Engineering career anyone?

on the bright side, if it is as rewarding as banking/finance, we will have a lot of half farked people trying to be in engineering.

You nailed it [thumbsup]

After many in our CSE course bitterly comprained why our failure rate i.e. sub-paper rate was so high, our dean said something like that:

If a electrical or mechanical engineer made a mistake, maybe one or two people get killed but if anyone of you committed one, tens or hundreds may die.

Cold comfort to many of us then but he actually made sense.

That said, it's still a b!tch to pass the course... <_<

I think certain profession are a calling, some people have it, some don't. Its not just about Money.

People who join the Milittary, risking their lives, in far away land & be away from their family. The calling to serve & protect. Thats why its not uncommon to have Military running generation say in USA.

Doctors who have calling to saves live, Entertainers, the calling to create joy for people. Before the invention of photography, Artists have on their shoulder to capture pieces of history in time, lifestyle of people of his time, Landmark in their prime at his time. So some see this as their callings.

Car designers that see the calling to see their creation, in the metal, on magazine, & the roads,

Its the same with Engineers and Scientist. An engineer that work on Wind turbine, see the calling to make a green world for our children, Engineers who built bridges see the calling to make comutting better for people, & left a footprint in History, the warm in the heart to know long after you are gone, your grandson point to his, 'Your great-grandpa built this'

If some of these job, pay well, then its a bonus.

But like I said in my first sentence, not everyone have such calling. Some will say, 'who cares, I can sit on a desk all day, who cares what I do, If I can happily collect 5 figure sum a month. Joy is when I have time & money for Holidays in exotic locations, driving big cars, & I can buy whatever my little prince & princess wanted. Joy is when I am the envy of my relatives'.

Singapore is in the end, still a typcial Asian Society, where success is judge mainly by how much money you made, doesn't help that cost of living is very high. So passion, & whatever they wanted to be, get shafted for a job that pays better is normal.

In the end, you have to ask what you wanted, how you are going to achieve it, what you are going to forgo, & if your family is supportive.

the problem i think is that engineering jobs are relatively lowly paid in Singapore, relative to the requirements...

in school you already study like shit, while your friends party like no tomorrow... they are more like part-time student doing 50% of what engineering courses are doing...

going into the industry takes a long time to earn your stripes, before you see some light at the tunnel, while others in banking and finance are making big bucks since day one... jumping from one ship to another...

unless one is really interested, they wouldn't stay long in engineering... who wants?

OCT 14.

- More engineers will be needed to come up with elderly-friendly infrastructure as Singapore faces an ageing population, said Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.

"There has been an increase in life expectancy... this has lead to an unprecedented rate of ageing," he added, noting that engineers who can cater to t

the demands of changing demographics will have more opportunities.

The environment and water resources minister was speaking at the 48th annual dinner for the Institution of Engineers (IES) - held on Friday night at the convention centre of Resorts World Sentosa - where he was the guest of honour.

In his opening speech, Chong Kee Sen, IES president, said it is

"critical to resolve the issue of compensation to attract and retain talents in this industry".

It is important to do so because engineers are needed to address many challenges, such as climate change, depleting natural resources and land scarcity, he added.

FMC ... Cooper Cameron ... Drill Quip ... Etc

Drilling a hole to a layman is creating a hole with a drill bit ... But in reality, it's so much more ...

Gun Drilling ... Deep Hole Drilling (20 x Dia) ... Special Drilling Applications ...

This is just Oil & Gas ... Not to mention other trades ...

Imagine this ... You need to drill a hole with Diameter 0.5mm ... How would you do it? ... Only an experienced Engineer can tell you ... 😄

I would never have made it in engineering given my poor math and science. But I do kinda regret not having those hard skills which really piece things together in a project. I'm only good at strategies.

Reminds me of a story... and I'm afraid Singapore is going down the same path:

When asked by Tony Blair for the secret of her country’s resilience, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said: “We still make things.”

Engineering is a dying trade, with more manufacturing base shifting, it's going to be worse

Singapore don't need engineers.

SMRT proven that cable tie is the only piece of "engineering" equipment needed.

No wonder now all the boys don't feel paisay taking up business, accountancy, legal or "soft" option courses unlike our time when almost all boys will go for engineering. Then, if you are the odd one out, sure kena suan/teased.

Almost all my cohorts are now out of engineering jobs, replaced by FTs. [thumbsdown]

Fully agreed. However, unless one is blessed with huge fortune inheritance and purely work for fun (not fund), .......

Otherwise, it's a constant struggle to stay afloat and trying to make a living to meet family commitments from your engineering job at the age of 40s.

engineers create things that improve life.

bankers create things that suck money.
