ConnorMcLeod 2nd Gear May 15 Share May 15 Hi @13177 , heart -> MG S5, for family -> Aion V or Y Plus (Euro NCAP data for Y Plus so I am a bit uncomfortable with it). Aion Y Plus exterior design a bit 'ugly'. If choose between Aion V and Y Plus, i would go for Aion V for the 'better' looking design. But for handling/driving feel, i would choose Aion Y Plus. MGS5 is depends if you are ok with the brand and the not so many features that the car has. If you like your car with many nice/high tech features, MGS5 might not be an attractive option. This is why most people would go for BYD or Tesla. Or even Xpeng or Zeekr. I have 3 people i know, recently when they buy EV, none of them consider MG, not even go see and test drive. All ended up with BYD/Tesla. 😂 2
samwongothers Clutched May 15 Share May 15 (edited) @ConnorMcLeod the test drive of the MG S5 and Aion V are crucial for you then, to see if following your heart or your mind is the final choice. Take note to try out the one pedal drive of the S5, which i personally find it useful to not keep having to press the brake when stopping (Aion V lacks this feature). Bro, after reading, I really appreciate you having so much thoughts in this purchase. I figure that you are very concerned with your elderly parents getting in/out of the vehicle. I am driving the SL7, and have also tested many EVs. Personally, I think the Y plus may be the best bet for you. The Y plus to me is more of a mini MPV than a SUV, and it is a fantastic family vehicle with lots of space and ease of getting in and out , and It is also more pocket friendly than the rest. Of course feature wise, it is not the most comprehensive, but it gets the job done. If SUV is what your heart beats, I think Aion V premium is the choice. Some things are good to have, but you might just use it once and never again. The drive only feel different when you are comparing, after a few days on the road, you won't even remember the difference. If you want that loot and go feeling, all EVs can give you that feel, just step hard with your right foot, and if standard is not enough, put to sports, and you will almost always be first off the lights and far far ahead.

True la, even the car comes with tons of features but you might not use them at all or only once a blue moon. Lol. Aion Y plus indeed quite a good car. Interior is spacious, getting in and out of the car is easy, drive is not bad and the price is cheaper than the rest. But the exterior design not say nice looking.

ConnorMcLeod 2nd Gear May 16 Share May 16 @13177, @Tianmo I appreciate very much the constructive inputs and sharing of experience from everyone here to help me clarify and consolidate my thoughts . I need a car to go from A to B and can go very basic with the car features. Most important to me are strong air con 😆 and active/passive safety features, because I just hop in the car and drive off every time. I doubt I will spend time to fiddle with the mood light, neither memory seat since I am the only driver, or rain sensing wipers etc coz I can from manual transmission era. Wifey today brought up the idea of 2nd hand car coz she felt a new car is too costly and we will use the car less and less over time in the 10 years ahead (we are in our late 50s now). now starting a parallel search of 2nd hand cars like Sienta and Freed 🙂 . gut feeling is renew coe is better than get a 2nd hand car coz they won't have lower depreciation than renew coe, and I know the history of my own car but with 2nd hand car I got chance to get something that suits my parents. Displayed range 560km city range instead of the official WLTP range that encompasses more driving scenarios. And displayed the boot space volume when in fact that figure is storage space with rear seats folded. Walao. ALL the manufacturers do that. The main headlines always show, price of the Cat A, range of the bigger battery Cat B single motor, 0-100 of the AWD (coughbydsealion7cough)

LOL! 😁 Yes I did.. Yes, the MG5 is an ICE vehicle and yes, it's the same type that got zero starts in the crash test carried out by ANCAP as mentioned by @kayabread82 on page 8 of this thread. Also the MG5 that caught on fire in China is surprisingly young at around two years old. While the source of fire is under investigation, SCDF mentions that the primary cause of vehicle fires are due to ignition sources such as overheating and electrical faults within the engine compartment. Speaking for vehicle fires, over here in Singapore SCDF has published their statistics for 2025 here: https://www.scdf.gov.sg/docs/default-source/media-room-(publications)/annual-statistics/scdf-annual-statistics-on-ems-fire-enforcement-2025.pdf. Happy to note that BEV fires for all of 2025 came to just four while ICE fires are much more at 222 rides, with a total of 226 vehicles that caught on fire last year. Taking into account the population of ICE vs BEV rides in 2025, one is over 4x safer in an BEV than an ICE ride in terms of fire risk. As stated by SCDF in their 2025 report, fires involving EVs remained low, see page 7 of 14 in the above link. According to SCDF, the primary cause of BEV fires are due to electrical faults involving the battery. Thus any new BEV must show compliance to the new standard of no fire, no smoke as specified in GB38031-2025. It's more important now than ever, as GB38031-2025 becomes mandatory on 1 July 2026 and all new China made BEVs models must comply. The vast majority of BEVs in Singapore come from China. Insist on getting confirmation that your next new BEV has this important certification.
