I have a 1.3 (A) toyota registered in 02 Oct 2002. Was quoted trade in price of $17,000. See details below. It is better to change car now or wait and take chances. Anyone feel that COE will go down even by a couple of thousands? Planning to buy Renault Fluence. Most likely will keep the car for 10 years. How is Renault Fluence? How is the reliability? Im looking for a reliable car. Thank you.

If you would like to keep the new car for 10 years, I would personally recommend one of Honda, Nissan or Toyota as in my experience, they are highly reliable with moderate maintenance costs. Conti would be high on maintenance! All the best!

With all predictions going right, the COE is going to continue to go up, atleast till your target of 2012. If you want to see how it goes for a couple of months, it should be okay too...

Change now your ist can fetch $17k. Change at end of 10yrs you get $11k.

So to drive for another 1 yr 4 mths your depreciation is about $6k. Consider low and worthwhile. But must factor in any major breakdown in this period, possibility of Coe rocketing. These unknowns are the risk you need to consider.

Even his car can fetch $17K, but if he buys now, all the car is also very expensive.

I agree .... the Renault Fluence is actually a Samsung SM - MIK. If you intend to keep the car for 10 years, go for Japs.

Turbocharged

There is a "Vehicle to be exported" field to key in. Seems to me that whether you put Yes/No, it does not make a difference to the Total Rebate Amount.

Then why ask, anyone knows?

If you are planning to change car just because of budget and not due to backside itchy, then IMO it is not a good time to buy a new car now. One year down the road, COE premiums may drop (or go up, but I don't think Cat A will go up higher than the levels they are now) and cars will be cheaper.

Secondly, if you intend to keep for 10 years, I won't advise you to buy the conti car like Renault if reliability is your main concern. If you must buy a Conti, go for one that is hugely popular - like golf. Most workshops/stockists don't store many spares for uncommon conti cars due to lower demand for them. Five or six years down the road, it is even more problematic. I'd think you will have an easier time with a BMW or Merc than an uncommon one like the Fluence. If you intend to sell the car to a dealer in a few years time, you may get a rude shock as I believe not many will want to take the car unless it is a popular one like BMW or Merc.

For a conti car, a wait of a few weeks at the AD workshop for parts to be flown in is not uncommon. Imagine AD having no ready stock of the parts you require, what chances of other stockists keeping that parts? If the car model is not sold in Malaysia, you will have to be prepared to tow it back to Singapore if it breaks down in MY.

Japanese cars are bland, but reliability is generally top notch and if they do break down, you can get them repaired easily. If the model is popular, you can even get OEM parts or parts from chop shops.

The view expressed is just my own.

I don't know where you got your info from, but this is certainly not the case for major warranty items. Firstly what parts are you referring to? And do you think the AD will be simple-minded enough NOT to stock up on major parts?

Thanks for all the feedback. Decided to take the chance and continue using it until scrap; while watout for lower COE.

I understand Honda introducing new model in Jan 2012. May be I should wait for it or wait for new modal Toyota. In the meantime will test drive Hyundai Elantra and Mazda 3.

Neutral Newbie

I am driving a Mit Lancer GLX Manual registered in Jan 2006. I have since clocked 175,000km since I am doing sales.

I am thinking of changing to a Mark-X since it is a reliable car, except for the fuel consumption.

Please advise if it is a good time for me to change or hold on... Thank you!

If now change new car and top up a little is ok. But you are upgrading from 1.6 to 2.5 litres car and have to top up too much $$ then you have to think twice.
