That's very clear and detail explanation. Better than those videos which speaks too fast to catch. You make it sound easy. However, I realise I am fixing the floating shelf behind a wall where there are a row of wall socket for the hall tv, so it might be a dangerous spot to drill, hence pass. Thanks mate.

Glad to help. You might find an empty part of the wall without wires. Just make sure there are no socket directly below. The socket can be beside the hole you want to drill. If I'm not wrong, the cables for hdb is usually straight down from the ceiling. If you are determine, u can try open up the socket faceplate and see where the cables are routed from the casing inside the wall. Please off the db first. Lol.

Hi guys. Bought this as per @Kb27 recommendation. Only comes with one screw bit.

Any recommended general purpose drill or screw bit set to recommend?

Bro

I have a tray full of Black and Deck Driller bits and the plugs, and I also bought this:

https://www.lazada.sg/products/makita-d20719-5pc-masonry-drill-bit-set-567810-mm-d20719-i562884358-s1603370005.html?spm=a2o42.searchlist.list.5.183d6166SIeO01&search=1&freeshipping=1

You'll need bits for masonry, wood and steel..

But I'm the kind of guy with the fancy drill and doesn't know how to use them haha..

For concrete only a rotary hammer drill works for me. Used those regular hammer drills before and I gave up.
5secs is all that is need to punch a 1.5in deep hole.

I recently bought some drill bits (2.5mm) from here. Cobalt bits I think. Used it yesterday on aluminium, it was real sharp and easy to penetrate the metal. My other bits are like junk now, have to press very hard and still can't cut through.

https://shopee.sg/☜❍twist-drill-M43-cobalt-drill-bit-Stainless-steel-special-punch-drill-metal-drill-iron-alloy-straight-shank-1-14mm-i.303834436.10809784780

For household uses, normally screw size are 3, 4, 5 mm. So you need to drill holes for them, just slightly smaller, like 2.5,  3.5,  4.5mm. So buy those kind of bit size.

Based on this principle,

These masonry drill bit sets start off too big? Starts from 5mm

The Ingco, starts from 4mm

If i am putting some screws to hang wall clocks.

It's ok to get these 5mm x 30mm anchors/plugs. Then i will need ? M5 screws?

Ok. i basically only need my drill so far to do few things.

i) Help remove and drive Allen key bolts/screws in faster for ikea furniture or whatever i get in future.

ii) I'm getting a wooden computer table and i want to install the concealment rack for the multiplug underneath.

iii) Drill some holes to mount wall clocks in all the rooms

Iv) Kiv kiv install some hook rack behind the doors. Or on the walls to hang bags etc.

Haha screw/allen bit set going with kb27's recommendation. So that's settled. So i need

a) A masonry bit set
b) appropriate screws and wall plugs/anchors
c) A woodworking bit set

Any recommendations with shopping links will be welcome! Thanks guys.

Just go to a hardware shop to buy all one shot. (I go to Toh Guan Enterprise Centre Ground Floor shop with the Milwaukee posters where professional contractors get their stuff. Not quite Bunnings but a lot more stuff than your typical hardware shops.)

Wah this home DIY stuff is actually quite complex lol.

Don’t think your drill has the impact function. So cannot drill concrete.
anyway for clocks and typical 1-2kg stuff 25mm depth is more than enough.
Unless you have the rotary drills too deep will take time.

For home usage, you can get by with M6 plugs. Very cheap at Horme. 100 pcs/box for $1.05 (only 1 cent each). https://www.horme.com.sg/product.aspx?id=1842

Then get some screws of various length there. 1-1/4" is most common for many (wood) jobs, but you need to measure/gauge the length of the screw needed. You may also need 1", 2" screws, again depending on the job.

Let's say you want to make a hole in the concrete wall to hang a clock. The clock is light, so you don't need heavy stuffs. Make a 6mm hole, then insert the M6 plugs. The hole depth must be slightly longer/deeper than the wall plug length, but not too deep until the whole plug sink into it. So if the plug is 3cm length, make roughly 3.5 to 4mm deep hole. The screw you need will be about 3 to 4 mm in diameter, and longer than 3cm. Giving the plastic plug 1mm of space on either side, that's roughly the diameter of the screw it takes. When you buy the box of M6 Fisher plugs, there's a label of instruction printed on the box. Try to follow it. I do not recommend other types of plugs due to bad experience, only the Fisher plugs. It's dirt cheap.

The screw must go in all the way down the Fisher plug to split it and wedge against the concrete, so it's tightened and will not move. Then the exposed length of the screw should be long enough to hold the clock or whatever job. That's why you need to gauge the length of the screws needed.

So really all you need is only a M6 masonry bit, the M6 Fisher plugs and the correct screws (diameter/length).

For bigger jobs like hanging a TV wall mount, then you need to go higher like M10 plugs/bits and the correct screws.

You'll learn little by little, don't worry. 😀

Oh, and for drilling into hdb concrete walls, you may need a rotary hammer drill.

Screw size is another complicated subject. Some people use numbers like #6, #8..etc. It refers to American size gauge. Roughly I'll half the number to get the diameter in mm. or you can use a conversion chart.

And never buy slotted head screws, they should be thrown away and banned. It's dangerous, bcuz the driver can slip easily out of the slot while you're driving and you may hurt yourself. Min. is the phillips screw head. Better head types are Robertson or Square, or Torx, but these screws are slightly more expensive and less readily available.

If you just want to hang a lightweight clock, you can also forget about drilling into concrete walls, rotary hammer and all that.

Just find a smooth wall or tile and stick this:

Clock face is glass and not tempered. I prefer to have screws.

Anyway all this will destroy the paint for painted walls. Even a 3m command strip may take away paint. At least a small screw hole is more suitable and quite universal for mounting like clock or painting.

Toilet those racks/hooks etc. I'm using those adhesive things cos the objects are not glass.

Anyway just treat it like learning some simple DIY. Actually I can call my id to do it for me like my current place.

For a light clock, I would just hammer in a concrete nail.....

Bro just sharing

I used those stick on types and the layer of paint gave way and the clock I liked a lot fell.. so I support using screws 👌

more effort and hassle but if it matters as the army says: always ensure ..
