Recommendation for Spectacles

From my understanding at KS, the optometrists there only measure your eye degree. They need to get a certificate or something.

Then the salesperson there will recommend you frames, lenses, etc to suit your face.

Yours seems very personalized. I don’t think KS can reach your standard...haha.

But they are patient and customer service are good. Price I find reasonable. Once my Oakley case was worn out and I went back there to find the lady who served me regularly, she gave me one free from their stockpile. People sell at Carousell for $10-20.

For those who frequent there, please correct me If I’m wrong.

Yes, the trade is regulated and you need a diploma these days.

It is the same set up at my regular shop just that the optometrist also helps to recommend me suitable frames. There are other sales staff that assist and they are also very experienced.

I need another vendor as current shop is going upmarket and increasingly expensive. I will try out KS next. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure what you mean by "personalised service".

KS will measure your eyes. Once done, will on pass you to a sales staff (all middle age and above ladies who have been there many years) to select frames. They will bring out suitable frames for you to try which I assume that they have already assessed your face shape. The frames they recommend are mainly the "in" ones unless you have special requests. But they will also give you practical advice eg if making progressive lenses, might be better to choose a larger lens (vs those sporty looking narrower shapes) to maximise the lens capability.

But ultimately, the frame choice is yours.

On collection date, they will fit you again and again until you are satisfied.

Oakley is good. Cheap, fairly light and grips really well. I still wear my one and only Oakley frame for my runs because it grips really well.

For those on Oakley frames, you can buy chiong rubber grips on various shopping platforms. Just know which frame model you are wearing. I bought a few. Fits very well. Trick is to apply soap to the frame legs before fitting the new grips.

I prefer titanium frames. 

This is my best spectacle buy ever. Its about 16 years old. MIJ rayban. I wear it daily at home or exercise since its not fashionable anymore or too small lens compared to more modern frames.  When I get home, I shower I change glasses to my home pair so I don't need to wash my newer pair again in mornings. 

Other than being bit dulled with age. There is no chip, no paint breakage. It's been hit by soccer balls. Went through NS with me again in 2006.

Ive changed lenses for it about 3-4 times. The various spectacle shop staff understand why I change lenses for it. 

So I would recommend MIJ frames haha. Think my current one also MIJ titanium. But nowadays frames are also fashion based, so these metal frames look very plain compared to the other frames.

i had this Titanium Rayban once, cost me $600+ (most expensive spec i ever owned) and it broke in less than a year

my last pair and current pair also MIJ titanium. Last pair 4 years old. Still swee swee. Ding dong got a bit of green which I am too lazy to clean out. A bit of cosmetic wear and tear but overall good. Wanted to fit new lens to it but as I don't have a replacement pair, I could not live "blind" for a week. 🤣 so no choice but buy a different frame.

Yes I think comparing to my then income then it was the most expensive pair of glasses I've owned.

Yup hence my spare pair which is this rayban. The other work spectacles I've had along the way, I junked in preference for this old warhorse.

Yes Oakley is good and cheap. 

I tried Tag Heuer before. Ex and doesn’t last. The frame broke in 1 year, never drop it or hit it. FUBAR and boycott!

Had 2 pairs of Tag before. 1st one (done at KS) was good. Lasted maybe 3 years before the rubber really gave way. Bad thing about  Tag is that the rubber can't be replaced, unlike Oakley. 2nd pair of Tag wore only 1 year as the prescription (done in Bras Brasah Complex as well but not KS) was not done well.

Oakley is like a cheaper plastic version of Tag titanium.

Yup, get the Jap made titanium frame if longevity is important. Most MIJ frames are designed for Asian face also. I wear Seiko titanium frame with real glass lens, after 10 years also no problem. Glass heavy right? I never have spectacle frame sliding down complaints at all on me. In fact, I appreciate the heaviness especially when in the open with strong winds.

Just came home from KS.

Served by a lady with multi-coloured hair. Son made a spare pair of glasses as insisted by his mom. $290 for his and mine with Hoya premium lenses, $900. 😢

I was asking for their cheapest on the Hoya range but they advised against it. 

Collection is one week from now. YAY!

AND they were quite curious how the coating on my Crizal deteriorated.

for son I just go own ownday make one for $138, add another pair spare at 50% of the price, total still below $290
