If you go in with open eyes it is good, meaning you know the potential risks you are exposing yourself to.

The sample data you use is too small.

Did you know that the maximum USEP price is cap at $4,500/MWh? Why does EMC/EMA had to cap it? Has it happened before?

Prices swing seldom due to outages of gas or oil supply; most of the cases had to do with plant breakdown and/or sudden swing in oil prices. If you have 1 unit down, the price jumped, the affected genco will ask for other gencos to help cover their contracts, and if oil price also chiong on the same day, good luck!

On the other hand, it may not happened as well, then perhaps you will enjoy slightly lower price than others.

I am aware of the risk. Having said that I can't help thinking the wide gap between USEP and standard tariff rates, it seem from mid 2012 onward, the gap widen. Not sure it is purposely widen to signal a opportunity for OEM vendors to come in. Anyway SP wholesale rate does not have any contract, anytime I can switch to another provider. With the COVID situation, low tariff rates should be here for some period of times, unless gov come in and increase indirect tax again.

The gap had attracted many independent retailers (retailer without generation business) into this space when the market was opened to lower end businesses and eventually households. You can check around, a few of those already closed due to the volatility of the market and then some are actually small players with other main businesses to fall back on (like certain cylinder gas vendor, etc). Then there are niche player selling green energy. I am not saying there is no business to be done in this space but it is tricky and volatile. It is common to have a team of traders on 24x7 standby watching the USEP price, active hedging the oil price, etc.

Risk $4,500 to get many 2 cent savings?

Kenna once the $4,500 and all the 2 cent savings gone.

This one is for big time gamblers.

High risk low returns

By the way no one expected Texas to kenna US$9,000 power bills.

So can also say no one expects $4,500/MWh.

I got interested and ask Google for help.

Only managed to find old reports. One of which said:

On 26 November 2012, there were nine periods during which the USEP rose above $3,000/MWh, with the USEP hitting the cap price of $4,500/MWh in one of these periods. An Emergency Operating State was declared, and shortfalls in energy, contingency reserve and regulation were observed.

The reason for the spike?

Due to a high level of planned maintenance (two CCGT units, one ST unit) and forced outages (one OCGT unit, one ST unit), a total of 1,413.5MW of generation capacity was taken off the grid. This led to the supply cushion dipping below 15 percent for 18 periods.

26 November 2012 was a Monday, which means there were units taken offline for maintenance over the weekend and could not be started plus other unit brokedown.

Quite sure there must be other incidents, my google skill not good enough.

Be it SPWS or OEM, anything is better than SP Tariff.

Don't be surprise, there are still quite a large number of people on old SP Tariff.

Capacity jumped from 2012/2013 onwards but it is tightening again. Real reserve margin is at around 40% now, a multi year low.

Last quarter, USEP prices jumped to above $1000 MWh once or twice. Usually it is at below $100.

For those interested, read the monthly report.

electricity retailers have increased tariffs from 17.68 to 17.98 (2 year plan) around 2 - 3 weeks ago.

I just re-contracted with Geneco 17.49 fixed for 2 years after seeing SP increasing the tariffs. Somehow the recontract offer (since Feb) remains the same.  Quickly grab!  (new offers are 18 cents plus!)
