Kumho KU31.. come in

Hi fellas.

Just wanted to borrow this thread as I can't create a topic for now.

My car seems to have negative camber and is wearing my tyres out unevenly. I'm sure this is a common problem:

tyre.jpg

It's so bad that the inner material is showing and I'm planning to change tyres and get alignment done. Now my question is, is this camber adjustable? Can the tyre shop that does alignment do this adjustment?

This tyre has been on for the past 2 years and If the camber adjustment costs alot (with camber kit and all) then I might just go with tyre replacement and alignment as my ride has 4 years left to it (Hyundai i30).

Comments pls. Thanks!

Its not camber that caused this excessive inner wear issue.

Is the pax that caused it.

Maybe it's time to ask missy to lose some weight or change to another slimmer one?

Actually, I think you have toe & suspension issues instead of camber.

I persona POV , camber kit is not for me for sure.

I would say is quite normal to have front 2 tyres eat more the inner part or front left eat a little more out too

Alignment to me is not 100% necessary to me if I don't mount curb and any severe impact or pot hole.

Our island road is too good so we have very rare occasion need to do the job.

for the picture case just need to get a good set of tyre and drive

Well, firstly, there is a camber issue, but I've seen cars with worse angles than mine, so it probably isn't as bad.

And as for the pic I posted, the wearing is not gradual at all, so like what some of ya guys mentioned, it's the alignment to begin with. Over 4 years with this car, I changed tyres twice and rims once.. and I frequent Malaysia, and have hit uneven roads (pretty bad ones) quite a bit, so I have to admit my alignment is way over due.

@Furrynadz

My tyre is the same size as the rims, if not obviously it won't fit.. LOL. I did change my rims from 16 to 17" and I got the appropriate tyre so as not to affect the overall diameter. From the pic, the gap from the fender to the tyre seems wide, but that's because the way the pic was taken. It's stock.. no lowering/lifting of the car done.

@Vhtfhwlego

Don't quite get what you mean by "the pax caused it". You mean my passengers are too heavy?

I'll just go change tyres, do alignment and ask the workshop for some advice.

Any recommendation where to get cheap tyres and alignment done at the same time?

I'm using KU31 215/45/17. I used to get mine from SOH tyres in AMK but I they're not equipped for alignment. AL tyres quotes at $115, but not sure on alignment.. Thinking of calling up Arrow..

Thanks fellas.

I get from Arrow as well, and I don't think they do alignment.

Just make sure they do balancing on, at least, the front 2 tyres.

After getting the tyres, I'll drive to nearby AMK Autopoint to do alignment at Kenny.

He provides camber kit, if you need.

Arrow now has a new Hunter machine for alignment. I just did it there few months back.

Oh didn't know that. Thanks for the update.

Got my current set there a year+ ago.

Can you remember how much they charge for the alignment?

Looking at the pic, the wear forms a groove. It does not seem to be caused by the tarmac. The tyre could have grazed certain inner parts of the wheel arc!

Tat what I mentioned before

The rim seems to be wrong fit meant, especially in width n offset, rim got upsize but offset maintain same or bigger number thus pushing it in

I got my Vietnam-made Kumho KU31 at $75 each from ALTC, but am regretting every moment.

The only advantages are that these tyres are sticky and grip well, and are cheap to buy.

Compared to my previous used Thai-made Michelin Pilot Sports 3 that has done 30,000km, the Kumho KU31(done 2,000km todate)

- are noisier than the Michelins even though they are new

- has only 1 ply polester on the sidewall, which makes it very soft, resulting in poor cornering, with lots of body roll

- has lots of resistence and does no roll as freely when I engage free gear to cruise to a stop when approaching a red traffic light

- Steering pulls to one side when going past a puddle of water at >50km/h. The Michelins went through puddles of water with sheer confidence and no resistence on the steering wheel

- Attracts lots of small stone chips on the tyre thread

- Increased my fuel consumption by at least 5%

Seriously, if I could make my choice again, I would go back to Michelin PS3, or at least Continental Conticontact 3. Yap Brothers has promo for Michelin PS3 for only $107 each, and ALTC for the Continentals for only $105.

The savings of $120 for 4 tyres is not worth it to go for the Kumho KU31. Trust me on this.

The width is the same... if you measure the left and right areas of the thread, they're equal. It's just that because of that uneven wear on the left, it looks like the tyre is narrower than the rim (in which case the tyre wouldn't even fit). I hope that's what you mean by width?

Not sure about offset, but my upsize my wheels from 16" to 17", and the overall diameter was kept. Can't remember the specs of the previous 16" though. These are my 2nd set of tyres for this rim, and I got it changed in 2 different workshops. Surely both mechanics won't suggest wrong tyres for rims?

check the width and height of your tyre.

mine also got this problem previous but its was due to my suspension too low and with the wide tyre its just keep getting the rubs.........

normal wearing should not have this much differences.

The next time u drive home after changing tyres, before you turn the car off, full lock on both sides and check the tyres again. I also think the wear is due to the inside of the tyres rubbing against something. you saying you don't know about the offset of the rims also increases this possibility.

how many car owner knows their car rim off set? and I don't think as car owner we don't have to know the offset of the rim

Is the job of the car company / workshop that supply the right rim technical specification rim to you.

and from the picture of the tyre wearing pattern, I am quite sure is due to wear and tear if is used for more than 40,000 km

if 1 have to find the actual cause of this you have to prepare to pay for many bills and time to get it solve like

suspension system : shock absorber / spring

wrong rim spec , wrong tyre size /under pressure / may be poor tyre quality.

alignment is 1 of the area to look into too.

If a set of your tyres lasted you average of 40k to 50k without any handling problem like poor grip , noisey

just go to good shop replace them and drive off SIMPLE
