WASHINGTON (AP) — Opening a new military front in the Middle East, President Barack Obama authorized U.S. airstrikes inside Syria for the first time Wednesday night, along with expanded strikes in Iraq as part of "a steady, relentless effort" to root out Islamic State extremists and their spreading reign of terror.

 

"We will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are," Obama declared in a prime-time address to the nation from the White House. "This is a core principle of my presidency: If you threaten America, you will find no safe haven."

 

Obama announced that he was dispatching nearly 500 more U.S. troops to Iraq to assist that country's besieged security forces, bringing the total number of American forces sent there this summer to more than 1,500. He also urged Congress anew to authorize a program to train and arm Syrian rebels who are fighting both the Islamic State militants and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

 

Obama's plans amounted to a striking shift for a president who rose to political prominence in part because of his early opposition to the Iraq war. While in office, he has steadfastly sought to wind down American military campaigns in the Middle East and avoid new wars — particularly in Syria, a country where the chaos of an intractable civil war has given the Islamic State space to thrive and move freely across the border with Iraq.

Isis have released a video purporting to show the execution of British aid worker David Haines.

 

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "This is a despicable and appalling murder of an innocent aid worker. It is an act of pure evil.

"My heart goes out to the family of David Haines who have shown extraordinary courage and fortitude throughout this ordeal. We will do everything in our power to hunt down these murderers and ensure they face justice, however long it takes."

1) They dont keep prisoners, all POW are killed. That explains why iraqi soldiers drop their weapon upon hearing THEY are coming.....who wont!!!!

 

2) Non-Muslims whom stay behind are given 3 options :

a) Convert to Islam

Yes missile drops and killed innocents, but those firing the missiles are using them against the enemies. The intention is different even though the outcome is unforgivable. The firer did not aim at the children, wedding, etc. They happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and paid dearly with their lives.

They make use of UN schools as staging ground for their rockets, knowing fully well that Israel missiles will target them and therefore, cause civilians sheltering there as collateral. Then they use those as their propaganda.

Yahoo news: Australia foils Islamic State 'demonstration killings' plot

 

Australia's largest ever counter-terrorism raids on Thursday detained 15 people and foiled an alleged plot by Islamic State jihadists to conduct "demonstration killings", including beheading a random member of the public.

 

A major pre-dawn operation was carried out across Sydney and Brisbane by more than 800 officers acting on some 25 search warrants. One person has so far been charged with serious terrorism-related offences.

 

At least one gun was seized, along with a sword.

 

Omarjan Azari, 22, appeared in a Sydney court and was remanded in custody, charged with planning a terrorist act which prosecutors alleged was designed to "shock, horrify and terrify" the community.

 

The court heard he was instructed in a recent phone call by the most senior Australian member of Islamic State, Afghan-born Mohammad Baryalei, to commit the atrocity.

 

Prosecutor Michael Allnutt alleged the plan involved the "random selection of persons to rather gruesomely execute" on camera and involved "an unusual level of fanaticism".

 

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said the video was then to be sent back to IS's media unit in the Middle East, where it would be released to the public.

 

The jihadists have in recent weeks broadcast video footage of three foreign nationals being beheaded in Syria.

 

The raids, which spanned multiple suburbs, came barely a week after Australia boosted the terror threat level to "high" for the first time in a decade on growing concern about militants returning from fighting in Iraq and Syria.

 

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he had been briefed on intelligence that public beheadings had been ordered by IS militants.

 

"That's the intelligence we received," he said, prompting comparisons to the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby, who was hacked to death in a random attack on a street in England last year by two Muslim converts.

 

"The exhortations, quite direct exhortations, were coming from an Australian who is apparently quite senior in ISIL to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country," added the prime minister.

 

"So this is not just suspicion, this is intent and that's why the police and security agencies decided to act in the way they have."
