RIP Inuka!

When I visited the zoo a few years ago, he was already in quite a bad state.

Shades of green on his coat of fur. The lower part of the body has turned grey. And he looks rather tired.

 

Guess it's the best path for him and not let him continue suffering.

 

RIP.

 

Poor thing. Never come out of the four walls since born. Live in such a small pigeon hole for his whole life. I wonder, has he been really happy in life before...

Dont know if he is really happy for the past 27 years here. Esp when he is alone most of the time when his family members had passed away. Actually quite happy for him that he has ended all this and reunited with his family members in other world.

I think for some of us born in 1970s.... looking at Inuka the first time in the zoo back then was like staring at the B747 Megatop at Changi with our jaws wide open.

27 years and no piak piak.........some guys here will go crazy and some most probably feels like dying.......haiz! Watching those picture sure brings back a lot of memories.......the polar bear area is always a stopover and a place to rest our tired legs. Goodbye Inuka.......

I would like to challenge those who want to keep animals in zoo for whatever reasons (education or entertainment), volunteer yourself (your children) as an exhibit and stay in a zoo cage for 12 months (it is relatively short compare to animals who spent their whole lives in a cage). If you can endure the challenge, then we keep the zoos.

 

 

There is a reason why God (if you believe in God) made birds with wings (exclude ku ku bird) so that they are free to soar the skies and not keep in a nano-flat for their entire lifetime.

 

If rescued pet or unintentional domesticate, then the humane thing is not to set them free because they do not know how to survive in the wild.

 

Maybe can interview those guys who are on long prison sentences.

Inuka was born to Sheba and Nanook in December 1990. He made his first public appearance when he was only three month old

Nanook and Sheba came from the Winnipeg Zoo in Canada, and Cologne Zoo in Germany respectively.

The Singapore Zoo successfully set up an extensive breeding programme, leading to Inuka’s birth.

Aside from Inuka, Sheba, and Nanook, Singapore had a fourth polar bear called Anana.

She was caught from the Canadian wild and brought to the zoo in 1979.

After the birth of the polar bear cub, it was given the name Inuka which was chosen from a nation-wide naming contest. Inuka means “silent stalker” in Inuit.

Inuka loved frolicking in the water with his mother Sheba.

Sheba, Nanook, and Anana died in 2012, 1995, and 1999 respectively, leaving Inuka as the only polar bear left at the Singapore Zoo.

 

 

Too bad the breeding programme didn't bore more polar bear cubs. Else Inuka wouldn't be so lonely after its parents died.

This is not a good example of apple to apple comparison. Mankind aren't wild animals which cannot differentiate right or wrong, moral or not. That's why if they have to live amongst us they will have to live in an enclosure, under our conditions. If the bears are hungry do they know how to use money and go to McDonalds? They can live in HDB flats right next to you and me if they can learn how. Right? Vice versa if you move into their environment you will have to fight for your own survival, hunt and kill to survive. Do they talk to you about what's inhumane and what's not. No. It's about animal instinct and survival of the fittest. See the stark difference?

 

Mother nature's of dealing with wild animals isn't perfect either. Wild animals grow old too, become immobile and get hunted & killed by other predators. Death actually come about much sooner for wild animals. It's kill or be killed, in our eyes it's a brutal environment. Is there anything humane about it. No. When the animals grow old and become immobile they cannot hunt hence they starve. The starvation can last for a long time until they get hunted down and killed. Humane or not you decide.

I think inukas demise affects me more than ah meng.

 

Why ah. Maybe polar bears are just so cute?

Cos Ah meng left a legacy of decendants.

 

But Inuka only left us with fond memories.

when i am very sick, immobile, with no cure in sight and no quality of life, i hope someone will ease my pain and let me go peacefully too.

 

that is a gift i can give my cats but not to myself. haizzz.

Heard on radio that Inuka has arthritis, ear infection, teeth problems, and some body ulcers. Has been inactive. Certainly for humans would not be put down. But for zoo their priority is to house and feed healthy the healthy ones. The cost of caring for a huge 530kg bear is difficult to bear long term.
