Re this case, we all love cheap china products. Things you get from taoboa, aliexpress and dx.

But do be careful, that cheap usually means lots of cost cutting.

Especially any electrical, electronic items, that's where the danger lies.

If it's plastic toys, non-consequential item if failed, it may not be as critical.

I ever bought $1 cheap radio cords from Sim Lim Tower, For some reason, it found its way into a sensitive commercial area and trip a whole rack of equipment.

Not that I wanted to buy that cheap cord, but there was no better one. Everyone is selling the cheapies, bcuz they think the better quality ones can't sell.

So how do they cut cost on electrical items ?

By using really thin copper wires, which is weak physically, and carries high resistance. Similar to those $20 jump start cables you get at petrol station.

The result is that it's prone to heating up the insulation, starting a fire or getting someone electrocuted.

Bad QC.

Afterall aftermarket products mostly are okay, but then there are some which have bad QC and we would never know.

So ya, count yourself blessing.

Even original products if bad QC will also suffer the same fate, just that the chances of it happening is a lot lower as those original item went through stringent check and QC, although there maybe just a tiny % that is still not check properly ( possible ) and whoever have that item, well.. count themselves bad luck..

Nowadays everything want slim and compact, the step down of voltage from 220v to 5v (USB rating) is via capacitors instead of solid transformers in the past.

In the mid 90s, there were already reports of faulty capicators being manufacturered, causing many electronics stuffs and PC motherboards to fail prematurely.

Even if the circuit is designed correctly, premature wearing of the capicators are enough to cause circuit failure.

In the case of the news article, most likely it is not grounded properly. The laptop/PC should have it's own grounding to prevent all these.

I encountered in our test lab an explosion caused by a test equipment. After investigations, the power cable similiar to ur PC cable was the culrpit. Within this cable is 3 other cables (E, N and L). Somehow the insulation between N and L degraded and caused contact between the 2 wires. The test equipment did not blow up, but there is a big bang with while sparks flying around on the cable and it was all charred. In summary, you can buy top of the range and branded devices, all it takes is something down the supply chain to be defective to cause all these problems.

SS original phone charger wire also very thin. Is it ok?

USB standard is 5V, 500mA, which is very small wattage and should be ok. Besides it is not used 24 x 7. If you leave it connected to the plug all the time without switching off, it is the plug that is bearing the full blunt of stepping down the voltage. Some bigger smartphones and tablets draw higher milli-amp from 750 to 1000.

Even battery pack can catch fire lao, what is those faulty usb cable that is plugged to power plug, pc or laptop man...
