Jman888 Moderator January 17, 2017 Share January 17, 2017 Man from Singapore fatally shot at US gun range PUBLISHED: 9:48 AM, JANUARY 17, 2017 UPDATED: 9:55 AM, JANUARY 17, 2017 The Raahauge shooting range. Photo: Facebook SINGAPORE — A man from Singapore was fatally shot at a gun range in California on Saturday (Jan 14), according to US media reports. The shooting occurred at 11.35am at Raahauge Shooting Enterprises in Corona, California, according to a coroner’s report on the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s website. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the fatality, has deemed the shooting accidental, but investigations are still ongoing. The man, was identified on Sunday as Lionel Tan, 36, a resident of Hawaiian Gardens. Tan was taken to a local hospital just before noon and pronounced dead at 12.09pm. The gun range was closed on Saturday afternoon while the Sheriff’s Department conducted its investigation but reopened on Sunday. On Facebook, Mr Gabriel Estrada, a friend of Tan, put up a post saying: “Our sudden loss yesterday of our friend is truly starting to sink in. Freak accidents happen, proving how short life can be.” Mr Estrada set up a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe.com to raise money to pay for the funeral expenses, saying: “Lionel immigrated here from Singapore on his own several years ago and attended Purdue University. He studied Aerospace Engineering and most recently, he had been the Project Engineer on the Gold Line Connector in Downtown Los Angeles. “Lionel is survived by his family in Singapore and they are beginning to make the journey here to pick up their son, brother and take him home. As you all know, this will not be an easy process but all of us here will make sure our brother makes it back home to his final resting place.” As of writing, the amount raised reached US$17,170 (S$24,558) - the original goal was to raise US$10,000. When contacted, Mr Estrada told TODAY that he could not discuss any details as “there is still an investigation of the accident going on”. “Lionel will be greatly missed and he has many friends that are here to support the family,” he added. On the GoFundMe page, Mr Estrada described Tan as a “good man and friend”. “He (Lionel) was always the first to offer a helping hand or a kind word. He expressed positivity and compassion in everything he did with a dedication to healthy living and a strong work ethic. This world was a better place with Lionel in it; Our friend will truly be missed.” According to the GoFundMe page, Tan’s family will be arriving in the US on Tuesday (Jan 17). There will be a memorial for Tan in the US, before a family mass and service will be held back in Singapore. Tan was a student at Tampines Junior College before pursuing further studies in the US, according to his Facebook page. His LinkedIn profile showed that he had worked in the US for at least 10 years as an engineer. On the incident, Mrs Cindy Raahauge Shenberger, the range manager, told The Press Enterprise: “We don’t know exactly what happened”. She declined further comment on the incident, but said it was the first such incident in more than three decades at the outdoor range. According to the Raahauge gun range website, the facility offers several activities including shooting instruction, pheasant and duck hunting, dog training, a sporting clay range and more. The popular range was closed for several days in November last year after a fire burned several buildings and caused US$2 million worth of damage. An electrical malfunction caused the fire, according to a statement released by Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. ↡ Advertisement

Jman888 Moderator January 19, 2017 Share January 19, 2017 Woman injured after crows attack her Kimberly Lim THE NEW PAPER Thursday, Jan 19, 2017 She was in the shower when she heard a scream. Her daughter then told her she saw crows attacking a woman. The birds targeted the woman's head, and by the time the crows were done, she had to be rushed to Changi General Hospital (CGH). The Singapore Civil Defence Force told The New Paper it was alerted to the incident at Block 106, Pasir Ris Street 12, on Tuesday at 7.10pm. A woman in her late 40s was taken to CGH in an ambulance with lacerations on her forehead. Yesterday, the woman who heard the scream said: "My daughter told me she saw three or four children feeding crows. "The crows flew around and attacked a woman. There was a lot of blood on the woman's head. The blood had splattered on the ground and she was screaming." The woman was not the only one attacked that day. Civil servant Ian Ng, 41, and his parents were also attacked by crows in the vicinity while on their way to a night market. He said: "I saw a baby crow lying on the ground and four or five big crows perched on shelters and lamp posts. The crows swooped down when people walked into the area. A crow went for my head. I got a shock." Mr Ng was attacked once while his 77-year-old father was attacked twice. Fortunately, they did not suffer serious injuries. The younger Mr Ng said: "The crows attacked us with their beaks, but luckily it was not painful." He then called the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA). CULLING EXERCISE Residents told TNP they heard what they thought was the sound of shooting yesterday morning and believed it could have been the authorities conducting a culling exercise. AVA told TNP it received two calls on crow attacks on Tuesday, and activated its contractor to conduct crow management works. One crow's nest was removed. AVA said: "We will continue to monitor the situation, and conduct surveillance and operations within the area. "The public can do their part by not feeding the birds and ensuring proper food waste disposal. Easily available food sources will encourage the birds to congregate and result in an increase in their numbers, which could result in related nuisance and hygiene issues." When TNP visited the area yesterday morning, bloodstains were found at the void deck of Block 105. No crows were spotted. Mr Chong Joo Chong, 63, a Block 103 resident, said he was attacked by a crow yesterday afternoon. He told TNP: "A huge crow went for my head thrice. It was aggressive. I saw another man being attacked by two big crows and a small one. "It felt like someone was pushing my head with a lot of force." AVA received about 500 calls on crow attacks in 2015 and about 320 last year. It said the public can call 1800-4761-600 to report crow attacks or crow-related issues. Jman888 Moderator January 24, 2017 Share January 24, 2017 looks like a nice place to de-stress Nudity case: "It's not the first time..." says resident, claims almost 1,600 participated Bernama New Straits Times January 24, 2017 BENTONG: It is not the first time visitors to a resort in Bentong have stripped naked and acted indecently, as similar incidents have occurred before. Chairman of the residents’ committee there, Rozzana Chung Abdullah, 59, claimed she had seen hundreds of participants bathing in the open, including some who stripped bare during sports event organised there. “Nearly 1,600 people participated in the event. They set up tents and temporary toilets. My bedroom faces the playing field, so I could clearly see them wearing only underwear, and some naked while showering in the open,” she said when met at her house here, today. Rozzana claimed that another company had previously organised a motivational camp at the same location, and in one of the activities, the male participants took advantage by hugging their female counterparts. On last Saturday’s incident where a company was alleged to have organised a motivational programme including nude activities at the resort, she said the residents were not informed of the event as it was handled by the management of the resort. She said sports and motivational camps were often held there, and residents were used to them. “I only found out about the camp being held there when I heard some loud music at around 3 or 4 pm, but I didn’t pay attention to it. “However, at 6 pm, when taking out the trash, I saw some of my neighbors laughing, and when I asked them what was the matter, they said there were naked men on the field. “I immediately went up to my house and took pictures using my mobile phone before lodging a police report,” she said. She added that as chairman of the residents’ committee, she received many complaints from other residents of the resort through WhatsApp or calls regarding the incident. “This is not only a resort, but also a residential area. Some of us have small children,” said Rozzana. According to her, there were 776 housing units there, but only about 100 families were permanent residents, while others usually came over the weekend A maintenance worker there, Mohd Azmi Ismail, 32, concurred with Rozzana over the matter. “The organisers of the events here do not respect the privacy of the residents, there are some who play the music so loud, drink until they are drunk without considering the sensitivity of the Muslim population here, besides littering the place,” he added. Meanwhile, during a survey by Bernama in the area, a man in his 50s, believed to be the resort manager approached journalists and prevented them from taking pictures. He also threatened to take legal action if the images were published, as he claimed the place was private property. – BERNAMA ↡ Advertisement
