From the day that we start to see them, they were really cute. But since then they are getting many and many. I have a friend whose pond is actually being attacked. You see it, you will hate it. Don't talk about my friend's fishes being attacked and the pain to clear up. It costed my friends thousands of dollars over those lost fishes. 

Now you read all the news, my god, they are everywhere including on the CDB roads. Don't you find them a nuisance now? 

Good question. But I have less chances to meet them. Good luck to anyone who meet them and get into troubles being attacked.

They are already having cases of attacking people. No need to talk about snatching food. 

Somehow, I wonder if they contribute to improving the environment or not. If not, why need them around. Do they control fish population? Do they build dams to do whatever is good for the ecosystems? I just don't know why they are needed here

If your friend still has the intentions to keep fishes, better invest in a robust net over his pond to protect against future intrusions. I guess the hatred against the otters are coming from the landed owners with private ponds, and understandably so given the $$$ destroyed by the otters.

i think they contribute to allow our government to tell the whole world that we have very healthy wild life in this city country , other than that, i really don't know why their population are not controlled.

Like I mention, we have no clear advantage of keeping these otters. Be it high SES or low SES. If you are the one being attacked, how will you feel?

Somehow, they have to be controlled at a level. Jokes aside that I wanna run them down. I just think they should be minimized at least to a level they they a not a manace

but they help improve our economy. eat kois worth tens of thousands of money. owner had to spend more to buy new ones. 🤣

sadly i do not think our gahman will do anything drastic. Firstly the species found in sg are endangered, secondly we are featured in many well known documentaries about our free roaming otters.

If my koi are being massacred, no choice LL buy new ones. Take it as a write-off lor. Unless home insurance can cover the losses? 😁

Your govt treat them as national mascots, to the extent that they are swimming around on your Trace Together app. Cull or control them? I think it's very unlikely.

No offence, but I think perspectives may be quite different if you are personally the one suffering from their attacks. Well, I am not a victim, and neither do i personally keep koi. But the earlier jalan kayu case, and others before that, resonated with me and triggered me, because a man's home is his castle, an uninvited intruder into your castle wantonly destroying what is yours and what you cherish, would anyone not be rightfully outraged under such circumstances? And be entitled to repel such predation?

I suppose some of these perspectives articulated are because some ppl will think these are 'just fish' lah. Just buy replacements lah, its just money. Its not like your dog or cat. Well, I suppose some owners who nvested feelings into their fishes may beg to differ, especially if the fish have been with the family for decades. 

I am just flabbergasted at the views of some, that implied that it is the homeowner's fault, for encroaching into the otters' habitat, for not erecting nets in their homes to defend against these intruders.... seriously???

You should have seen the comments earlier, asking for the otters to be machine gunned and driven over on purpose 😁 

The onus of responsibility is still on the owners to protect their own property, and I'm just stating the fact that asking or hoping for the NEA to come in and cull them is fat hope. If you are talking about the fishes being the owner's pride and joy, as well as investing in the care, feelings and $$$ in them over the years, all the more the homeowners' should safeguard them to protect the ponds and their fishes inside it, knowing that there are now otters roaming around. 

You mean your leave your gates open, and the robbers come into your home for a ransack, then you blame why the police are not doing their job when you did not jolly well lock up at the first place? 

In New Zealand, people install fences and rear sheep dogs to safeguard their sheep for a reason. They don't leave the sheep unguarded and then start crying foul when the sheep got preyed on by other wildlife. Sheesh, maybe its this sense of entitlement which have been too engrained for some Singaporeans. My property got destroyed, its 100% the marauders fault when I am not doing shit to safeguard my treasured property.

Yeah, I actually agree with you. Which is why we ought to decriminalise home owners' actions in repelling these pests. Today, you can't touch them because of their protected status. No natural predators, they now are too comfortable in urban settings, no fear of humans, do as they please, but you will get into trouble with the law if you touch them even when protecting your property.
