    Maid in Haven

3 weeks ago, I decided to let my maid go for her first 'off' day after 8 months working with me. Before this off day, it was mutually agreed that we compensate her for not taking off. This time round, I encouraged her to go 'see' the world by allowing off days. Was supposed to be back at 6 pm. It was 9 pm and no sign of her. I kind of thought she may have lost her way, so I troed calling her mobile but it was off. Then it struck me that she might have ran away. But.... all her belongings were not taken. Was told to wait 24 hours before lodging a Police report. Informed the agency and no advice given at all. Was speaking to some of my BFFs and they suggested me calling H.O.M.E. Didnt really know what it was so I gave it a try and called. Lo and behold, my maid had conveniently 'checked-in' herself! With that check-in, our friend had also drawn up a list of incredulous accusations! The lady at HOME sarcasticly said that SHE IS SAFE HERE. SHE HAVE THE RIGHT TO STAY HERE INDEFINTELY! I farked her up and asked them why did they not contact me as the employer upon check in as we were worried she got raped or killed somewhere etc. She gave some nonchalant reply as if she cant be bothered. I did some research and realised this is the same outfit run by some folk called Jolovan Wham that prevents injured foreign workers to be repatriated. I didn't know that they do maids too! What statutory right do they have to keep maids? Why was I not informed as the employer? Who funds them? What if, these maids, are 'chao geng'? Does that mean, they get a free holiday in a chalet doing nothing for an indefinite period of time? Is there a limit in the time they can stay there? MOM has contacted me regarding the accusations and I will be there on Friday to counter them. Anyone else has any of such experience? Can we repatriate the darn bitch after closure with MOM or MOM has the right to decide? Any input will be helpful. p.s. I do not need any flame wars. So keep the sarcasm and accusations to yourself. Thanks.

  3. taken from http://sgforums.com/forums/8/topics/420474 Nordian Cuaca is a 45 year old man who has been escaping Interpol and has been living in Singapore! How could this be? I always thought that the Singapore Government has been taking a tough stance against criminals! But it seems that Cuaca has been living in the Singaporean Haven for the past ten years! Apparently, he has been able to settle down here, setup a company, own two Sentosa Coves properties, starts a family and even owns a Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini in Singapore! I always believe that the Singapore Government has strict immigration laws to prevent criminal from entering, let alone settling down here. How was it possible that he could slip past detection then? In this age of Terrorism, could this mean that Terrorists could also possibly slip past detection and conduct their activities here? As a citizen, I am worried if not terrified at this lapse of national security. But for one thing I

  5. They showed support of their friends back home. Those back home in KL risked injuries / arrests to voice their protest yesterday. Those who live in SGP gathered at Hong Lim Park to show support for the same cause. What have 'the leaders' done to the locals here who dont care about similar issues, but only worry about whether they can upgrade their flats, whether their children get a place in 'good schools' (these are legitimate pursuits but life is more than that). Shame..... the 'rules' here make such support unlikely to happen, it just shows how freedom is 'designed' here in an unique way.

  7. Businesses at Newton, Orchard Road area affected due to flash floods By Dylan Loh | Posted: 17 July 2010 1934 hrs Photos 1 of 1 SINGAPORE: It looks like money down the drain again for retailers at Lucky Plaza. About a month after the massive Orchard Road flood, the watery mess returns. One owner of a shop at Lucky Plaza is a victim of yet another flood. The owner is not happy because renovations were recently completed and as a result of this, business has to stop. Christina Lim, shop owner, Singapore Gift Centre, said: "This is very bad. I feel that the management should do something about it because this is not the first time. It happens almost every year." It's a similar story nearby at Liat Towers. Ng Thian Chin said: "When I came here in the morning at about 6am, the water level was very high.
  8. Iceland raises interest rate to 15 percent Bloomberg News Tuesday, March 25, 2008 COPENHAGEN: The Icelandic central bank raised its key interest rate by a record 1.25 percentage points at an emergency meeting Tuesday to halt a slump in the krona and a surge in inflation. The currency made its biggest ever jump against the euro. Sedlabanki said it raised the benchmark rate to 15 percent. It had not planned to hold a rate meeting until April 10. It was "crucial" to reverse the krona's decline "as quickly as possible," the bank said in a statement on its Web site. The krona has tumbled 17 percent against the euro in the past three weeks on concern that the global financial turmoil would make it harder for Iceland to finance one of the world's largest current account deficits. The country risks "spiraling" wages and inflation if that decline is not pared, the central bank said. Inflation reached an annual rate of 6.8 percent last month. "They were losing the battle with inflation," said Ludvik Eliasson, an economist at the country's second-largest lender, Landsbanki Islands. "Inflation expectations were rising significantly over the past few weeks on the decline of the krona. They had to do something convincing." The krona gained as much as 5.3 percent against the euro after the surprise announcement and jumped as much as 6.3 percent against the dollar. Inflation has exceeded the central bank's 2.5 percent target every month since April 2004, while the current account shortfall stood at 15.6 percent of the economy last year, according to data from the national statistics office and the central bank. Inflation probably quickened to 8.4 percent this month, according to the median estimate of five economists surveyed by Bloomberg. This year's slump in the krona represents the second time investors have shunned the currency since 2006. The krona lost 20 percent against the euro that year, sparked by concern the current account gap was unsustainable. The currency recovered in 2007 as inflation slowed and the current account deficit narrowed. This year's global financial turmoil has once again undermined confidence in the currency.
