My paper

Actually, the lady didn't need to confess that her father doesn't understand English, which trigerred off so much backfire. Did she tell the stewardess that "her father doesn't understand English, but anyhow give him a copy of the English newspaper"? Doesn't she think it's more reasonable for her father to share a copy of the newspaper with her, and stop wasting resources and deprive others of it. Does she need to hold all the sections to read, or is it very difficult to move her ass to pass the newspaper to her father?

In logical thinking i agreed with you it could be wasting resources. However in service industry, it is a smarter way for the cabin crew to use her choice of words rather than a straight answer. I guess no customers really want a point blank answer. They might think "wah, why SIA stewardess answer so direct one, not professional in answering simple request" they might taken aback and who knows they might re-consider taking SQ again.

About the SQ staff treating foreigners well and being rude to locals...

I've flown SQ almost every time in my trips overseas. And really, I've never been treated badly.

I never encountered a rude SQ steward/stewardess. In fact, I've never encountered any SQ staff who's not very very polite to me.

The service is great and on some flights when im very dehydrated, I'd ask for endless cups of water. The steward and stewardess who were servicing my cabin - on such flight - always smiled and acceded to my requests for water promptly - never begrudgingly.

Seriously, I find it inconceivable that some locals are being treated differently. But I doubt these people complaining are lying either. Perhaps these complaints are coming from local SQ passengers who were rude themselves? I mean I've seen how some ppl here treat service staff. Ordering them around. Not saying thank you. Acting like they're royalty. So I don't totally blame SQ staff for snapping back when they encounter crass passengers.

Moreover, I've always flown SIA simply because I've flown others and there's really no comparison.

I must say though that I also did witness an SQ staff being rude to a passenger on one occasion.

But guess what? She was being rude to an angmo. The guy was eating some food (something from BK i think) he brought on board, and didn't put his table up like he was asked to - all while the plane was taxiing to take off. I could remember it cos he had body odour and I sat behind him for the whole 9 hour flight. Good thing his BO was "blown" forward for most of the flight cos of the air conditioning.

in the past u can find the AMTK attitude but is now better.

only think is local SG cannot speak fluet & proper mandarin which is a shame, although their flight hv better mixture of nationality. the Jap girls r definitely better in service.

Same here.

From my past experience, I think the flight attendants are alright.

I tend to think that particular passenger may have to do some self-reflection.

where do u want to draw the line?

i think it is not unreasonable for her to ask for one more copy of papers for her folks who are sitting at another section.

would u move ur butt to pass the papers to another passenger sitting at another section? just bec in this scenario so the lady was so wrong? Come on, this is SQ, not like she asking for 3 copies of every available paper...

but that is not the main point, i am from the service industry and have met anal customers but u still have to sail through the entire encounter smiling without flinching. What happens after the customer leaves and in my private moments are another matter althogether.

so coming from SQ, this is a low.

I didn't say that this air stewardess is being biased towards foreigners in her attitude and being rude to locals.

I was just amused at how MCFers were so quick to suan and flame the lady when the stewardess was obviously having some attitude problem and service malfunction. Considering she's a lead stewardess some more.

If it had been a passenger complaining about how the stewardess was giving her attitude while being nice to an ang moh passenger, the stewardess would have been flamed to no end for sure, judging by the usual complaints about FT and the like. [sly]

I was from the service industry too.

I guess for us we understand that the behaviour of the stewardess was definitely unacceptable from a professional point of view.

And this passenger wasn't even being unreasonable in the first place to trigger such a response from the stewardess. From our line of work, we should know that a demanding or rude customer will NEVER just mumble "Okay" when shown such attitude.

I just wonder, if she had not asked for a copy of papers for her dad, and the stewardess hadn't known of their relations, would the stewardess have offered her dad a copy of the papers when she reached his aisle? [rolleyes]

Yes. In all my flights with SQ, I never "command" any SQ stewardess to do this or that. I treated them with respect and always get treated like royalty.

Certainly, I would if they asked me for it. I travel with big group of friends for golf, and holidays with relatives and I'd done that all the time. If they're seated within reach, I can pass half the papers to them and make a switch later on. If not, I'm sure they can wait for me to finish reading. I don't need to occupy myself just reading papers for the entire duration of the flight. 10 - 20 mins is all I need to read papers.

That....I have to agree to a certain level... [laugh][laugh]

Women do check out other women and are probably jealous to a certain point. I do know some women who do silly things just because they are jealous of other women.

But men too what! Just that they prefer to be called 'competitive' instead of jealous. [:p]

Well, since you shared with us your views.. I presume you will also share newspapers on the plain.. or it irks you if someone borrow newspapers tat you cast aside after an hour? If Ms. Tan really wanted and is considerate enough she would have shared the papers with her parents or even request for extra copy if there are any left, wl dun speak English somemore. Many times passengers dun get to read the papers not because there isn't any, its due to this type of selfish mentality.

If Ms. Tan take European airlines, the stewardess maybe bo hiew her, speaking in German "er.. e'cuse me.. can you give a copy of the German newspaper to my father as well.. he dun speak German so I am requesting on his behalf." [laugh]

What a luffing stock.. [laugh]

If Ms. Tan think that it is an embarrassment to be told to share newspapers within same family, that why asked in the 1st place? Not embarraassed to ask such an embarrassed question meh? [laugh]

For a personality like her.. watever reply will nt please her.. obviously picking bone in an egg.. or maybe if its a steward then different story liao.. [idea]

In a small enclosed area like a plane cabin, it would obviously be embarrassing to be told off loudly for anything because most passengers would be within earshot.

The stewardess could definitely have handled the situation in a better way and this complaint letter wouldn't have been written.
