Hao80 Neutral Newbie March 30, 2010 Share March 30, 2010 If you really need a car, picanto can also do the job but why sciroccos ? If you need for fast ride, how fast can you travel in Sg? Any Class 2A and Class 2 bikes can easily "che" your car.. ↡ Advertisement
Hansbaobao 1st Gear March 30, 2010 Share March 30, 2010 (edited) To TS, i tink the best way is dun ask? in my case, i never asked for a car. I would drive my dad's 2nd car to skool whenever my mom doesnt need it. Other than that, i just take public tpt to school from the far east all e way to boon lay. One fine day in 2008, we saw a PI roadshw and saw the fit 08. My dad then and there decided to get me a car instead(gt a jazz in e end tho). When my bro got into Uni that yr as well, he sold off his second car and bot a smaller car for him as well. My bro and sis shares that ride cos they r studying in the same school. Before that, my sis also take bus n mrt, nvr ask at all. My bottomline is, if your parents can afford it and think you need it, they would have got it for you. Matrixx 3rd Gear March 30, 2010 Share March 30, 2010 For me, I remembered I went to take driving lessons immediately when I hit the age to do it, pass it the first time, and couldn't wait to get my hands on a car of my own. (I've always love automobile since young) My parents not rich, but could afford to get a car for me then. (They knew how eager I was about getting one) But I turned them down, saying if I ever own a car, it's gonna come from my own pocket. Although they can afford it, I just don't want this liability to be imposed on them. So I squeeze on the bus to school everyday (AMK to Clementi), and work part time as well to raise the dough to get my very own car. Finally in less than a year, I got my very own car (a COE car though but then, it was everything to me). I don't know about the rest, but when I worked for my own car, I felt a sense of acheivement and pride when I first got it. So, threadstarter, it's not that people are intentionally putting you down, but whether your parents can well afford a car for you is one thing. Working hard and getting whatever you want in life yourself makes you a better and more independant man. And I personally think you'll treasure it more when it comes out of your own pocket. ** And yes, by the way, I'm from Generation X, born in the mid-70s**
Windchoco 1st Gear April 1, 2010 Share April 1, 2010 I drove my friend scirocco before 1.4 version de , because he need to fetch more people and need bigger car, so he borrowed my car i drove 100KM/H+ along BKE and i can say it is very stable and the engine react very fast not like my car will lag awhile , but the car is very very very uncomfortable, the backseat is even worst. if you want speed take this car, if you want comfortable (my advise is do not take this car!) what is your car? (Just want to understand the comfort level u r relating to.)

Lebet Neutral Newbie April 1, 2010 Share April 1, 2010 i think i can contribute to this thread.. i got my driving license after my NS. Close to a year later, my dad bought me a kangoo. Cost around $32K. At that time, kangoo was relatively cheap, and running on diesel means i could save, as i travel quite alot to sch and to my gf place. I drove the van for about 2 years. The monthly installment wasn't very high, and my parents could well afford it. So my advice to TS is that if he wants a ride, maybe he can look at cheaper options. I think a used VW is a tad ex. If speed is not an issue, why not go for a used kangoo? Assuming his parents has a company etc etc. If not. maybe can get those 2nd hand avante, or picanto. My belief is that the first ride need not get anything too good. First car will always be like an experiment. Got to learn about taking care of engine etc. 2 years after i gotten my van, my other sibling got married. So now, can take it as i'm the only child supported by my parents. then my sibling wanted to sell her own car, so that gotten my parents to think of upgrading my van to a car. In the end, we decided to get a new one. Cause it was not worth taking over my sis car. It was a 3 year old nissan that is going to break down soon. Sold of my van, and almost broke even (had to top-up $800). So it was in the final year of my uni, my parents decided to get a new car for me. My mum was actually looking at the toyata vios in Jan. Thank goodness i didn't want toyata... if not, i could have been in the news for the COE topup... Since i was in my final year, my parents decide to buy me a car first, then when i grad at the end of the year, i can go work and upkeep it myself BEFORE the COE quota cut. We foresee that COE prices may hit 40 to 50K in the future. We settled for a KIA. the price in jan was pretty good. My parents wanted to buy before the COE quota was up. I need a car because i am running research for my 4th year. I have loads of boxes to carry to and fro from school. It will also be the same if i want to do my masters next year. So personally, i feel that it is ok for a parent to buy his or her child a ride., as long as the parents can well afford it. When i'm a father myself, i will also do the same for my children. The only thing I will do is to buy a cheaper ride for them first. Let them explore car owner-ship. It's very common western countries for college students to drive used cars. It's very common western countries for college students to drive used cars. You are very fortunate. About the point on college students from western countries, while it is common for them to drive used cars, it is also very common to start living on their own at the age of 18, studying while working part-time to earn an income for their expenses. If you are still lyching from the parents at a grand age of 21, it will be an outcry.

If you are still lyching from the parents at a grand age of 21, it will be an outcry. oh.. but western countries' boys no need to go 2 years NS,,,. And their part-time jobs at Macdonald is at least more reasonable than ours@$4.50-$5.00 an hour. I know i'm very fortunate. And i thank God and my parents for that. But definitely not as fortunate as those who born with a big golden spoon whose parents buy them a SLK. my other friends are driving mark X, VW beetle, and Peugeot. My low-cost korean is humbled beside them. i think the main issue is about financial abundance. If the parents can afford comfortably, and they decide to buy a car for the child, why not? I think it's up to the preference for individual's household to decide what is and is not. Everybody has the right to live whatever life they want, at long as their pockets can afford it. If not, we should also cry out when people spend $170K on a merc, and not just $70K for a korean ride. So my advice to TS is that, if your parents can afford another car, sit down with them and discuss EXACTLY how much it will cost per month. Look for used korean or maybe a toyata vios. The min. amount that is needed safely is at least $1K to about $1.3K per month. Since i believe that you just started school, probably they still have a few more years to pay for your education. Work it out with them. At least for me, i'm in my final sem, and they have almost paid off my study fees in full. And i'm treating my car as taking a loan from my parents. When i start working, i will pay the loan myself, and return to them on a monthly installment as well.
Lebet Neutral Newbie April 1, 2010 Share April 1, 2010 Only 3 years only. Abused car. No offense dude obviously it is a badly abused car. thank the japs for extreme engineering. It is that time of the year to bring out the joke when a woman driver's car broke down, and told the mech... "what's engine oil, need to change meh?" respraying the whole car, changing suspension, plus hitting back the bumper + other servicings like brake pads etc would probably amount to $2k plus. REALLY NO POINT at all. Don't know if drive for 1 or 2 more years will stall on the road anot.
Stary Turbocharged April 1, 2010 Share April 1, 2010 because parents love you and if they can afford it they can buy something for your own good and convenience. so your son can sleep more before heading to school etc Dude, this doesn't sound like love. This sound more like trying to spoil the kid. Want to sleep more before heading to school? Can't sleep early is it? Sleep early is good for health and cheap compare to buying a car. Come on man.....your parents earn money not easy....next time when you work you will know. I passed my driving at the age of 16 and my parents wanna buy a car for me. I said NO. Taking bus and walking to school is easy for me. I told them I rather they put it into my education. Please have some backbone.
