  1. SINGAPORE - A self-employed man was sentenced to three weeks in jail on Monday for slapping teenage blogger Amos Yee outside the State Courts last month. Neo Gim Huah, 49, was charged in court on Monday. He was not represented and gave a long mitigation plea in Chinese, explaining why he did it. He told the court earlier he wanted to teach Yee a lesson. Neo, who runs his own air-conditioning and electrical engineering business, said he had taken offence at portions of the video posted online by Yee which he found disrespectful to Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. He closely monitored the case and intended to confront and slap the blogger before his first two court appearances as he felt that the teenager's actions had portrayed Singapore in a negative light. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Winston Man said Neo initially restrained himself and did not confront Yee until his third court appearance on April 30 when he realised the teenager had flouted his bail conditions. Neo also believed that it would be difficult for the criminal justice system to deal effectively with Yee because of his age. On the afternoon of April 30, he waited at the State Courts for Yee to arrive. He knew the media was present when he slapped the blogger, and deliberately committed the offence as he wanted the assault to be publicised "so that the world at large would know that the victim was being taught a lesson''. Neo was arrested at about 2am the next day. Arguing for a sentence of two weeks' jail, DPP Man said Neo's offence was pre-meditated and featured a strong element of vigilantism, which undermined law enforcement mechanisms and the criminal justice system. "Public confidence in law enforcement mechanics and the criminal justice system will also be eroded if there is a widespread perception that it is acceptable to take the law into one's own hands and resort to violence in order to address a perceived injustice,'' he said. Neo said in his mitigation letter that Yee had been disrespectful to Singapore's founding father and insulted him, making all of Mr Lee's contributions "worthless''. He said Yee, whom he described as a "clever child'', had let everyone down. "What I feel is what everybody is feeling," he said. Slapping him would instil fear in the teenager, let him know what the ways of the world are and teach him a lesson, Neo said. He said he knew it was wrong to slap Yee but could not control himself. He could be jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000. 2. What has happened to our society? 'If he loses hearing, I'll just pay compensation' FURIOUS that a three-year-old boy hit his two-year-old son, a father allegedly slapped the older child. But the slap was so hard that the boy had to be taken to hospital yesterday as his right cheek had swelled up. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was arrested by police after members of the public called the authorities and stopped him from escaping. The two boys were believed to have been playing near a market in Toa Payoh Lorong 7 yesterday morning. They did not know each other, Lianhe Wanbao reported. At one point, the older child hit the other boy, incurring the wrath of the latter's father. After slapping the three-year-old, the man scolded him loudly, saying that he had not been brought up well by his family, eyewitnesses said. The commotion attracted a crowd and some people told the man off, saying that adults should not hit young children. Some bystanders said that the man was behaving arrogantly and pointed out that his actions could cause the boy to lose his hearing. But the man replied: "If he loses his hearing, I'll just pay compensation." The boys' families argued for about an hour after the incident. The three-year-old's grandfather, a 68-year-old retiree, said that he was shocked by the incident. Yesterday was a rare occasion when the older boy had accompanied the family's maid to the market. "It was very chaotic when the incident happened. When my grandson was hit, he was scared silly and couldn't even cry. The man who hit him later wanted to hit me, too," he said. Retiree Shen De Rong, 71, who was at the scene, said that no matter what happened between the two kids, parents should not use force on them. "How can a grown person do something like that to a small child? It was really barbaric," he said. Another bystander, Cai, 60, said many members of the public did not approve of the man's actions. "He could have tried to mediate or given a scolding, but he should never physically cause hurt," said Mr Cai. The man tried to leave the scene after hitting the three-year-old, but bystanders stopped him until the police arrived. He ended up sitting at a bench opposite a coffee shop. After the police arrived, they questioned the man. The police said they received a call at 9.56am requesting assistance in Toa Payoh Lorong 7 yesterday. A case of alleged assault was reported at the scene and a man was later arrested for being a public nuisance. Investigations are ongoing. The mother of the three-year-old boy declined to be interviewed when she was at the hospital, but she was reportedly angered by the incident. [email protected]

  6. previous years, he made cars more affordable to the masses, wanting to give most families an opportunity to own a car. this was what he said in previous rallies, with graphs showing how affordable cars have become (citing the price of Toyota Corolla as eg) To make this happen, ARF is lowered etc. consequently, with more cheap cars on the road, ERPs are raised to tax on usage and regulate congestion.... consistent with his ideology. this policy wasn't concurred by his dad, LKY, who still prefers to make car purchases more expensive through COE + ARF combo. and NOW!?!?!??! having raised ERP numerous times in a failed attempt to control traffic congestion, COE shot back to previous highs. This is a really LPPL situation for everyone. a WIN-WIN for the govt. CB.
