I believe its the numerous barricades/excuses put up against delivery of good performance in engineering career, that stop the younger generation. I believe we need to give the younger generation a chance. During the few years just after NS, one interviewer-Manager told me: You are so young. How can I appoint you to supervise some men who are twice your age? My reply: You are only a couple of years older than me. If no one gave you a chance. You can not be a Manager. He gave me the job and I never fail to deliver. Our GM (his direct superior also agreed later that he gave me a chance).

[thumbsup] i have around 30 headcount under my care and more than 50% older than me... i have no problem getting respect from them and getting support... it's never the age but the maturity of personality, EQ and substance,,, [grin]

Now it may become the 'trend' to hire me after the FT mismanaged/abandoned the job.

only mismanaged bosses would replace the "lead" guy with cheaper FT. i will always have SG/MY only as my key head to lead a group of FT, never believe in having FT to lead a team of local due to their differences in culture and flow of thought processes, it never works, only SG/MY are close enough in culture, no other nation come close.... [grin]

Engineering is dead in SG. Replaced by cheap FT.

Go to finance, you'll make more money there.

I know, I was once an engineer.

OCT 14.

- More engineers will be needed to come up with elderly-friendly infrastructure as Singapore faces an ageing population, said Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

"There has been an increase in life expectancy... this has lead to an unprecedented rate of ageing," he added, noting that engineers who can cater to t

the demands of changing demographics will have more opportunities.

The environment and water resources minister was speaking at the 48th annual dinner for the Institution of Engineers (IES) - held on Friday night at the convention centre of Resorts World Sentosa - where he was the guest of honour.

In his opening speech, Chong Kee Sen, IES president, said it is

"critical to resolve the issue of compensation to attract and retain talents in this industry".

It is important to do so because engineers are needed to address many challenges, such as climate change, depleting natural resources and land scarcity, he added.

??? why they say with ageing popn more engineers are needed in SG.

more health care workforce is more correct?

I'm not sure whether it's me being outdated or not but I find there are still a lot of engineering courses in the local Uni so not sure if I can agree that the authorities are discouraging engineering??

In fact many of my daughter's friends end up in engineering courses when other faculties reject them and they can't afford to go overseas. It's quite sad actually cos some of them just not interested in engineering but hv no choice but accept and I've seen many engineering grads end up in anywhere but engineering jobs.

I think many people don't want engineering job cuz the pay is low and work long hours. I have 2 friends who just graduated from SIT and their starting pay only 3.5k and I heard they got alot of work to do. Good thing is that SIT only 2 years whereas NUS or NTU is 3 or 4 years.

3.5k not good enough?

I was pay 2.2k when I started worked. People are very demanding these days.....

Nowadays no one wants to go the engineering route because it is so tough to get an engineering degree. Go get a general degree with some financial majors and become a banker or investment advisor or the like.

Earn more, wear nice nice and degree easier to get.

This is the trend from my observation. I stand corrected.

Cold hard truth is that Engineering is severely under-appreciated profession in Singapore.

In US, you can get much better remuneration for engineers / scientists and quite on-par or even better than accountants.

In Singapore, only in the first 2 years engineers can have higher salary than accountants, and after 2 years accountants will easily have doubled engineers salary. That's a sad fact of life here.

I have master engineering degree from US and struggled with this fact for 4 years in Singapore, but then decided to get the best out of the situation and used my engineering knowledge to move to sales.

Doing a lot better now.

Engineering will give you a good start, but not a good way to finish your career.

Good news is you can do much better using your knowledge for other professions like sales, black belt six sigma, analysts, consultants, etc.

It's all whether you have the determination to better equip yourself and take the effort to the next level.....most people don't, unfortunately.

But given the chance to start over again, would i take engineering degree? No chance in hell......LOL

They were comparing with other friends who took business degree and started their first job with 4k-4,5k and still work shorter hours than them. But they forgot that not all business graduates start that high. Those few they comparing with are the exceptions.

Ho Ching gets a lot of Leeway in her life.

Yeap, everyone is learning.

You can start your career as an engineer, but you must quickly move sideways to move up.

Or you'll be a sad engineer at the end of your career.

No wonder, one engineer from my workplace switched to finance.

I was thinking, what a waste of his training.

Beginning of the switch for him was quite tough.

From car to take bus!

But now should be ok.

At first he also did some car insurance, but now maybe doing better things.

Engineering job with a good 1st class will probably not even hit 4.5k by 30, and you risk getting replaced by some FT.

Engineering job with a PhD probably just 5k by 30, and you risk getting replaced by cheaper FT.

Working in some serious paper work job wih a general 2nd upper, you probably get 5k or more by 30, and be so important to the company because your relationship and reputation built cannot be replaced by with some FT.

Now which job should you take?

And they become financial engineers when they switch to finance lol!

Jokes aside, heard a lot of those complicated structured products, options etc were coined by engineers who made the switch to Finance cos of their mathematical aptitude, analysis and training!
