RIP Inuka!

Heard on radio that Inuka has arthritis, ear infection, teeth problems, and some body ulcers. Has been inactive. Certainly for humans would not be put down. But for zoo their priority is to house and feed healthy the healthy ones. The cost of caring for a huge 530kg bear is difficult to bear long term.

i am pretty sure it is not a cost issue.

he has ulcers on his paws which means he can't place load on his legs, making him immobile, exacerbated by arthritis. the ulcers will prob require daily cleaning and this is something you cannot do to a large predator like a polar bear. it will not sit down there quietly and let you clean its wounds. you need to anesthetize it, which is a very big risk for all elderly animals and humans. Can you imagine doing this daily?

without daily treatment, the ulcers will never recover and he will continue to be immobile, bringing about a host of other issues. teeth and gum infections impact the heart negatively (that's why we need to keep our mouth clean). Add on his advanced age and it is all bad things coming together, leading to his QOL declining rapidly. I think the zoo had thought long and hard about his QOL. And i support their decision.

It is very hard for the zoo keepers, esp those who have been caring for it. can you imagine yourself taking care of it daily, interacting with it, and it amusing you with their silly antics? daily. these animals are like their other family member. perhaps occupying a larger piece of their heart than their human family. i don't think the decision to let him go is an easy one but i am sure the keepers' opinions were sought and weighed.

many years ago in the SG zoo, a senior zoo keeper was gorged by a bull elephant which suddenly went xiao. the keeper had been taking care of the elephant for many many years. he never blamed the elephant for the incident. there was real strong attachment. this is something these keepers share with the animals under their care.

I would like to challenge those who want to keep animals in zoo for whatever reasons (education or entertainment), volunteer yourself (your children) as an exhibit and stay in a zoo cage for 12 months (it is relatively short compare to animals who spent their whole lives in a cage). If you can endure the challenge, then we keep the zoos.

There is a reason why God (if you believe in God) made birds with wings (exclude ku ku bird) so that they are free to soar the skies and not keep in a nano-flat for their entire lifetime.

If rescued pet or unintentional domesticate, then the humane thing is not to set them free because they do not know how to survive in the wild.

I second Watwheels view that we need to make fair comparison and understand that in nature, there is a hierarchy and humans happened to be on top of the chain.

If the argument is for those pro-zoo folks to volunteer their own children as an exhibit, can I then counter their offer, since they believe in the wild, can the anti-zoo folks volunteer their own children to be put out in the wild and enjoy the "freedom"? I'll offer the naysayers 6 months, even shorter than 12 months. Then we set every animal in worldwide zoo free.

There are more than one instance where people take things to the extreme and literally treat animals as humans. Why do you think the Judge eventually feels a monkey does not own any copyright in legal sense? Even for my dogs, I can tell my friends I love my dog like a son but that's figuratively speaking. Do you really expect me to lay out fork and spoon for my dog at the dining table?

Being out in the wild is not all that good - even more so for an animal bred in the zoo entirely. Compared to the starving wild polar bear a photographer came across in the wild but yet cannot intervene, Inuka had been very well taken care of. Inuka had access to a full suite of veterinary service for a polar bear that was born in captivity. Closer to Singapore, why are certain orangutans being rehabilitated to be released in the wild and some not? Even as we speak, PETA killed more animals than it claimed to save.

Let's not be another PETA here...

if inuka can chose to be born in the wild , go hungry, die early

vs born inside 4 walls, live longer, stomach forever full.

i really dun know which 1 will he chose.

How FD contradicting himself and got fired up?

He said putting Inuka to sleep is the right decision. Then a lady called in and say should let Inuka die naturally like what she does with her cat. Then FD say thats what he did for his rabbits, died naturally in his arms on their last breathe.

Then the quarrel between FD and the caller begin. The caller question FD why his rabbits can die naturally but why he agree to put Inuka to sleep. Ding dong ding dong and Glenn stepped in to say FD is contradicting himself.

Then they picked up another caller who was a former zookeeper and works in SPCA also. This one also got all riled up and say animals cant speak for themselves and we should end their misery.

Got pretty intensed. They cut to music and commercial to cool everyone down. Then i reached my workplace. Didnt listen if they continued with the argument.

Actually few animals die naturally in the wild ... as they grow old, sick and weak, they die a sometimes quick or sometimes slow death due to predators. So no one is correct!

At least can survive till old age without piak piak. He's the man.
