Stop-Start Systems

I dont think it is a ploy for more maintenace $. This feature is great for big country and light traffic roads. It is frankly useless for Singapore.

I am just waitinf to see elect cars perform here. I personally dont think it can last more than 3 years.

New Lexus start stop system is a separate system from the car starter. It is quote by Lexus it can do more than 368k time before u need to change system which mean it can goes slightly more than 10 years if you start stop 100 times per day!!!

What about battery, ignition and engine?

Go to YouTube add this part to the video address, dunno why cannot post YouTube clip from ipad. EeIY0uQ46Vg

Watch from 15min 15sec they talk abt the start stop.

Battery I can't answer, but ignition and engine are separate components from start stop

The YouTube clip is a popular Taiwan car channel, so he is speaking in mandarin, not sure u Chinese or not here multi culture society

Been doing a bit of reading up, and even though using start-stop tech saves fuel, it has significant deleterious effects on the starter motor and the battery.

The net cost of replacement of these items may outweigh the savings:

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/06/the-shocking-truth-about-start-stop-systems/

One other issue:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=766765

Here is a serious issue that I haven't seen discussed (perhaps because I missed it). When you pull into your driveway or any other parking spot, the auto stop start will stop the engine. If you make the mistake (as I have) of pressing the engine start/stop button to shut down the ignition, you will merely restart the engine (very irritating). How do you turn the ignition off? If you take your foot off the brake and then press engine stop/start - something turns off, but the cars electrics are still on. If you now get out of the car and leave, as I did yesterday, in a few hours yourbattery will be dead! (as mine was yesterday)

The only solution I have found is to make sure you lock the doors when leaving, this will turn off the electrical system completely.

I asked the PA workshop to disable mine permanently but they say cannot due to LTA regulation. They do the memory coding trick for me. So it always remember the last setting, that is turn the damn thing off. [laugh]

But the internal circulation, cannot. After some time, it will allow fresh air in. Stuck in the causeway, some exhaust fumes enter the cabin. [:|]

Oh it's not just a merc thing? Audi also. Wah.

U start stop an engine, logically speaking, its like u on and off.

Worst case, the moment engine on, the accelerator indicates to the engine to move on without resting or wait for few seconds to build up.

Let me take an example, u turn on and off any appliance in ur house every 5 mins, will it get spoil faster?

Of course car company doesnt care about this. The more u use, the more repair u need, the more they will earn right

Oh it's not just a merc thing? Audi also. Wah.

Go get lexus lor haha

In the YouTube, the Taiwanese channel claim Lexus told them the start stop ignition is a separate system from the car normal ignition starter that start the car. In short Lexus use 2 systems, one is to start the engine, and the other one is the function start stop

I am no engineer with new technology who know ? Just like nowadays our computer also so much more advance then the PC we have in the early nineties

This is the YouTube channel, start stop talk around 15min 15sec

I dunno is this the 27 years old young chap that crash Honda NSX during testing due to bee sting lol

Many cars offer this system now, an option on some model.

I suspect in future, possibly majority of cars will be equipped.

Yes, its not a nice feeling to feel the car vibrating a bit toggling between start and stop and start.

But hopefully, system will get better and better with further finetuning.

Perhaps, similar like  automatic transmission, now manual will be obsolete....

and a recent one is CVT transmission - previously lots of concerns/complaint but now commonplace.

I'm not talking about start stop system. Im referring to allowing the external circulation to enter after a certain time.

I think the main issue of the auto start/stop system is that it's not "intelligent". But I think the engineers will install "eyes" in the system to spot traffic lights in future. Only when the system "see" the traffic lights the auto start/stop will function and not when say the car is crawling in a traffic jam.

The tech now is that there are "eyes" in cars to spot pedestrian so I think it can also spot traffic lights with not much of a problem. It's just a matter of when. Anyway if electric cars do takeover some day this auto start/stop is pretty much pointless.

Some ppl do want to make use of the auto start/stop so it's good to have a battery recovery pack handy. Now such device are quite compact. Just buy one that is suitable to charge AGM batteries. Or if you are staying at landed property invest in a battery charger using the wall power socket to charge the batt at the end of the day.

If start/stop is good, why have feature to disable it from kicking in? Simple reason, starting draws high current and it drains your battery flat. Try doing that to your car and not covering enough distance to recharge your battery.

Separate battery for this purpose is like having a bigger aampers hour battery.

seriously, this is still being discussed?

4.5 yrs into my ride and the SS system is no biggie!  If you hit a traffic jam, then turn it off for goodness sake

To date, no battery change, No starter replacement, fc for my 5series is 12.7km/l....so what is all the fuss about?

Technology is here to stay ad embrace it.  SS systems are more robust than you think, so go do your homework first and see the synergy that the system has to offer

Boss. Its not the SS system I worry. Its the other things like engine mounts. Many A6 owners having their engine mounts changed due to frequent Start-stop. And that stupid engine mount for A6 is bloody expensive inside got oil damper one. After disabling the SS system, no complaints from them with regards to engine mount failure. With SS system on, A6 owners are changing engine mount at 1.5 to 2yrs.

So the moment I got mine, at first opportunity, I asked them to help me turn it off. [laugh]

Haha..i see, sorry.

Yes correct. I hate this feature too as i prefer to choose it on my own.

However, i guess its "medically sound" - to prevent build up of carbon dioxide within the car for long drive....

Not sure abt COPD patients though...hypoxic drive? confusing hehe.

you may be right, the start stop system may contribute to premature failure of the engine mount.

The vibration can be felt inside the car.

However, perhaps japanese cars engine mount more reliable and last longer than Audi....maybe!

for start stop systems, battery is not the main issue cos many batteries have high CCA (costlier also) to cope with the frequent start stops.

to me the vibration is a main issue.

anyways, those who find it useful just use lor, those who don't find it useful, disable lor.

I am in the disable camp.

I once came across a magazine ad on how Audi brag about having patent a hundred over of their car parts.

I told myself to stay away from such cars. [laugh]
