Tianake 2nd Gear June 18, 2014 Share June 18, 2014 this building seems to have no end of troubles... MP Lee Bee Wah says this is because not enough foreign workers, therefore the work was even more rushed, therefore quality low. i probably agree manpower is an issue, but one should not 趁火打劫 it seems that an "overhaul" is in order to get rid of all the defects. might as well say the QC guys never do their work properly

Baal Supersonic June 18, 2014 Share June 18, 2014 (edited) http://www.tremeritus.com/2014/06/18/yet-another-incident-at-jem-mall/ Yet another incident at Jem Mall June 18th, 2014 | Author: Editorial Spinkler problem at Jem Mall Yesterday (17 Jun), sprinklers on level 3 of Jem Mall at Jurong East were unexpectedly triggered in the afternoon. Water was raining down from the ceiling, damaging goods and forcing some tenants to close shop for the day to clean up. Customers had to be evacuated. Parts of the first floor was covered by about 3cm of water. Jem cordoned off a section of the ground floor until about 4pm to clear away the water, while some escalators remained switched off into the evening. A statement from mall management Lend Lease said, “The atrium side water sprinklers on level 3 in the mall were triggered, affecting a small section of the mall’s common areas on Levels B1, 1 and 2 and some tenancies in those areas”. No details were given as to what triggered the sprinklers. A Soo Kee Jewellery sales representative said the shop may have to stay shut for up to five weeks after its lights and carpets were “badly damaged”. Tweets posted as early as 12:17pm showed photos and videos of water pouring from the ceiling, covering some floors with water. This is not the first time the mall has made headlines for its problems since it opened almost a year ago. Its opening was delayed for a few days last year when it could not secure a fire permit in time. In August last year, two fires broke out. And in September, the mall was closed for almost two weeks after a burst water pipe brought down a portion of the false ceiling, injuring 3 people. MP Lee Bee Wah At the time when the water pipe burst in Jem Mall, MP Lee Bee Wah took the opportunity to tell the media that the recent policy tightening on foreign workers may have been a factor in the incident. She said, “Every time a contractor renews work permit for their workers, they face some difficulties and therefore keep changing staff. That could mean we don’t have experienced engineers or inspectors. The government should really look into this.” Ms Lee, who was a Malaysian before she became a Singaporean MP, runs her own consultancy and engineering companies [Link]. Her consultancy firm, LBW Consultants, provides “civil, structural, project management and golf course design services” while her other company, LBW Engineering, provides turnkey solutions and product distribution for satellite communications. In fact, her companies have a lot of experience participating in many residential, commercial, industrial and institutional projects in Singapore [Link]. They even include military ones: Proposed Airport Emergency Services (AES) Training / Live-Fire Fighting Facilities at Paya Lebar Airbase Proposed Upgrading of Khatib Camp Proposed Upgrading of Kranji Camp Proposed Upgrading & Renovation of Hangars in Sembawang Air Base Proposed Upgrading of School of Ammunition in Rifle Range Road Camp II Proposed Upgrading of Airfield Ground Service Section in Sembawang Air Base So, will Ms Lee be taking the opportunity to tell the media this time that the sprinkler problem at Jem Mall is also due to the recent policy of tightening of foreign workers? http://www.tremeritus.com/2014/06/18/yet-another-incident-at-jem-mall/ Edited June 18, 2014 by Baal
Baal Supersonic June 18, 2014 Share June 18, 2014 My first guess is somebody SMOKING near the sprinklers? iinw, sprinklers are activated by heat not smoke per se. The reddish fluid within the glass expands and cracks/breaks thereby triggering the system. If true, under normal circumstances, it should be a fire outbreak generating lots of heat that triggers. Unless a smoker deliberately takes the lighted butt, reaches up & touch the glass or uses a lighter to heat it up.
Wt_know Hypersonic June 18, 2014 Share June 18, 2014 (edited) at least we did not say "perfection is impossible" ? sometime fire .... sometime water ... sometime ceiling collapse ... it's acceptable as long as the building still stands Edited June 18, 2014 by Wt_know

LOL Not sure abt building sprinkler system. But for vsl, we test it yearly with compressed air. Each sprinkler, we cover with balloon. Balloon inflate, means no choke.
