these students perform as table cleaners. When martial art students have to start with humble chores before the masters will teach them, why cant the students do something similar? Our strawberry generation needs to be toughened up a bit.
