Grab/Ryde issues and charges

when i took uber in taoyuan/taipei, the lady uber driver told me they will not cancel even if the call from 20km away and they dun even know where the destination was, it could be just 3km away or 50km opposite direction from their home/base, they will still take the booking.

The reason she gave was since the location is far mean the caller had problem booking/calling a taxi, it could be urgent matter so she will always take the call.

It is a well-known fact that service culture in Singapore sucks. Met enough of these drivers whenever I book a ride... PHV drivers in Singapore are coming to the point they want short but highly paid trips. Continue to be whiners...

Ya.. That make things worst when grab reduce incentives and now in Facebook group people start sharing the income for cherry pick. And slowly more people sees WA cherry pick income can be so much better.. And then more people will start to cherry pick too.. End up what happened? More riders will have difficulty to get a ride and more riders will get fed up and not use grab anymore.. and then the whole system will not work already..

Actually not only grab this applies to all other companies like Ryde, go-jek and etc.. I think lta still come out with the ruling to ensure all these companies to hide drop off location and how much is the cost before driver pick up rider. This will solve cherry pick issue.

Another thing.. When very little people cherry pick.. The load for not good ride is shared with all drivers. When the bad load is spread out.. It is actually a much more present experience to drive. Now it is because of cherry pick, the bad load is move towards drivers who do not cherry pick and end up those drivers who do not cherry pick also get fed up with 80% bad fares.. This is not healthy.. The load should spread out.. Everyone will share the bad fare and like this is more fair..

This one don't know leh.. Grab also need to make profit.. So really dont know what better solution..

You mean rider tipping driver?

Yes. Rider tipping or giving an incentive to the driver at the point of booking.

Why should anyone have to take bad fares at all?

If no one take who take? Someone must take correct? So the load need to spread out. This is so that it will not be loopsided.

Its for grab to solve isn't it? They can do things like let riders offer extra tips through the app to make drivers want to take their booking? Or else who would want to drive phv if they are made to take bad fares? Many will jump back to taxi again. I rmb when the uber app just came out, many taxi drivers and PHV drivers used it, but after that many of them jumped to grab cuz uber don't allow them to cherry pick.

Actually the solution is very easy. By all means jump back to taxi - Go!

I really don't understand all the whining here. If you think you have a better solution, just do it. Why wait? Why complain? Just go? You can make more money there, what's holding you back?

There are 2 sides to this.

In Sg, if you get a booking say 10km away, you'd wonder if you travelled 9km, would the rider decide to cancel on you?

I had on a couple of occasions when I reached the place, the rider cancelled. And you know how frustrating that can be.

If you end up in a popular place for pickups, not a real issue, you get another.

If you end up in a ulu place, then you'll curse and swear.

The driver mentioned the same problem they face there, and worse thing is the cancel fee only $2-$3 over there unlike $6 here  [sweatdrop]

Yeah, Uber cancellation charge was good here.

Now Grab driver don't receive any cancellation charge. They just congrat you that your Cancellation Rating is not affected if you wait more than 5 min.

Ya lo. Thats whats happening now. My dad almost started driving phv but decided to stay with his taxi after seeing most of his friends coming back to driving taxi. Even his relief driver asked to drive relief for him again once he returns his car.

Actually, what is considered fair when you keep pointing the fingers against the drivers instead of the ride hailing company for cutting back the incentives that inevitably impacted the motivation to make a decent living? As the saying goes "上有正策, 下有对策"!

At the end of the day, the ride hailing companies will be left with drivers who registered their own companies and purchase a vehicle to drive for the ride hailing company. The reason being that the rental, petrol and car wash cannot be claim under individual when it comes to declaring income tax whereas those can be considered deductible expenses when it comes to filing the tax return for the company, the individual will just draw a monthly salary from his/her own registered company.

Renting to drive for ride hailing companies is no longer consider good as compare to driving for taxi companies as taxi rental can be considered as expenses to deduct from the taxable income.

Taxi business had been picking up in steady stream.. This is especially so for ComfortDelGo taxi. For past few wks, I been noticing taxi especially ComfortDelGo keep have on call and busy sign and they constantly enter into basement condo or condo guardhouse pickup point and wait for pax. This is much rarer sight before grab merger with uber.

Why are people going back to taxi now ?

Possibly the price. Since Grab pull back the promos, it seems taxi fare can be cheaper.

Fare maybe part of the reason, another big factor is because of difficulty to get a ride with grab.

Just today morning 6plus am, I picked up this rider pickup location from lor liew Lian to Bedok north fare was $11 bucks. She said she was trying her luck to try book grab as most of the time she tried to book grab to Bedok at this timing always no car. So she was also surprised the ride got accepted so fast. She also said if still can't get take taxi lor.. Usually the price is around 17bucks.

Till now there are still many riders find it difficult to get a confirmed ride with grab.. Of coz many will slowly get fed up and take taxi instead. Maybe some had already switched to Ryde and other ride hiring company also already.

Income tax alone is already a discriminatory reason to switch back to taxi. Secondly, in absence of ride hailing bookings, taxi still can take street pickups which PHV can't. Their income is solely relied on Grab or other ride-hailing apps. Car rental wise, PHV rates are still better than taxis.

For passengers, the reduction in promo means I am likely to use Grab less and there is the ripple effect where I get less points (due to frequency of use) and with less points, all the lesser I use Grab. Of course, passengers are not stupid and we all know drivers are cherry-picking (the very same thing we complained about taxi years back). Taxi is advantageous in this case because we can hold taxi drivers accountable if they reject flag-downs without a good reason but cherry-picking for PHV drivers - there's nothing passengers can do about it.

If anything more, some of these cherry-picking PHV drivers are in fact the very bad eggs banned or terminated from taxi companies for various reasons.

Income tax avoidance

Cherry picking

Reduced incentives

Lost of income from riders now sick of the result of driver  cherry picking and incentives

Seem like PHV drivers should all go back to Taxis.

Also sound like the current best solution is for the taxi companies to buck up and just create an app that make it easier to book taxi  and reduce the booking fee.

If one wants to be contrarian, maybe make road side flag down incur a fee instead of booking a ride. That will surely gravitate the rider population towards the.booking app.

Don't agree that someone should take if they don't want to.

But no one is stopping you from taking. It's just lame to expect others should be like you.
