I think the problem is deeper.

If they have a separate category for PHVs, it means there has to be a quota or a cap to this category. Because in the grand scheme of things, total vehicle population has to be kept to zero growth. So this automatically means PHV COE category will have to be limited in quota, since now they can't bid for Cat A, B or Open Cat.

Limiting PHV COE category also means PHV companies cannot suka suka expand fleet and gain market share. This would also equate to less PHV drivers being needed, leading to unemployment. How is the government going to create proper employment for these PHV drivers doing it full-time? Now catch 22 situation. PAP had their balls held ransom by the gig economy. So just act blur let PHV companies have unbridled bidding power in Cat A, B and Open Cat lah, rather than to deal with the problem of unemployment.

They're playing the long game.

Essentially, they still wanna discourage driving. But if you still die die want to or have to drive, they rather you make yourself useful and perform a service (fetching passengers) rather than drive around alone.

The thing is, having 78,000 PHVs roaming and plying the roads now as we speak isn't helping the congested situation. And the PHVs population is still expected to increase and will continue to compete from the same COE pool, while increasing congestion at the same time.

When you stop at a traffic light, just look around your car and count the number of vehicles with blue PHV sticker. Based on this random sampling, out of 5 vehicles I always counted as least 2 are PHVs. It's crazy.

I tried grab hitching for fun. Not bad ah, even if passenger cancels can get $4. Also picked up a lady who made me so shy I couldn’t speak at all! Earned about $40 in 1 week or so.

But if new car maybe won’t do it for the time being.

Ya, according to my friend, no need to put PHV sticker to drive and only need to do grabhitch, the earning also not bad.

Some people don’t mind to do grab hitch even their car is new car. Before covid when i took some grab hitch, some of the cars that i rode was new car.

Private car population (non-PHV) is about 500k. If Govt can remove a significant chunk of that, and keep say 100k PHV, I think they would consider that a win.

Grabhitch earning per trip is low, probably enough to cover petrol plus plus. Good for  by the way and on the way type of trip.

I think increase liao, i heard somone commenting up to  as much as $20 for a trip from hougang to jurong. Or i might be wrong ?

If really $20 and you can hitch 2 persons everyday, quite a good deal, can help pay installment.

For 4 long trips, fare minus commission is btw $50 and $55.

If you want to go so deep, let's go back to the "open leg" policy implemented by pappy with regards to "foreign talents".

Does CECA ring a bell to you?
