Mr Ross Powell, 71, and his son Andrew, 32, died on Sunday after their life-saving boat overturned in the surf during the rescue of a 30-year-old man near the Twelve Apostles, a series of massive limestone stacks situated off the Victoria state coast. The tourist, whose nationality and name have not been released, had been wading at the mouth of a river when he got into trouble. He was winched from the water alongside a third lifesaver from the boat, who was seriously injured, by a rescue helicopter and taken to hospital, Victoria Police said. The bodies of the Powells were found in the water shortly after. The tragedy has rocked the small tourist town of Port Campbell where the two men came from, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison leading the tributes. "Surf lifesavers are selfless & brave. We thank them all for their service & extend our deepest sympathies to Ross & Andrew's family & friends," Mr Morrison tweeted on Monday. Surf Lifesaving Victoria president Paul James hailed the pair as heroes, and said the conditions had been rough and "not the place to be swimming". "It's just terrible, it's heartbreaking," he told reporters in an emotional press conference of the death of the dairy farmers and experienced volunteer lifesavers. "I understand the boat was operating in a 2m swell, so a very high swell, and we know that it is very treacherous down there... These brave people, these heroes, have gone out to try and help." Ms Amber Griffiths, the partner of Andrew and who local media reported was pregnant with their second child, wrote about her heartbreak on Facebook. "Today we lost two of the most beautiful people to ever exist - always putting others first," she wrote. "The love of my life, light of my life, father of my baby girl. My heart is broken. I miss you Andrew Powell."
  2. New South Wales has received a new police patrol car in the form the FK8 Honda Civic Type R. However, it won't be chasing bad guys. Thanks to Honda Australia, the New South Wales Police Force has been given the new hot hatch for the next 12 months for promotional duties. Set to be utilized in the ‘Eyewatch’ social media initiative that aims to connect people with local police forces, the car is one of the tools that will try to encourage citizens to be active participants in making their communities safer. Making its public debut at the Fairfield Police and Community Expo in a few days' time, the car will be taken to events throughout the state. “The Civic Type R has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding driving experience in the hot hatch segment. It has proven to be immensely popular with customers, enthusiasts and the motoring media, so we’re positive the NSW Police Force will find it to be a great community engagement tool. “At Honda we believe in the power of helping others, so this sponsored partnership with the NSW Police Force aligns seamlessly with work of The Honda Foundation and its goal of making a difference in the lives of people through giving back to the community that supports them,” Honda Australia Director Stephen Collins said.

This follows a Feb 4 article where the duo are said to have embellished an article posted by a witness of an incident during the recent Thaipusam festival. The TRS article had claimed a Filipino family had sparked an exchange which led to three Singaporean men being arrested on Feb 3. But no Filipino family was involved. Now she is saddled with a unhealthy child. Australian couple is accused of abandoning the down syndrome child. They took the healthy one. Thai agency could also be faulted. World wide donations are coming in but how much can it help? http://www.smh.com.au/world/gammy-surrogate-mother-threatens-to-sue-australian-parents-20140804-1005fv.html Bangkok: The Thai surrogate mother of an abandoned baby boy says she will sue the Australian couple who left their son behind, challenging the child's father to appear with her on television. Pattharamon Janbua claims the biological father of the twins came to a Bangkok hospital after she gave birth six months ago and saw both children - the girl, whom he took home, and her brother, called Gammy, who has Down sydrome and is critically ill. But the West Australian parents have denied abandoning Gammy. The ABC quoted the unidentified father as saying a Thai surrogacy clinic doctor only told him and his wife about the girl.

  14. Formula One world champion Jenson Button timed his pitstop to perfection to chalk up his first win for McLaren in a rain-affected and entertaining Australian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Briton, a winner in Melbourne with Brawn GP last year, took the lead when Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, starting on pole position, was pitched into the gravel mid-race by a brake failure. "It feels so good ... Guys, amazing job, I think we got that pitstop pretty much perfect," Button, who went for an early change to slicks that proved crucial, shouted over the team radio after beating Renault's Robert Kubica by 12.034 seconds. "It was the right time. Fantastic job, this is a great way to start the year." Poland's Kubica was comfortably clear of Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa, who nosed out Spanish team mate Fernando Alonso for third. Seven times world champion Michael Schumacher finished 10th for Mercedes after being effectively ruled out of the running at the first corner. Button's left front tyre hit Alonso's right at the first turn, causing the Spaniard to spin and collide with Schumacher and break the Mercedes' front wing. Both then had to fight back from the rear. Only 14 cars finished the race as intermittent showers made tyre selection, and the timing of pitstops, a key factor on the bumpy street circuit. The safety car made an early appearance when BMW Sauber's Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi rebounded off a barrier at turn six on the first lap, crashing into Williams's German driver Nico Hulkenberg. The incident also forced Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi out. Double world champion Alonso, who won on his Ferrari debut in Bahrain last week, stayed top of the standings after two races with 37 points, in front of Massa who has 33. Button's victory allowed him to claw back to 31 in the championship race and allowed McLaren to close to 54 points, second behind Ferrari on 70 in the constructors' standings. 18. SINGAPORE : An Australian journalist has been charged with drug trafficking and possession in Singapore. 41-year-old Australian Broadcasting Corporation correspondent Peter Lloyd was arrested on Wednesday. Investigators believe Lloyd may have supplied drugs to a Singaporean who was arrested separately. Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers seized from him a packet of designer drug 'ice' or methamphetamine weighing some 0.8 grammes, one improvised smoking pipe and six syringes. Reporters and photographers staked out the Subordinate Court for hours on Friday, expecting to see Lloyd turn up in court to be charged. But that did not happen. The CNB confirmed Lloyd was actually charged on Friday afternoon at Changi General Hospital. That is because he is being treated for a serious eye infection which he contracted while on leave in Singapore from his posting in New Delhi. Bail has also been offered to him, although CNB did not say how much the bail was. Lloyd is due to appear in court again next Friday. If convicted of the charges, he faces up to 20 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane. - CNA/ms
