going to change oil aft 3 yrs servicing by AD....wanna try the M1 and find out got many types, 0w-30, 5w-30, 5w-40....one question on the SAE rating, understand the last number is rep the highest air temp of the surrounding weather the oil can tahan, so as sg tropical temp almost always exceed 30, does that mean we should not use oil rated 30 and below? but seems like a lot of bros using leh, how come... :wacko:

From what I know .

 

eg: 0w30

= thickness = 30

= 0 = something like the freezing point.

 

In Sunny singapore the 1st digit "0" not important as our weather is quite stable (ie, not sub zero temp)

 

We only need to look at the last 2 digits (ie "30") .

The first digit '0w' or '5w' is not significant as it relates to cold start in colder countries.

 

The last 2 digits relates to the oil thickness. The bigger the number, the thicker the oil. Usually higher performance cars and older cars will use thicker oil to protect the engine. Younger cars using 30 or 40 should be just fine.

As others have mentioned, the SAE number before the W is for cold weathers, not applicable in SG unless it snows.

Number after W is the viscosity (thickness) of the oil. Larger number = Thicker viscosity.

 

When oil is hot, it becomes thinner. What it means is that at high temperatures, the oil will only thin upto the rated number after W. eg W30, W40.

 

Usually older cars and some performance cars will need higher SAE rating for better protection. But thicker also means more resistance to the engine and results in higher FC and sluggishness.

Probably more evident in small cc cars. Large cc cars shouldn't feel much difference.

Car designers and application test engineers have conduct much more studies and testing than what you have thought about oil viscosity. So no need to worry so much , just follow what is recommended in the car user handbook.

Follow recommendations on your manual with regular svc.

 

EO subject can be very complicated if one choose to go into it's details.

I really don't understand how people can base their oil on air temp

 

and not what is recommended for their car by the manufacturer.

Car designers and application test engineers have conduct much more studies and testing than what you have thought about oil viscosity. So no need to worry so much , just follow what is recommended in the car user handbook.

 

I drive a parallel imported JDM car and the driver's manual (in full Japanese language) indicated use of 10w30 for ambient temps between -20 to 40 Celsius. My mechanic recons that the 10w30 will be fine for a cold country like Japan but 5w40 would be for better protection in a tropical country like Singapore. He also said that since my car is turbo-charged, a thicker viscosity oil will offer better protection for the turbo.

 

Which should I believe? Thanks in advance for any inputs on this.

i have been told by workshop mech to use w50 for my turbo-charged car.

 

F it...i have been using w40 all this while..and the engine runs great...

Depends on you wants to track the car.?Or for normal driving.?Tracking the car,need 'thicker' oil,normal driving,follows owner's manual.

Was using all along w30 or 40 the pickup seem very sluggish, currently based on manual go back to

W20.

 

Some said that the engine will loud but i feel it very silence and pickup excellence.

 

One question, could w20 have wear n tear problem if i running long distance which the oil getting thinner when it getting hotter ?

 

What are the symtom to this, one thing for sure when i start my engine hot the crank repeatedly thrie times

Then only start. :blink: Didnt have this issue for the W30 n W40, my ride 4 1/2 yrs.

The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to gradual deformation by shear stress or tensile stress. For liquids, it corresponds to the informal notion of "thickness". For example, honey has a higher viscosity than water.[1]

you believe a R&D engineer in EO

or

a workshop mechanics?????

 

I would want to believe in both becos one manufactured the car and the other maintains it! :)

 

Hmm... BTW, my bad I didn't mention my car's boost has been raised from stock 0.6 max to 1.2 max with an uprated turbo. Do you guys recon the 10w30 recommended by manufacturer still applicable?
