  1. WASHINGTON: Nearly one in five American women has been victims of rape or attempted rape at some point in their lives, the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) said Wednesday in a disturbing report on sexual violence in the United States. Releasing the results of a first-ever survey of nearly 10,000 women contacted randomly by telephone in 2010, the federal agency said 18.3 percent of women "have been raped at some time in their lives." That includes "completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, or alcohol/drug facilitated completed penetration," it added in an executive summary of the 113-page report posted on its website (www.cdc.gov). Just over half of female rape victims (51.1 percent) said they had been targeted by an "intimate partner" -- a current or former partner or spouse -- and 40.8 percent by an acquaintance. It also found that 1.3 million women had been raped during the year preceding the survey -- a substantially higher number than the 188,380 rapes and sexual assaults cited in a Department of Justice crime survey for 2010. And it revealed that 24.3 percent of women -- and nearly one in seven men -- have suffered "severe physical violence" at the hands of an intimate partner, such as being hit, slammed against a surface, or beaten. "This landmark report paints a clear picture of the devastating impact these violent acts have on the lives of millions of Americans," Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said. In a statement, she said the findings of the ongoing National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey would help the administration of President Barack Obama shape policy to combat domestic violence and sexual abuse. Scott Berkowitz, president of the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, or RAINN, the nation's biggest anti-sexual violence group, said the data on the lifetime risk of rape was "pretty close" to levels seen in previous studies. But he added "it's hard to know what to make" of the yawning difference in the number of rapes in the CDC report and the Department of Justice survey, which is based on a substantially bigger number of respondents. "We really need to look into this more," he told AFP. "But overall, it shows what crime statistics have shown for years -- that this is an enormously violent crime that affects nearly every family in America." The report also touched upon male rape, finding that one in 71 men -- nearly five percent of all American men -- had been raped in their lifetime, based on responses from more than 7,400 men who participated in the survey. More than a quarter of them, or 27.8 percent, said they had been raped before they were 10 years old. The report called sexual and intimate-partner violence a major public health concern, with survivors liable to face everything from actual physical injury to mental illness and gynaecological or pregnancy complications. "These consequences can lead to hospitalisation, disability or death," it said.

    Moths

Recently we've had many moths inside our HDB. First of all there were some small moths maybe 10mm long but we've also had maybe 6 or 7 moths which were larger than 50mm, I think they might have been Achaea serva. We've been living here 8 years now and never seen any moths. And before that in our previous HDB just across the road from where we live now we never saw any moths either. Now I know there are many moths here some of them a lot bigger than the ones I've seen but what surprised me is that they've suddenly appeared.

  5. used to drive a concerto (fuel injection), when i pump to the brim, it will give me 500over km. if i do some hard driving also got 400plus. Car was more than 15yrs old. i could do a century sprint in 10sec with a good launch in dry conditions. no fuel enhancer, just a good 100% synthetic oil and engine treatment. open pod stainless steel. straight through exhaust. spark enhancer. NOBODY believed me... (cars in the 90s had great improvments with juz an open pod and straight through exhaust, cant say the same for modern cars now) so i checked my car specs... oil tank was 50L... most model cars now are 40L? and my rims were 16inch 45s... but not sure if original was 14inch 65s... so maybe my tyres were to big hence the extra reading in my distance... hmmmm.. dont know leh... cause i had a friend who drove an EG 2-dr and he clocked 500km on his full tank too (note that i am NOT referring to highway figures) but he had 2 carbon seats, carbon doors, boot bonnet.. used 15inch 55s. hmmmmm........ is 500km really not possible on a full tank of petrol in petrol driven cars? i thought that the city n jazz DSI versions also were very furl efficent?
  6. COE prices have made a lot of people unhappy. We all want a car and think that COE does not work and controlling usage works better than ownership. I think we can have a simple poll to see how many people will buy multiple cars and whether they see problem finding parking for their cars. Remember that the OMV of a Jap car is only around $20k.
  7. Recently saw many new bmw 7 series breakdown and require towing service. It is unlikely that it will breakdown but wonder why it always happens?? due to burst tire, failed engine, dead battery, failure in mechanism/electronic of the car or any other reason? Anyone can share the point?

  9. 30 March 2012 Straits Times A PRC couple cheated a 51 year old Singaporean cleaner of $130 two weeks ago in Bishan. According to media reports, Mr Koh was stopped on his way home by a PRC couple who begged him to lend him some money to buy food. The PRC woman explained that it was their first trip to Singapore and their friend who was supposed to receive them had gone abroad, hence leaving them stranded without any money for food or lodging. Mr Koh initially suspected that it might be a scam, but his heart softened upon hearing repeated pleas from the PRC woman whom he described as
  10. I started a thread on the lifespan of a clutch pump in preparation for this thread. you can read up on that here -> Clutch pump - good for how many pumps? the main reason for asking the question on how many pumps a clutch pump is good for, because if you want to use the pulse and glide method, you will be engaging and releasing the clutch more often for a manual car. How does the pulse and glide method work? When i first got my car, the average FC is around 8.5-9KM/L after i read the above, i tried it on my ride. and i was really pleased with the results! I got an average of 10KM/L after trying the above method for one tank! I am still in the midst of perfecting the pulse and glide, but it works! and i must say, quite wonderfully too! imagine, i managed to squeeze a whole 15% more mileage out of my small tank! For those who are already pulsing and gliding, do share your experience. For those who are not, after reading this, are you going to try?

  14. http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2012/12...e-rape-charges/ Indian authorities may have promised harsher punishments for rapists. But they could start by looking at politicians themselves. According to the Association for Democratic Reforms, a nonprofit organization, authorities have charged at least six members of India

  18. When I was cleaning my rims just now, I notice one of my Michelin Energy Saver tyre had similar cracks on the sidewall as shown in the picture. (Photo was extracted online) But mine was not as deep. It's not very visible yet. Anyone can advice if I need a replacement or the cracks are normal due to exposure to bad weather on our sunny island? Cheers!
  19. as with all hydralic pumps, there is a certain threshold before the pump is no longer good or efficient. i wonder, with the clutch hydralic pumps that are attached to the pedal, there is a primary clutch pump and a secondary clutch pump. How may pumps (as in how many time you depress the clutch pedal) is the pump good for before it is time to replace? Anyone ever measured? or is the info found on any specs that we can read from?

  23. http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...dating-20130305 FACEBOOK "confession" pages, which allow users to share secrets anonymously, may have helped lovelorn students express their romantic intentions to their objects of affection, but the majority of undergraduates do not want to date, a survey has found. Some 400 undergraduates aged between 19 and 25 from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University and SIM University were asked what was most important to them. And romance was not anywhere on top of their minds. The survey found that six in 10 respondents are not in a relationship. Of these, seven in 10 have no plans to actively pursue one. BACKGROUND STORY WHAT'S IMPORTANT? Respondents were asked to rank these options in order of priority* 1 Getting good grades 2 Earning money 3 Finding a job 4 Socialising 5 Keeping fit 6 Finding a life partner * Respondents also ranked "Others", which came in seventh. KEY FINDINGS 60% are single. Of these, seven in 10 do not plan to actively pursue a relationship 35% would start looking for a partner only after establishing their career, and 38 per cent could not decide. Only one in four would not wait to build a relationship 90% agree that a relationship provides emotional support, and 70 per cent said being in one is a good thing
