Boon Lay Raja Restaurant may close next year

The owners are retiring, and are seeking a reserve price of S$15 million for the 11,248 square foot space at Jurong Gateway Road.

SINGAPORE: The Boon Lay Raja Restaurant, a popular Chinese dining establishment that has been operating for more than 20 years, will close next year if a buyer for its Jurong premises is found.

Marketing agency Savills Singapore, which is managing the sale of the 11,248 square foot space at Jurong Gateway Road, said the vendors "would have preferred to continue operating if not for their impending retirement".

"This is a rare opportunity for restaurateurs facing escalating rentals to operate on their own premise, and establish or consolidate their presence in this highly sought-after location," Savills said in a media statement on Wednesday (Oct 8).

Boon Lay Raja Restaurant is located about 200 metres from Jurong East MRT station and bus interchange, and is near the Jurong Regional Library and JCube shopping mall.

Savills said the vendors are looking at a reserve price of S$15 million, or S$1,334 per square foot, for the restaurant space, which has a remaining lease of 69 years.

The tender closes on Nov 6 at 3pm.

Had eaten in the restaurant a few times, though the last was like 4-5 years ago.

Used to order their set ala-carte lunch, and we thought they were quite reasonable and nice. Also had a few time tried their dinner (typical 8 course type), and again thought they were good. Certainly value for money, and the decor was like typical chinese restaurant, a bit obiang.

In the past, we have Sin Liang, Phoenix, and the likes, all gone liao.

Now you if want to reminisce the old time restaurants, you can try 5-Star and Yan Palace. There are still a handful of those traditional ones - maybe you can try before they are gone for good.

There is also Lai Wah at Bendemeer. http://laiwahrestaurant.com/Menu10.htm

The most expensive set is $498 for 10 pax, makes me wonder how modern wedding dinner goes over $1k per table. I believe if I book every single table in the restaurant, they will give me a considerable discount or throw in some freebies.

Then there are those restaurants in shopping centres where u spend $50-60 dollars for 2 eating bean sprouts, pork ribs and chickens.

Thought there is another branch at Boon Lay itself, that is still operating?

Anyway, my impression of the one in Jurong East is that business is still good, so likely the owner really want to retire and surprises me that no offspring want to take over?
