lol I think its 104, 174 at around 7pm not really that possible, even 104 also difficult there leh.....

I also think the same as you.......they are probably quoting the TP police when they used the sentence "at 104kmh in excess of 70kmh" but they forgot to put in the comma after 104kmh and the next person that reported it read it literally without the comma and then did his/her own paraphrasing to cite it as 174kmh.

in this case, the comma makes a whole world of difference in the meaning.

Terrible! Want to speed until in excess of, beyond limit of, above limit of, XXspeed limit on that road, go race track..... there no limit, until u or car give up.

Safe ride, dun drink drive and remember got comma or not, kena caught, becomes full stop.

Cheers

Oh yes you can... if you kill someone at 104km/h -_-

road limit 70.

so assuming he didnt kill someone, his 104 is only 34 above the limit which does not even warrant a court case.

he kills someone and suddenly it becomes so much?

cannot be leh

If didn't kill anyone than that's different lah. 34 over limit is only a fine with 8 demerit points. Court case is only when speed is over 41.

But he was involved in a fatal accident so that's a whole different story altogether.

If you kill someone due to speed and reckless driving sure will become this much, think got witness say he drive like fook when TP take statement.

I mean whether it's 174 or 104, how do they ascertain the speed?

Speed = Distance / Time

Distance is total distance travelled from point A to point B.

Time is the total time taken to cover from point A to point B.

Poor command of language skill by ST journalist. I thought my English wasn't fanastic, but this is rather bad, hence understandably the confusion by many people.

"He was driving at 104km/h in excess of the 70km/h speed limit".

What this poorly constructed sentence indicated is that, the car was travelling at 104km/h, which is exeeding the speed limit of 70km/h. But given that the article title indicated 174km/h, he probably meant that the car exceed the speed limit by 104km/h.

The word 'at' is use to describe an actual term, & not usually for comparsion. Some examples, He arrived at 7pm. He was at the Pump station. He was traveling at 100km/h.

For comparion, here are some examples. He came 2 hours late. He was traveling 20km/h over the speed limit of 50km/h. He exceed the speed limit by 20km/h.

If he mean his speed was 174 Km/h, he could have wrote something like, "He was traveling at 174km/h, which is 104km/h over the speed limit of 70km/h." Or not as clear, but one should not be confuse if he knows English, 'He exceed the speed limit of 70km/h, by 104km/h'
