  2. 'Godfather' of Macau casinos Stanley Ho to retire Daisy Ho takes over as chairman and exec director; Angela Leong and Timothy Fok appointed co-chairmen and exec directors https://www.businesstimes.com.sg/consumer/godfather-of-macau-casinos-stanley-ho-to-retire MACAU gambling tycoon Stanley Ho will step down from his flagship casino empire SJM Holdings, the company said late on Thursday, as the 96-year-old magnate hands over the reins to his daughter. Known as the "godfather" of Macau casinos, Mr Ho has been instrumental in turning the former Portuguese colony on China's southern coast into a gambling boomtown, with gaming revenue surpassing Las Vegas. His retirement will take effect on June 12 at the end of SJM's annual general meeting, after which he will take on the new title of "chairman emeritus", the company said. Daisy Ho, his daughter, will take over as chairman and executive director, while his fourth wife, Angela Leong, and Timothy Fok, son of Stanley Ho's former business partner Henry Fok, will be appointed co-chairmen and executive directors. Gaming revenues in Macau were hit hard by a corruption crackdown launched by China's President Xi Jinping in 2012, but SJM is trying to lure visitors back to Macau with the sprawling new Grand Lisboa Palace complex, reportedly due to open in 2019. Mr Ho is the great-nephew of one of Asia's first tycoons, Robert Hotung, who was among Hong Kong's wealthiest individuals at the turn of the 20th century. He made his fortune smuggling luxury goods into China from Macau during World War II, before securing the only gaming licence in the then-Portuguese colony in 1962. The billionaire monopolised the gaming industry until 2002, when the government introduced foreign investors, sparking a boom which saw casino takings contribute around 80 per cent of the city's annual revenue. He stepped down as chairman from his Hong Kong-based conglomerate Shun Tak Holdings last year with his daughter Pansy Ho succeeding him.

At least 20,000 workers will receive food vouchers which can be used at more than 160 participating food outlets, including Kopitiam, Foodfare and Fei Siong. Priority will be given to, among others, housekeeping staff, patient care assistants and ambulance drivers, people Mr Lim described as unsung heroes. In a statement his private office released on Friday (May 8), he said their work is often less visible, but no less important to the front-line response. "He hopes that these meals will boost the morale of these front-line healthcare workers and bring them some comfort in this difficult period," the statement read. They can redeem meals at their own convenience. Beneficiaries are staff at Alexandra Hospital, Changi General Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, National University Hospital, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Sengkang General Hospital, Singapore General Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Centre for Infectious Diseases. The owner of Spanish football club Valencia is one of a number of moneyed people here who have extended a helping hand to others during the coronavirus crisis. His daughter, socialite Kim Lim, has been delivering food to front-line healthcare workers in hospitals and foreign worker dormitories.
  4. NEW YORK - Singapore's Andy Chua has won the right to dine with the world's third-richest man Warren Buffett, news reports said on Saturday. Mr Chua put up his winning bid of about US$2.2 million (S$2.71m) on eBay to have lunch with investment guru, Mr Buffett, reported the Omaha World-Herald, which is owned Berkshire Hathaway Inc, where Mr Buffett is Chief Executive. The five-day auction attracted 12 bidders who made 121 bids. Bidders had to put in a minimum bid of US$25,000, and had to be certified as legitimate by the auction company. Mr Chua's winning bid - a grand total of US$2,166,766. Little else is known about him. He and 7 others will get to meet Mr Buffett in Manhattan for lunch at Smith & Wollensky, a 10-restaurant chain of steakhouses with small-batch bourbons and deep-polished wood. A shrimp cocktail there costs about US$20 and the long bone rib-eye close to US$70. Bloomberg News reported that Chua was the 12th and final hopeful to bid with less than 10 minutes to go in the auction Friday evening. Proceeds from the auction, which surpassed US$1 million on Wednesday, will go to the Glide Foundation, a nurse-staffed medical clinic, a shelter and a soup kitchen serving three meals a day. -Asiaone Full article: http://www.malaysia-chronicle.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=297642:spores-andy-chua-pays-$-27-mil-for-right-to-dine-with-warren-buffett&Itemid=3#ixzz33xfQPIuG

The contest took a tragic turn when one of the mistresses, who was eliminated based on her looks, drove her former lover and the four other women off a mountain road in an apparent fit of anger, the Shanghai Daily reported. The driver died in the December 6 crash while the man and four other women were hospitalised, the report said.
