When you kill the messengers, eventually you will have no one to point out your mistakes.

Obviously the old adage applies: The truth hurts. So don't hurt the messenger. Change, so that whatever people say will no longer hurt because its no longer true.

I'll be waiting for 2016 to change the hurt.

i don't understand how the strip about the malays is seditious

its not like as if it was posted in some malay forum asking the malays to revolt right?

all i see is that it is pointing out a fact that the malay community in singapore has declined steadily. does it mean anything?

would any malay person protest about the dwindling malay population?

i seriously doubt so. i believe that the majority of malays here are not like those you find in malaysia or indonesia, the malays here see chinese and indian as friends and family. i doubt they'll even take notice that there are more indians and chinese around them

so how is it seditious?

i'm very surprised by how many people are siding with the authorities on this case.

what it means is that you are happy to give up your right to freedom of speech and expression. you will gain nothing by siding with the authorities.

i met my foreign friend a while back and he told me that when he first arrived in singapore, he was very surprised when he spoke with people. when asked about the govt most people will reply with like that lor... or accept it lor

he goes on to say, nowadays people are getting more and more particular about govt actions. he thinks that this is a sign of maturity.

the going is that what cannot be measured cannot be improved.

if we don't start questioning govt policies then we will never improve. we will remain stagnant and countries like malaysia and indonesia will over-take us.

personally i think that the demoncratic comics have no importance, they represent a person's view of the world and will be subjected to a degree of truth or lies but what is important is the message and content. whether i believe them or not is up to me. plus the fact that comments are allowed on every FB post, if he posts rubbish sooner or later people will catch him out and he'll lose creditability. the authorities will not need to take action

so we can continue to remain like this lor, or just accept it lor. or we can choose not to turn a blind eye

whether the former or the later is the more matured approach is your choice

let me also highlight an example

recently france approved gay marriage. my stance all this while is to oppose gay marriage.

however on BBC radio a comment was made, the person who highlighted that he's a straight father of 2 said that tonight he'll go to sleep knowing that when he wakes up tomorrow, he and the citizens of france will gain another right

whether or not the right is exercised doesn't matter

i changed my stance on gay marriage after that comment.

the way i see it, this leslie chew comic strip is not seditious. because his comic strip will not incite hatred for particular race or religion. if anything, the malays will be happy they have someone speaking up for them.

however, he is inciting hatred against the govt and he is disrespectful of government and their policies. is that sedition?

this i agree with you, but the point of the case was that the strip was seditious not that he is disrespectful of the govt

So Leslie was arrested for racist comments and insulting justice system?

The disturbing thing here is not the arrest, but how come previous racist comments by Amy Cheong and Jason Neo led to nothing? Isn't there double standards here?

Why is it dangerous when one cannot speak out against the judicial system? Cos it shows the judicial system will always determine what's right but will it always be right?

hehe i am not supporting leslie but more of like saying we should call a spade a spade.

if they want to charge him under another category of crime, it should make more sense.

Not sure if double standards. The cartoon was made with the intent to being published and shared. The others were remarks (which I myself don't condone) made on their own social media that then went viral through "sharing" which was then outside of their control.

I think the authorities are seeing it as a subtle message to suggest that the Malay population were marginalized in some way. If you look at it in another angle, this strip could be treated as a tool for more-sinister groups, local or foreign, to instigate unrest within the ethic population of Singapore. Racial stuff are unfortunately still pretty sensitive here. Esp when it comes to the minorities.

And if you look deeper, Leslie is using the Malays as a tool to further his point on the FT policy of Singapore. If you follow his comics he's quite a stanch Anti-FT activist. Most of his strips are one way or another relative to the FT policy. Looks like he pricked himself while threading of the government's roses.

agree. The reality is our govt is still not as democratic as we think. WP has done things a little smarter, bit by bit chewing off the pie, yet playing by the rules.

In any case, with social media these days, more arrests can only lead to greater sympathy from the public after all, sentiment on the ground is probably at its worst. Govt can arrest, force ppl to apologise, but u don't win hearts by forcing things on ppl. They might as well scrap elections and force us to live with a single govt? So miw better start changing before they lose the will of the people.

i don't think yr reasoning makes sense. Public or private, a crime is still a crime. You don't get away with murder just cos u intended to murder and keep silent about it.

If it's a good thing, not bad to be easily influenced actually.
