One-time verification?

I've got a bright yellow box that says I have to verify personal information to remove the bright box.

1. Is this necessary?

2. What's the information used for?

3. What's to stop people entering bogus information?

The info isn't really privy.

If you think there is no use for it, you can dun verify but at the same time i believe the mods have the right to not grant you access to the forum.

I believe this info is when there is legal, criminal suits flying around. It may also be for demographic purposes. And with some info available to the mods, people will watch what they say to a certain extent.

Yes, that is what I am getting at. There appears to be no mechanism to prevent false information from being submitted. You simply fill in all the required fields and you're off.

There is a declaration that the information "We are requesting for your contact number for ease of communication. We will never give out your contact number to any other parties unless required by law."

Is it a crime to submit false information for an internet forum?

Unless it is, it would be no different whether the mods have got this profile page or not - chances are they will still have to trace IP logs etc. to find who the person behind the keyboard is.

I guess if it is made privy only to the mods. It should be fine. But if it is made open for everyone to view then i think there should be a control somewhere.

Hopefully the mods will answer this.

This verification requirements came out of the blue. After 4 days and 200plus postings, there is no response from Admin/Moderators to address the issues and allays the concerns of one's privacy. Furthermore there was no heads-up prior to this requirement popping out.

What I am concerned here is the Mods have accessed to the privy informations we are required here to provide. Then where is the problem? The Mods are all members here just like you and me. They were invited to be Mod, on a voluntary basis. Some have relinquished and some more will be invited as Mods. So you see, once you become a Mods - you may have access to these privy info.

Contact number is sensitive. Some do have mine cos I have met them and I gave out to them.

" We are requesting for your contact number for ease of communication. We will never give out your contact number to any other parties unless required by law." Where is the control point that privy informations may not fall into the wrong hands? To me there is a big grey area here.

My stand is that I refuse to submit my personal information to what appears to be a flawed system, as there appears to be no way of verifying the submitted information.

Thus far the moderators have been helpful in removing one of my double posts, but otherwise have not commented on the questions posed, and the silence is rather obvious.

Why get so worked up?

Just fill what you want to fill...end of story.

Or leave it alone and see the yellow box everytime.

Neutral Newbie

The reason for the silence till now is due to the large number of drifters in this thread. I will be deleting all the drifting posts, and clarify the need for the verification and some questions that some members may have. To the drifters, do note that all drifting posts will be deleted in threads of "Feedback & Suggestions " in the future.

Why The Need For Verification?

The collection of personal information is a standard feature of all forums. This is to enable the admin team to know the profile of our members, so as to better improve the forum based on the needs of the members. The admin team is actively trying to improve the usability of MCF, as well as to unite the members, make this community a more close-knit one. The profile of the members will give us the direction to make this happen.

MCF has been around since 2001, and much of the personal information, example income, martial status, car make, etc, of the members has since changed. This is a one-time verification exercise that will remind all old members to update their info. Some information was also lost during the recent server migration, and this exercise will hopefully help retreive most of them.

While it is true that personal information can be falsified, the need to do so should not be there.

The need for the contact number is for ease of communication. Till date, MCF has received quite a few lawsuits & police warning/enquiry about its members. We believe that these issues could have been resolved the easy way if the member was contactable. Providing the IP address of the user to the police, and letting them trace out the user via the ISP makes the issue grow much bigger as time and money has already been spent just to trace the member. There have been cases whereby a member has a full emailbox, and did not turn on the PM function, or PM box is full, or did not see our message, thus making them uncontactable.

FAQ

What details of mine will be made public?

Of the compulsory fields, only "Gender", "Location", "Martial Status" and "Car Make" will be made public.

Will moderators be able to view access all my personal information?

No. Only the 4 administrators have access to your personal information. Moderators only have access to the public information like all other members. Administrator list here.

Turbocharged

I will act as the devil's advocate here. [scholar]

If I'm a marketing personnel running a website/forum with large numbers of regular users, what do i see in front of me? i have merchants, dealers, advertisers approaching me to strike up some deals. i have no exact users' profile or demographic to show those interested in making a deal or perhaps bargain a better deal.

Just like phone numbers are needed in lucky draw to inform participants if they've won the prize, phone numbers are needed here too for "ease of communication" in case of any unforseen legal tussle. [:)]

Just like what one user advised, just fill up what you want to fill. [:p]
