https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/article/3275834/hong-kong-leader-john-lee-defends-controversial-sex-education-advice-schoolchildren

Hong Kong’s leader and the education chief on Sunday defended the government’s sex education programme for schools, which asked pupils to avoid premarital sex and curb sexual urges by playing badminton, and insisted it was a valid way to “protect the juniors”. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and Christine Choi Yuk-lin, the Secretary for Education, weighed into the controversy after teaching materials for the citizenship, economics, and society curriculum for Form One to Three pupils was criticised for being “out of touch” and “unrealistic”.

Some of the suggestions made included avoiding premarital sex if young couples could not cope with the consequences of pregnancy, setting limits on intimacy early in a relationship and developing “self-discipline, self-control, and resistance to pornography”. An example provided for the “avoid and divert” approach to sexual desire was “go out to play badminton together in a sports hall” when a boy had a physiological reaction when left alone with his girlfriend.

Badminton is totally wrong. Should say use rubber. ie bubble gum. Chew bubble gum to get it over....

The absurd section.... facepalm...

Quoted from scmp.

The bureau also underscores the importance for young people to set limits on intimacy early in a relationship. Pupils in one suggested activity are asked to fill in and sign a “commitment form” to set limits on intimacy. They are asked to pledge that they would control their sexual impulses in certain ways and promise they would develop “self-discipline, self-control, and resistance to pornography”

.............In one scenario where a young couple saw another pair engaging in intimate behaviour in the bushes in a park at night, it is suggested they avoid temptation by “leaving the scene immediately” or diverting themselves by “enjoying the sight of flowers and trees in the park”.

.........In another scenario where a boy got a physiological reaction while studying at home alone with his girlfriend, the similar advice is to leave the scene immediately or “go out to play badminton together in a sports hall”. The suggestion sparked online mockery, with internet users suggesting an invitation to play badminton should become the Hong Kong version of “Netflix and chill,” a euphemism for sexual activity.

Singapore also preach the same in school...

But I guess its a dilemma to portray a holier than thou front then the preacher to do otherwise that is just human...

Finding the middle ground is difficult.

I wouldn't want organisations to woke my kids before they are mentally matured, but should they ask my kids to use protection in their pre-teens?

After all, the family should be first responsible, and thereafter the grown-up kid to the family.

In the first place, schools no need to keh kiang touch on this topic. Because there are no right answers.

Go for holier than thou attitude, will get slammed by liberals for being unrealistic, like this HK case. Go for the realistic liberal line, will get slammed by the traditionalist old fogeys.

Just leave it to the upbringing and then can blame the upbringing! [laugh]

Agree with the principle, however as usual, the challenge is in the implementation

In Asian societies, and Singapore's 4 major races are all considered asian including Eurasians are even more traditional due to the closely knitted familial bonds, it is accepted that schools have the imperative to inculcate morality, according to school motto, school values etc.

Values are also changing, as the society intermingles, and needs climb the hierarchy.

Regardless, family whom faces the consequence of a child brought up negatively, should hold the key responsibility.

The HK administration seems green to have their governor equivalent wade into this, though I don't consider it a step backward. Its just another bucket of brackish water to pour on the "communist" associated government
