means no more electronic purchase from oversea goods portal likes Amazon, taobao, pinduoduo, aliexpress, etc.

If you are caught importing a non-compliant regulated good, you may be fined up to SGD 10,000 per import.

Very regressive policy, they should target the PMA, PMB, etc from non approved source, now blanket cover all folks from buying cheaper appliance from oversea online sources.

In the meantime Courts, Gain City, Havey, challenger, NTUC, giant, SS all huat big big. Privatizing Profits and Socializing Losses indeed!.

For consumers, it covers:

  • Air-conditioners (single/multi-split)
  • Refrigerators
  • Televisions
  • Clothes dryers

If consumer insist to import these items, go to NEA website to submit relevant information.

Once approved, can import lo.

PMD & PAB also requires Approved Permit from LTA before import.

Actually the safety mark and this new nonsense is more for protecting the big players.

The safety mark in Singapore has unique requirements. If your safety certificate is above 3 years, it can't be used to register. It's like saying your degree can only be used for three years. According to the international certificate authority, this is Singapore unique request likely found no where.

So if you are a small business, you want to register a safety mark. You need to destroy 3 samples and pay a fee, easily 5k to 10k per variation. That's just to get a certificate. Then need to pay registration and renewal fees.

Ppl thought that these certificates protect consumers, wrong.

It protects insurers.

It protects manufacturer, if explode they are no longer liable since they passed the labs. That's why some appliances these days are so shitty because the manufacturer will only build to meet the minimum requirement.

It protects big retailers, they can actually bypass, test and certify themselves. They have cost advantage because small players won't spend so many tens of thousands of dollars to certify.

Consumers are the biggest losers because you definitely pay more and offer less legal protection.

This new energy thing is just another layer to protect big players.

Juz dun ride around in a S Class or anything ostentatious like some bolehland politicians can liao. Maybe politicians using an EV as a daily ride would suffice as a good example

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are a category of nuclear fission reactors that are physically smaller, simpler, and more flexible than the massive, traditional nuclear power plants we’ve seen for decades.

Think of them as the "plug-and-play" version of nuclear energy. While a conventional reactor might produce $1,000$ to $1,600$ megawatts (MWe), an SMR typically produces up to 300 MWe per unit.

What Makes Them Different?

The "SMR" name actually breaks down its three defining features:

Small: They have a much smaller physical footprint. This allows them to be placed in locations that couldn't support a massive plant, such as remote mining sites or near smaller cities.

Modular: Components are factory-fabricated and then shipped to the site for assembly. This "assembly line" approach aims to reduce the massive budget overruns and decade-long construction timelines common in the industry.

Reactor: They still use nuclear fission to create heat, which turns a turbine to generate electricity—but often with advanced cooling systems.

Key Advantages

Enhanced Safety: Many SMR designs use passive safety systems. Instead of relying on pumps and electricity to cool the core during an emergency, they use natural forces like gravity or convection.

Lower Initial Cost: While they aren't "cheap," the upfront capital required is a fraction of a full-scale plant, making them more accessible for private utilities.

Grid Flexibility: Because they are smaller, they can be "stacked." A site might start with two modules and add four more as power demand grows. They are also better at ramping up or down to complement intermittent energy sources like wind and solar.

The "Catch" (Challenges)

Despite the hype, SMRs aren't a magic bullet just yet:

Economic Proof: Because they are newer, the "cost per kilowatt-hour" is currently higher than wind, solar, or even traditional gas until mass production scales up.

Waste Management: They still produce radioactive spent fuel, which requires long-term storage solutions that many countries are still debating.

Licensing: Regulators are used to the "big" plants; creating a fast-track approval process for these new, diverse designs is a slow, bureaucratic hurdle.

Current Status

As of 2026, several countries (including the U.S., China, Russia, and Canada) are in a race to deploy the first wave of commercial SMRs. Russia already has a floating SMR (the Akademik Lomonosov) providing power to remote Arctic regions.

Cannot lah, wait kena meltdown no escape. Better put it offshore on a floating platform or floating island. If meltdown can move it far far away into the sea or sink it.

The gahmen gonna do like last time no decoration lights for our buildings, no AC for schools, parliament, gahmen offices, all gahmen vehicles either small electric ones or 1.5 hybrids max?

And civil service staff cannot claim for private transport, taxi fares etc etc. Set good examples.

And stop digging and patching our roads over and over again too.

The use of aircon in school has been debated many times in the pariliament, and this is somewhat the in-between solution.

All S’pore schools to get more powerful fans for classrooms by 2027, cool paint for building facades (https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/politics/all-spore-schools-to-get-more-powerful-fans-for-classrooms-by-2027-cool-paint-for-building-facades)

I would say the digging and patching of our roads has been due to the poor infrastructure planning right from the start. Why have to lay pipes and cables under the road, instead of purpose built tranches? Leaving the pipes and cables underground also create problem for builder, when they need to pile / dig into the ground, as even drawings from the authorities may not have been updated.

In a nutshell, any person who want to import regulated goods (include online purchase) from 1 July 2026 must:

  • ensure that the appliance(s) met the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES)
  • register their appliances with NEA (registration fee will be waived for end users who import regulated goods for their own use)

I am with you. On the surface, the law place emphasis on energy usage but in reality, controlling of appliance for personal consumption will hardly moves the needle. I am more concern with the electrical and fire safety of such goods bought from overseas but there seems to be little laws to address them.

Having to go through the hassle of registering the goods, more may turns to retailers and the rest is you know I know (more sales & more profits = more tax revenue for IRAS).

Just turn off all the escalators in shopping centers and buildings during non peak hours and force everyone to use leg power.  Not sure how much it will save.

China domestic market appliances are already rated for energy consumption with this kind of label. not similar to what we have or the so called Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES).
Unless we are not really thinking about reducing energy consumption, and are just regulating for the sake of collecting more fees from importers and consumers.

Remind me of GST increase to help the poor and transform to expensive electronics to massively help the poor, and regress to all price increase is to help the poor gao gao, forever helping the poor.

Instead of working closely with e-commerce platforms to filter the listings, they aim the consumers.🤦‍♂️
