Hi all,

Have anyone here not sending children to attend school but choose to coach them personally at home? Also, to prepare them eventually for O level and A level. What are the pros and cons?

Assuming at least one of the parent not working and is able to attend to the children education..

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Eh.. the cons is.. children will not get to learn interaction.. and it is very important to let kids exposed to other people and interact with each other.

Keep study and study and no interaction end up may do more harm than good.

Why not say, go to normal school.

Then the parents help with the homework and additional tuition themselves. Best of both world!

When it comes to teaching/coaching, leave it to the professionals.

Seriously, going to NIE for a year does not make one a professional.

I have seen teachers continuing their lesson when students are running around in the classroom, sleeping, chatting with one another.

Pros:

- One to one ratio, ie, more focus, more personalisation of content and method

- No need to wake up early and get stuck in traffic jam

- No need to attend silly functions like Speech Day, RHD, CNY, etc

- No need to wear uniform

- Flexible learning timing

Cons:

- Reduced interaction, might result in low EQ or low awareness, ie, naive and gullible

- Unable to adapt to changes because only taught in one manner, pace of learning completely match individual, ie, cannot learn fast

- Loss of experience in CCA, Oversea Learning Trips

- Reduced role models

- Taxing on Parents' time and energy

These are just a short list

If you need information. Here is it.

As for interaction, they do have a lot. The homeschooling kids come together to play. I wouldn't worry about lower EQ myth.

There are resources for homeschooling parents.

Curricular changes with MOE requirements. They are not an isolated group, contrary to the ill info that is perpetrated here.

As for CCA, they got a variety of stuff that even schools don't have. I have learnt their kids learn sailing etc.
