Saw the new on Yahoo this morning. Gosh, i thought the photo is a 4s. Other than the upgraded hardware (nothing spectacular) and some new features which i don't think is useful at all. Apple gonna think hard to revolutionize their current gadgets or developing new ones in order to stay as the market leader. What they are doing now is the same as other manufactures; upgrading and improving. If they get too comfortable, they gonna be another Nokia soon.

Yup. No doubt Android did take reference of iOS for their interface. Now, Android is catching up and i bet some will say it is better than iOS. But that's the hard truth especially in the consumer electronics market. One can't expect to develop a new technology and expect to stay in as the market leader forever. It's always a hit and run thing.

Nokia really need to do a premium phone with a well marketed strategy be to back in the playing field of smartphones. Somehow i always felt that their marketing strategy is always half hearted.

erm, normally most devices don't disconnect their data transmission, otherwise other services like push, imessage etc wont work ... so there's no real way to do what you suggest. the device may be able to switch frm LTE to 3G (or 2G) after loading an exceptionally large page, but that will require the OS to support it bro. (ie detect large amounts of data, do the switch and switch back) but that will probably drain more battery also to hop connections ><

go read up about how radio works. a handphone running on GPRS, 3G, HSDPA and LTE is essentially still a radio. to make use of radiowaves as a data medium, you need modulation standards. Modulated radiowave is analogous to analogue electric signals in electrical cabling and pulsed light signals in fibre cables.

 

The way the signal is modulated via LTE now, it is just very energy consuming. Unless one can devise a more efficient way to package data signals ie modulation standard, LTE is going to sap the battery.

 

Fyi, Edge which is not used in Singapore is a classic example of modifying modulation though in this case was to achieve higher data bandwidth, not to reduce energy consumption. In this case, the data frequency used is GPRS or 2G which meant that data carriers got to upgrade their data standards to EDGE by simply modifying their pre existing 2G cell towers instead of having to construct new ones.

i was actually thinking of toggling between 3G and LTE depending on usage. if it is possible.

 

i am not an expert, that is why i mention in my earlier post, Journalist are suggesting that apple next big move is heading towards effective energy management.

Thats when you are wrong on both counts.

 

1. Nokia already came up with the innovation to rectify this issue and even better, reduce energy consumption which is otherwise used due to the phone constantly shuttling back and forth between active and idle data states. This innovation is Mobile Dormancy and this feature has already been incorporated in iOS and Android.

 

Basically what happens is your phone by convention should shuttle between idle and active states depending on whether data is streaming in/out or not. This constant shuttling is very inefficient so what Mobile Dormancy does is to situate your phone in a semi idle cum active state i.e. dormant state so you are in middle ground. More responsive and less energy penalties to be had.

 

Needless to say, certain telcos don't support it as this is a feature that has to be supported by the networking equipment.

 

Fyi, Singtel supports MD, M1 doesn't and i don't care about Starhub.
